PRESLEY B. JOHNSON, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
LEDGER-FILE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 1908.
Application filed October 18, 1907. Serial No. 398,125.
l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PnEsLnY B. JonNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in 'the countr of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ledger E iles, ol' which the iollosving is a specification.
This invention relatos to ledger card sys-v tems, and one of the principal objects ot the same is to provide a series ot cards having lettered tabs arranged in a manner to instanti)v give'access to any account required.
Another object of the invention is to provide a box or holder for index cards and for an arrangement of cards Within the' box by means ot' Which access is readily had to the paid or unpaid bills= under anv naine Whalever.
These and other objects ma)Y be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a transverse asectionedr` vien' through the iile box and showing one ot'the cards in place therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ot' the box lor containing the cards. Fig. 3 is a perspective vien ol the corner portions otl tivo cards arranged in accorda-nce with in v invention. Fig. 4 is a similar vien of another card which 1 use in my system. Fg.. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the arrangement oi two of the date cards. Fig. 6 is a view similar to F 4 showing one ol the. settlement cards.
Referring to the drawings lor a more speciiio description of my invention the numeral 1 designates the box i'or containingthe cards. The sides of the box are provided with openings 2 and above the openings the sides are slotted from near their rear ends forwardly as at 3. The sliding member 1 is provided with outwardly projecting lugs 5 fitted to slide in the slots 3 and keeper plates 6 secured to said slide and bearing upon the upper edges ol the sides of the box. A groove 7 in the bottom of the box accommodates the lug S on the lower side oli the slide. A vertical siot 9 permits the removalof the slide when pushed back against the rear side of the box. The front 10 of the box is secured to the bottom and spaces 11 are provided at opposite sides of said front. The Width of the front and of the slide 4 is substantially the saine. Longitudinal ribs 12 extend from the front 10 to the back of the box for a purpose which Will presently appear.
The index cards 13 are each provided with scmicirculor tabs 1li, each containing a letter ol' the alphabet and around the outer edge oii" the tab the entire alphabet is indicated thereon. Each index card is also provided with a dato tab 15,'said date tab having the word Date thereon and numerals arranged thereon l'roin 1 to 31".- 7the lovfer edge oi the cards are ear-h1 provided vri-ih a slot 1G designed ior the purpose oi moving one ol the cards towards the i it or left to engage ono of the ribs 12'nhenever rerpiired. 'llhere are supposed to' be used tn'o boxes', one for containing thecards from ."1 to l( and the other box for containing the cards from L to .7., the arrangement being substantially the same in each box. -irrz'i-nged in the box is a series ol cards', each rard having a tab similar to the tab iti but containing only the alplniintical letter and ay small tab or point containing one of the letters ol the alphabet. l'these cards are arranged with 'the letters in alinement with the iront card.
Referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the card 17 is provided with a tab 1S which is innnediatel)V behind the tab 19 on the card v13. On the tab 1.8 a point 2() having the letter Vf indicated thereon and this point is in alinement with the VW on the tab 19. The letters ro are indicated on the tab 18. The card 21 is provided with a tab 22 hai/'ing a point 23 with the letter rif thereon, said 1V also being in line with the E on tab 24 on card 13.
As shown in Fig. i there is a card 25 having a tab 26 thereon, on which is printed the Word Wfatclfl Referring to Fig. 5 in which two date cards 27 are shown, the tabs 2S are provided with points 29, upon which two dates are indiy cated, said dates being in alinement with the Vtainingthe letter B and each one of saidV cards containing a small point like 2O having one of the letters of the alphabet thereon.
-Also that there are a series oi cards each containing a date from 1 to 31 together with the settlement cards containing the words Paid and Unpaid and a card containing the Word /Vatch in each of the boxes.
Should the account of a customer named Brown be desired7 by looking back of the tab 19 a tab Will be jfound with a small point 2O having the letter Vf thereon Which is the fourth letter in the name Brown, While on the face of the tab Will appear the letters "ro. This Will instantly give access to the account of Brown. All other nanies will be similarly accessible. Bills payable upon a certain date will be arranged. between the date cards or next to the date upon which the bill is payable. if the bill has been paid before this date the settlement card 30 will be placed immediately behind the bill, and ii unpaid the card marked Unpaic Will be arranged immediatelyT behind the bill. ccounts of doubtful character are placed in front of the card Vv/fateli. This arrangement and use of the date cards will not interferel with the alphabetical a rangement of the index cards, owing to the location of the date tab. `lWhen a bill is Withdrawn from a certain place the card bach of the bill may be moved to the right or left so that the slot 16 Will engage the rib 12, thus indicating the place from which the bill has been with drawn.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that av ledger card system ina-de in ancordance with my invention will be found very convenient for all liinds of business and with a very little practico a person will be able to immediately locate an account and to ascer tain Whether an account has been paid upon the date it falls due. v
My invention may also be used an index filing system as Well as for a ledger card system; and loose leat ledger sheets may be utilized instead ot the ledger cards Where it is desired to use my invention as a loose lea ledger.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
l. in a ledger card system, a container for cards, and cards cut to lit in said container, said cards comprising index cards, each ol such index cards having a projecting tab seefiea portion of semi-circular outline having printed thereon a letter of the alphabet and also the entire alphabet arranged adjacent to the outer edge of the tab and a second tab portion having the Word Date and the numbers from l to 3l printed thereon7 a series of sets ol subject matter cards arranged one set for each index card7 each card of a set having a tab portion positioned to aline with the letter tab of the index card and provided with a projection from such tab to aline with one of the letters of the alphabet printed adjacent to the edge of the tab of such index card7 and a series of date cards having tabs and projections therefrom arranged to aline with the numerals of tne date tabs of the index cards.
2. in a ledger card system, a container for cardsI and cards cut to lit in said container, said cards comprising index cards, each ot such index cards having a projecting tab portion ot semicircular outline having printed thereon a letter of the alphabet and also the entire alphabet arranged adjacent the outer edge of the tab and a second tab portion having the word Date and the numbers from l. to 3l printed thereon, a series ot sets of subject matter cards arranged one set for each index card, each card of a set having a tab portion positioned to aline with the letter tab of the index card and provided with a projection from such tab to aline with one ot the letters oi the alphabet printed adjacent the edffe of the tab of such index card, a series of date cards having tabs and projections therefrom ar anged to aline With the numerals on the date tabs of the index cards, and cards to indicate paid bills and bills of doubtful character.
ln testimony whereof l aliix my signature in presence ot two Witnesses.
PRESLEY B. JOHNSON.
