ROOFING-TILE Specification of LettersPatent.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CARLos N. BRUZAUD, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Peekskill, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Roofing-Tiles, of which-the fo owing is a specification.
This invention relates to roofing tiles and has for its objects to provide a comparatively simple, inexpensive device of this character which permits of a number of tiles being readily assembled and securely interlocked in the formation of the roof, one wherein the tiles may be conveniently and securely fastened in position and one whereby rain and other moisture will be properly drained from the roof. I
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a pers ective view showing a plurality of tiles em odying the invention and assembled in the formation of a roof. Fig. 2is a longitudinal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 I Fig. 4 is a reverse plan view of one of the tiles.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that each of the tiles 1, which are identical in form, is provided on its upper or obverse face with a pair of main longitudinal grooves or channels 2 divided by a central upstanding web 3 and communicating at their upper ends with a hollow or depression 4, there ing formed at the upper end of the tile a air of transverse grooves or channels 5 w ich communicates one with the other through the medium of a groove or depression 6 and with the depression 4 by means of the groove 7 formed at one end of the channels 5, the tile being rovided at its lower end with a depending ange 8 provided adjacent itsends and on the lower face of the tile with thickened portions or lugs 9. The tile is provided along one edge with a longitudinal side portion or flange 10 between the inner edge of which and the adjacent channel 2 there is formed a wall 11, vertically notched or recessed adjacent its upper end, as at 12, to provide stop shoulders 13 dis osed in line with corresponding stop should ers14 formed at the other side of the tile by a depression 15, there being formed in the upper face of flange 10 a plurality of longitudinal grooves 16 for a purpose which will presently appear, While at its other side opposite the flange 10 the tile has formed in its upper face a longitudinal groove or depression 17 separated from the adjacent longitudinal channel 2 by means of a web 18provided with a series of transverse notches 19 through the medium of which the channel 17 communicates with the channel 2.
The tile has on its lower or reverse face, and adjacent its upfper end, a pair of depending spaced lugs or eet 20 which bear on the underlying roof sheathing to hold the tile in spaced relation thereto, while adjacent the lower end of the tile there is formed a depending transverse web 21 spaced from and extended parallelwith the flange 8, which is recessed at its longitudinal center, as at 22 to permit free passage of water from the depression 4 into the channels 2 when the tiles are assembled, while formed on the lower face of the tile at a oint adjacent its lower end, is a depending ongitudinally-extended lug 23 having a transverse perforation 24 for the reception of a tie-wire 25 to be employed in securing the tiles in place. Formed at that side of the tile opposite the flange 10 and disposed in the plane of the upper face of the tile, is a longitudinal flange 26 having at its outer edge, a rib 27, and on its lower face near its upper end, a surface enlargement 28 adapted to fit within a slight depression 29 formed at the upper end of the flange 10, which, it will be observed is dis osed 1n the plane of the lower face of the tile.
In practice, in assembling the tiles, the side flange 26 on one tile is seated in overlapping position upon the side flange 10 of the next adjacent tile, with the bead 27 disposed in a groove 30 formed in'the upper face of flange 10 and with the surface enlar ement 28 seated in the depression 29, un er which conditions the longitudinal edge of flange 26 will contact with the wall 11 at the inner edge of flange 10. 'One complete course of tiles are first laid, which are connected by means of the wire 26, threaded through the perforated lugs 23, after which the terminals of the wire are secured in some suitable manner to the underlyin ,roof frame. One course having been lai in laying the next course the lower end of one tile is joined to the upper end of the next adjacent tile by seating the flange 8 in the depressions 4, 12
and 15, which, it will be observed are disl posed in alinement transversely of the tile, it being understood that the enlarged ortions of lugs 9 will be arranged res ective y in the depressions 12 and 15 and wi 1, through contactwith the shoulders 13, 14, prevent relative longitudinal movement of the tiles. It is to be observed that rain or other moisture accumulating on the tiles will flow through the channels 5 to the space or depression 4 and thence through the passage 22 to the longitudinal grooves 2, while the grooves 16 provide for the drainage of moisture from the anges 10.
By locating the holes 24 for the tie wire 25 above the lowermost surface of the tile, the
tie wire, as it is drawn through such holes, is bent and crim ed as shown in Fig. 3 so that the tiles are he d together as they are strung along the wire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is
A roofing tile provided with side flanges to establish an overlap with adjoining tiles of like formation and also provided with drain channels in its upper surface and a longitudinal groove in its lower surface, and a projection within said groove in the bottom of the tile having a hole for the reception of a tie wire connecting with adjoining tiles, which hole is located above the plane of the lowermost surface of the tile, for the purpose specified.
