Specification of Letters Patent;

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS M. WALKER, citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to hinged to the base adjacent its ends are end walls which are provided with means for locking them in closed osition, and also with means for'automatical y swinging them outward when unlocked. The angular supporting strips terminate in extensions or rockers, to which are pivoted clamp strips on which the outer side wall or allet is adapted to rest, and means are provi ed for binding the brace strips against the pallet so as to hold said pallet tightly in position against the end walls and base. After a block has been formed within the mold the end walls are adapted to be released and the entire mold swung off to one side. The pallet is then released and will drop upon the rockers thereunder and will cause the molded block to move by gravity out of the mold and rest upon the pallet.
The invention also consists of certain other novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more said mold has been rocked to one side and the pallet released. In this figure the moldedlblock is shown by dotted lines upon the pa let. form of core adapted to be used within the mold.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 11 are base strips preferably angular in cross section, and upon one end of these base strips are integral side strips 2, to which is permanently fastened one slde 3 of the mold. The base 4 of the mold is secured to the base strips 1 and extends therebeyond to permit hinges 5 to be fastened thereto. These hinges serve to secure end walls 6 to the base, and coiled springs 7 are fastened at their ends to the end walls 6 and the base 4, so that said end walls will be automatically opened when released. Ears 8 are secured to the end walls, and pivoted to them are braces 9 which are adapted to be swung at right angles to the end walls and to bear on the base 4 so as to support said end walls in upright positions. The ends of the base strips 1 furthest removed from said strips 2 merge into rockers 10 which extend at obtuse angles to the base strips and are integral therewith. Pivoted to the said base strips close to the rockers are clamping strips 11 which are adapted to rest upon the rockers 10 when the mold is moved upon its side. These clamping strips serve to press a pallet 12 against the end walls 6 so that said pallet will constitute one side of the mold. The pallet and clamping strips are held in these positions by cams 13 which are mounted at one end of end strips 14 pivoted to the upper portions of the side stri s 2. Levers 15 extend from the cams an overlap the rockers 10 and each lever has a shoulder 16 thereon adapted to bindupon the adjoining rocker 10 when the cam 13 has been moved into such a position as to clamp its strip 11 tightly against the pallet 12. By binding on the rockers 10 as shown in Fig. 2, the shoulders hold the earns 13 against movement and causes them to support the pallet 12 against the end walls 6. A bail-shaped su porting rod 17 is pivoted to the lower ends 0 the side strips 2 and is for the purpose hereinafter more fully set forth.
In using the mold herein described, the parts are first clamped together in the position shown in Fig. 1, after which a good Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the quality of concrete or plastic material is placed upon the base 4 so as to form the face of the block. If desired, a cheaper grade of material can then be placed over the first portion, and after the mold has been about one-half filled suitable cores, such as shown at 18, in Fig. 5, can be placed within the mold with their small ends in contact with the pallet 12. The mold is then completely filled, so that the cores will be embedded and after tamping the block is ready to be removed and dried. The removal is accomplished by first swinging the braces 9 m ward against the end walls so that the springs 7 will pull the end walls 6 slightly outward and against the end strips 14. The operator then grasps the two levers 15 and pulls forward and upward upon them. This operation produces two results; first, the entire mold is moved over upon its rockers 10 and, second, the cams 13 are rotated on their pivots so as to remove their pressure on the pallet and thereby permit the earns 13 and strips 14 to be swung out of the pathof the pallet. The pallet and the strips 11 then swing downward by gravity on to the rockers 10 and the molded block moves downward with them and becomes partly withdrawn from the mold, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4. Pallet 12 can then be slid along the rockers 10 so as to completely withdraw the block from the mold, after which the core which then assumes the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4 can be raised out of the block and said block conveyed to any suitable place for drying. Another pallet can then be placed within the mold to replace the one removed and the parts locked in the position shown in Flg. 1, after which the operation above described can be repeated. When the mold is swung over on to its rockers 10 the supporting rod 17 is pulled upward therewith although its lower portion remains in contact with the ground. This strip 17 acts as a brace and prevents the mold from re-assuming its normal position during the removal of the block. The position of the strip 17, when acting as a supporting brace, is clearly shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a mold comprising a base a side and end walls; of a removable pallet constituting one side of the mold, and rockers extending from the base and overlapping and adapted to support said side.
2. The combination with a mold comprising a base, a side and end walls; of a removable pallet constituting one side of the mold, rockers extending from the base and overlapping said side, and means interposed between the rockers and side for locking said. side to the mold.
3. The combination with a mold comprising a base, a side and end walls; of rockers extending at angles from the base, a pallet interposed between the rockers and the end walls and constituting a side of the mold, and means for clamping the pallet upon the mold.
4. In a mold the combination with a base, a side and end walls; of rockers extending at angles from the base, clamping strips movably connected to the base and adapted to be supported by the rockers, a detachable pallet interposed between the strips and end walls and adapted to form a side of the mold, and means for clamping the pallet between the end walls and the strips.
5. The combination with a mold comprising a base, a side and end walls; of rockers permanently connected to the mold and extending at angles to the base thereof, a pallet interposed between the rockers and the end walls and constituting a side of the mold, and means for securing the pallet upon the mold, and a supporting rod pivoted to the mold and adapted to hold it with its rockers downward.
6. A mold having rockers extending across one side thereof, said side being separate from the rockers and constituting a pallet.
7. A mold having outwardly movable end walls and rockers extending to one side of the mold, said side constituting a pallet.
8. A mold comprising a base and side wall, end walls movably connected to the base, braces therefor, means for automatically moving the end walls in opposite directions, rockers extending from the base, and a detachable side constituting a pallet interposed between the rockers and the end walls.
9. In a mold the combination with side and base strips and a side and base secured to said strips, respectively; of rockers integral with and extending at angles from the base strips, end walls movably connected to the base, and a pallet interposed between the end walls and the rockers, said pallet constituting a side of the mold.
10. In a mold the combination with side and base strips and a side and base secured to said strips, respectively; of rockers integral with and extending at angles from the base strips, end walls movably connected to the base, a pallet interposed between the end walls and the rockers, said pallet constituting a side of the mold, end strips secured to the side strips, and clamping devices upon the end strips for holding the pallet upon the end walls.
11. In a mold the combination with side and base strips and a side and base secured to said strips, respectively; of rockers integral With and extending at angles from the base strips, end walls movably connected to the base, a pallet interposed between the end Walls and the rockers, said allet constituting the mold and across but separate from said a side of the mold, end strips secured to the l wall and adapted to support said wall when side strips, clamping devices upon the end strips for holding the allet upon the end wal s, and means upon t e clamping devices for frictionally engaging the rockers to hold said devices in clamping osition.
12. In a mold the com ination with side and base strips and a side and base secured to said strips, respectively; of rockers integral with and extending at angles from the base strips, end walls movably connected to the base, a pallet interposed between the end walls and the rockers, said pallet constituting a side of the mold, and a sup orting strip pivoted to the side strips and adapted to automatically support the mold when upon the rockers.
