Description

12k-em cttmtml' tant' @than @time muy JOI-IN BRYANT, F AKRON, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO vHIMSELF AND ALLEN L.'BAILEY, vOld" THE SAME PLACE.
Leners Pme No. 88,606, dated April 6, 1869.
IMPROVED LINE-HOLDER.
The'schedule referred to in vthese Letters Patent and making part of the saine.
To all whom. it may conce/m Be it known that I, J HN BRYANT, of Akron, in the county of Fulton, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plumb, Level, and Guide-Line Holder; and I do hereby declare t-liat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the ait to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an instrument or apparatus for plumbing-and levelling for various purposes; and
and D, which stand perpendicular thereto.
Each bar has a plumb-line attached to it near its top end, which lines are marked E.
They are connected so that when they hang parallel,
with the bars, the bars areplumb, and the sight f, on
.the jaw A, is brought in range with the two sights g g on the jaw B.
The line H, by which the two jaws are connected, is level, as would also be the upper sides of the jaws. In applying the jaws for levelling a foundation, a frame, mason-work, or surface in any situation, the
shoulders .I of the jaws are placed on the angle of any 'fixed object, as seen in the drawing when they are drawn towards each other by turning the cylinder or drum 7.', around which the Vcord H is wound.
On the drum-shaft there is a ratchet-wheel, L, and on the jaw A there is a pan/1,021, which engages with the teeth of the ratchet, and thereby holds the cord tant and the jaws in position after they have been made level by plumbing the bars C D, and sighting from f to g g, as before mentioned.
It will be seen that in laying up brick walls, or walls.
of stone, the work may at all times be kept level, and the corners plumb, by the use of this apparatus.
v I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentllhe jaws A B, bars C D, cord H, plumb-lines E E, drum K, and ratchet and pawl L M, combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
JOHN BRYANT.
