ANT-TRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application filed December 9, 1907. Serial No. 405,811.
which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in ant traps.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple inexpensive sheet metal trap not having any movable parts.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown in Fi ure 1 a perspective view of my which extends upwardly as shown in Fig. 2
While the reduce end is of a size corresponding to the opening a), this frusto-conical member 4 being secured to the base plate 1 in the manner disclosed in Fig. 2.
Secured to the base plate 1 is a sheet metal casing 2 also of frusto-conical form, this casing, however, not being inverted as is the one marked 4 and this casing 2 is provided with a peripheral knife edged flange 5 and an inwardly extending horizontally disposed flange 3, said flange 3 and the upper termination of the frusto-conical member 4 lying in a common plane as shown in Fig. 2. The base plate 1 is suitably secured to the casing 2 at that point where the flange 5 extends from the conical portion of the casing as shown. In its use this trap is placed over the ant burrow with its central opening as surrounding the burrow while the peripheral flange 5 is embedded into the earth so as to bring the base plate 1 into as close a contact as possible with the earth surrounding the ant hole above. When so arranged the opening 00 presents the only means of escape and the ants coming out of the burrow will travel up the inverted frusto-conical inner member 4 and in attempting toescape therefrom will fall into the trap proper and by virtue of the inclined inner Walls of the casing will be trapped as they will be unable to climb up the same as the inner wall of this casing 2 will present a smooth surface; and
Having thus described my said invention what I claim as new is As disclosed, an ant trap comprising the combination with a centrally perforated plate, of an inverted sheet metal frusto-conical'member having its reduced end secured to said plate proximal to said perforation, and a sheet metal frusto-conical casing having a peripheral cylindrical knife edged flange and an upper horizontally disposed flange, said plate being secured within said frusto-conical casing at the point forming the union of said peripheral flange and conical portion, the upper end of said inverted frusto-conical member terminating in a plane coincident with the plane of said horizontal flange as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN T. HOWARD.
