To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BRIERLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and Sjtate of Ohio,have invented certain new and' useful Im rovements in Engraving-Machines and I do ereby-declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,- such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use .Myi invention relates to engravin machines, adapted" for engravings of all inds,
such as letters, designs and d1es, and has for its object the accurate and vsimple o eration and construction which by the emp oyment of a attern a facsimile of the design may be obtained in all of its lines and facets and be so obtained in increased or decreased size by the employment of astylus and a carving or cutting tool.
My invention. also consists in the employment andcombination in the engraving machine of eo-acting pantographs arranged in relation to-each other at an angle so as to coact and follow the lines and depressions of the pattern and impart the same design in increased or diminished size to a die or other article.
My invention also consists in the general design and operation of the machine and means for adjusting the parts thereof as will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

The standards A and A', of the machine, act as supports for 'the machine. At the upper end of the standard a slideway a receives the arm p of the horizontal pantograph, allowing free action of the same, but also keeps the arm p in horizontal position while it moves or is being moved during the operation of the machine.
At the rear end, slidingly mounted upon the standard A, is secured a slide F, mounted in a slideway F', thus being adjustable for` wardly and backwardly in relation to the forward art of the machinery. The slide F is proviclhd with a standard F2 (see Fi s. I and III) extending upward from said s ide,
provided in turn with a sliding block f, pivotally attached thereon. This slide F is provided with means, such as screws f2 for ti htening it in its predetermined position, aer it has-been adjusted; and the standard F2. may also be provided with slideways F3, to allow of the vertical adjustment of the sliding block It is by this means, namely, the slide F t e standard F2 and the pivoted sliding block f that' the vertical pantograph is sustained; the arm p of the pantograph engaging the slides in the sliding block, f. The arm, g2, of the horizontal panto a h is both ivotall and slidingl secure within the slide bloc g, (see Fi lyI). Thus it4 will be seen that the blocks jg and g form adjustable fulcrums for the horizontal and vertical pantograph, said fulcrums being at right angles or in other words, at an'angle of 90 de ees to each other. f
rhe tracer holding mechanism, J, is pivotally secured to an extending arm p* of the vertical pantograph as at y, thus allowing the tracer to be raised and lowered according to the depressions or elevations of the pattern, and for this purpose I have illustrated a holder J as being mounted within the slide journal G and being rovided with a rack-7'l Which engages with t turn mounted on the extending arm horizontal pantograph; this causesl tiie horizontal and vertical pantogra h at all parts ow the tracer ga to follow the elevations and depressions to Patented April 21, leoe. 4
The slide journal G is in' of the e pinion j operated by t toget er and 1n unison,
ley n whereby it is opxerated and the cutting tool o is attached to t e tool holder by means of a chuck or other suitable means inasmuch as these tools may be of different sizes andshapes. This is also the casein the tracer'g3 and its attachment to the holder J. The cutter holder N is mounted in a vertical slide journal O which slides upon the sliding plate O in a vertical direction, an arm P is secured to the' journal so as to raise and lower it and with it the tool o inasmuch as the arm P is connected through an adjustable block P which in turn is pivotally connected to the sliding block, which slides upon the arm l2 of the vertical pantograph. The motion of the vertical pantograph imparts to the arm P2, according to the adjustment of the block on said arm P2, vertical motion through the block P of the arm P which in turn 1s imparted to the journal O, tool holder N and tool o. The extent of this vertical motion being governed by the adjustment of the block P on the arm P and thus theA vertical operation of the tool o is controlled bythe vertical movement of the tracer g3 working with the arm P of the pantograph.
It will be seen from the above that in the first lace the horizontal and vertical pantograp s being arranged at an angle-or1 90 degrees, in relation to each other, and being both connected to the tracing mechanism and cutting mechanism, and so connected that according to the adjustment of the cutting mechanism in relation to both pantographs, the complete reproduction, in counterpart, both as to detail, 'alinement and clearness is obtained by operating the tracing tool g3, over and in contact with the surface of the pantograph.
When the work is large, the tool and tracer g3 may be formed for roughing-out work, and iiner tools be employed in the subsequent treatment.
Both the pantographs work together at the tracing point in a horizontal sweep, whether this sweep be curved or straight andhence both antographs at the tracing point, move the vertical pantograph taking care of the elevations and deressions as thev tracerv works over the surace; and the horizontal pantograph determining the alinement and design of the elevations and depressions.
It will be noticed by the construction of a machine made according to the drawings asi above set forth, it renders a machine capable of reproducing any and all designs either of -a llat, curved, or regular surface or formed angular to their base. The engraving can-be accomplished bythis machine as can also a justable connection to the said arm,
more crude or roughkind; this being determined by the tools employed and the ineness of the desi n pattern C. y
It will be notice that the pattern iece can be formed of. lastic material w ich 1s' subsequently drie or `can be molded or engraved, and that it will subserve the purpose of a pattern for the reproduction of any required number of the articles D2. As a matter of fact the attern piece may be formed of any suitab el-material over which the tracing tool g3 will pass and that the design of the same may be formed in any suit'- able manner. What I claim is:
1. An engraving machine comprising two pantographs, located and operating at right angles to each justable fulcrum, said ulcrumsbeing in vertical alinement, said ulcrums comprising sliding blocks, pivotally secured forl the purpose set forth. l
2. The combination machine of two autographs, having a pivotaland adjusta leconnection'with each other, a tracer holder adjustably connected with the saidpantographs, and a tool holder, adjustably-connected with said antographs, to control the ladjustment oi) the tracer holder, and tool holder, to varying surfaces, and tov positively control the relative motion of the tracer and tool holder, the ratio of adjustment, also to control the adjustment after the ratio has been set to a desired adjustment. 8. The combinatlon in an engraving machine of a machine bed or frame having a guide-wa for an ad'ustable work holder, an adjustab e work holder carried in the said guide-way, vthe said machine. bed having a ange guide-way for engagement of an engraving machine, a slide carried b the said guide-way, a vertical pantograph lav'ing an adjustable operative connection with the said slide, an auxiliary pantograph, having an adjustableoperative connection with said slide an adjustable tool holder carried by said pantogra hs, and a tracer holder carried by the sai( pantographs.

The combination in an engraving Inachine of a vertical autograph, and a horizontal pantograph, iaving operative connection with each other, an adjustable tool holder carried on the horizontal pantograph and having a cylindrical part, an arm carried on the vertical pantograph and engaging with the cylindrical part of the tool holder, and permitting a reciprocating movement of the tool holder, and a rotary movement of the arm about the tool holder, and a tracer carried by the pantographs.
10. The combination in an engraving machine of a vertical pantograph, and a horizontal pantograph, and an adjustable operative connection between said pantographs, an ad'ustable tool bracket having a guldeway or an adjustable tool holder; a tool holder carried in said guide-wav; and havin(y a cylindrical part an adjustable arm carrie on said vertlcal pantograph and en aging with the cylindrical part of the tool ho der to permit and control a reciprocating and rotary motion between the tool holder, and thel adjustable arm and a tracer holder carried by the said pantograph.
