Speeication of Letters.Patent.
Patented April 21, 190s.
Application led May 31, 1907. Serial No. 376,467.
To all whom 'it may concern;
lBe it known that I, FREDERICK A. STE- VEN s, a citizen of the United Stat-es, ltsiding at Providence, in the county of Providence and Stateof Rhode Island., have invented certain new and usefulI Improvements `in Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specicatlon, reference being hadV Vtherein to the accompanying drawing.
. This improvement relatesY to that-class of eyeglasses rovided withl bends intermediate the ends' o the brid-ge spring; and the invention consists in'the eculiar construction, arrangement and com ination .of arts hereinafter more particularly describe( and then definitely pointed out .in the claims. The essential purposes being simplicity, strength, and resiliency. i Y i In the accompan ing,` drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are rear and p an elevations respectively of a pair ofeyeglassesembodying my invention. Fig. 3, a section of the same on line :l:
of Fig. 1, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6, front, end and lan `views respectively of the spring memer.
Like reference numerals represent like parts throughout the various figures.
In the drawings, 1,- 2 and 3 represent the usual lenses, boxes and guards of a 4pair of eyeglasses in conjunction with whichj'my in vention may be advantageously employed. The bridge spring member comprises an arched forwardly directed central or bridge portion, 5, having thc stock which forms the end orti'ons thereof bent rearwardly,V upward y, and downwardly. to form substan--.
tially circular loops, 6, located above the boxes. The downwardly extending portions, 7, of the spring are rectilinear and terminate in projections or ngers 8, extending at right angles from the ortions, 7, and in the lvertical planes of the liiops, 6. The vertica their engths with cavities, l0, adapt-ed to receive transversely the screws or other attaching devices, 11. l
The portions, 7, it will be understood, pass down along the inner surfaces of one of the box walls, while the ends of the fingers, 8, abut against the opposite walls ofthe boxes portions, 7, ,are provided intermediate and assist in maintaining the entire bridge spring in rigid connection with the boxes.V
In the embodiment of my invention herein shown the arch, 5, of the .bridge spring 1s shown of thin-or fia-ttened material, while the loops andv legs are round in crosssection.
This structure gives'advantageousresults in actual practice, yet an operative strcture is' attained regardless of the shape of the spring in section.
"It will be observed that the vertical portionsor legs, 7, enter the boxes from above and that the loops, 6, are immediately aboveand adjacent the boxes in cach instance,l b I which means no interference can occur wit the guards when the eyeglasses aredlstended,
and a maximum of compactness and strength with the desired reis attained consistently siliency.
What I claim is,
1. Ina pair of e eglasses the combination with the lenses an( boxes, of a bridge sprin connectinff the boxes, a loop upon each en' of the'briilge portion, rectilinear portions ex,- tendinofrom ,the loops, and {ingers upon the ends ci: the rectilinear portions,
2. In a pair of e eglasses the combination with the lenses amv boxes, of a brid e spring having a curved portion, a vertica loop at I each end of the curved portion, andjabove the boxes, rectilinear 'portions extendin from the loops, and lingers upon the ends o the rectilinear portions.
3. A bridge spring for eyeglasses comprising a reduced central ortion, a loopvupon` each end of the reduce( portion., rectilinear portions extending from the loops, and fingers 'upon the ends of the rectilinear portions.
bridge spring for eyeglasses comprising a curved central portion, a loop upon each end of the central portion,-.rectilinear portions projecting from the loops, and .fingers upon the rectilinear portions in almement with the loo s.
In testimonyniliereof I have affixed my signature in rese-nce oi two witnesses.
