BOLSTER-STAKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it'may concern Be it known that I, JACOB HEIMLIOHER, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Defiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved BolsterStake, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The pur ose of this invention is to provide novel etails of construction for a Wagon bolster stake, which is light, very strong, in-
expensive and thatisadapted for convenient longitudinal adjustment, so as to afford lateral support to the sides of wagon bodies that may have different heights.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described, and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a broken and partly sectional side view of the improved stake and of a wagon bolster whereon the stake is erected and secured; Fi 2 is a transverse sectional view substantial y onthe line 2-2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, substantially on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1, and Fig; 4 is a transverse sectional view, substantially on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
In the drawings that represent the construction of the device and its application, A indicates a bolster, B a floor board for a wagon body, and C a side board of said body.
The im roved stake in art consists of a metal bo y formed preferably of two similar ieces of channel iron or steel, these pieces ein secured together back to back, so that the flanges a thereon project oppositely in airs, the united channel bars taken together orming an I-bar 5 that is the body of the stake; and it may here be explained that said body may also be of solid metalrolled into form in lieu of making the body from two channeled bars.
In the bolster A, adjacent the end shown, a vertical mortise b is formed for rece tion of the body portion 5 of the stake, the atter having outwardly turned flanges c on the lower end thereof which are embedded in the lower side of the bolster adjacent to the walls of the mortise, and serve to aid in supportin the body 5 u right. A bolt d is inserted through aline perforations in the side walls of the bolster A and body 5, which when secured by a nut or other means will rigidly secure the stake-body 5 in place on the bolster, and for convenience the part 5 is termed a fixed section of the stake.
The device further consists of a slidably adjustable section that is constructed and arranged as follows: Two similar channel bars of metal, represented respectively by the reference characters 6, e are held spaced apart parallel with each other by the insertIOII'bGtWGBIl said bars, at their upper ends, of two flat flanges g, 9 that are integral end portions of an open ring-like band 9', said anges being lapped together and secured as spacing plates between the bars 6,
0 by one or more rivets or bolts e, one appearing in the drawings. The joint thickness of the flanges g g is equal to or may slightly ex ceed that of the body of the fixed section 5, so that the latter may be slid between the channel barse, e, which with theband g and its flanges g g ,-constitute the adjustable section of the stake. To permit the free longitudinal movement of the channel bars 6, e over the fixed section 5, said bars are slightly reduced in width as compared with that of the fixed section 5, so that the side flanges e of the channel bars may slide b'e-.

As shown in Fig. 4, an'open ring or band i, is mounted and adjustably secured upon the I-bar 5, said band having flanged end portions 6. formed thereon, that are bent on the body of the band so as to render them parallel with each other and spaced apart so that they may embrace either the channel bars 6, e, or the I-bar 5, as shown in Fig. 4. In the flanges i opposite perforations are formed that register .with any of the transverse perforations h in the stake, said registered erforations receiving a bolt such as h, whlch is provided with a nut k that by proper adjustment, clamps the channel bars 6, e firmly upon the I-bar. It will be seen that the channel bars e, 0 may be given any tion of the stake desired position on the fixed section or I-bar 5 and firmly secured thereto by the bolts h. A filling block is provided for reinforcing the channel bars 6, 6 when the adjustable secis raised, said block, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, consisting of a flat body portion m and flanges m that project at each side of the body respectively, said flanges affording a head therefor. The filling block may be formed of plate metal bent into form, or may be a solid block cast or forged into shape as may be most convenient to manufacture. At a suitable point, a perforation is formed in the body m for reception of a cross bolt, such as h. The body portion m of the filling block is introduced between the spaced channel bars e, 6 above the upper end of the fixed section 5 and is secured in place by a cross bolt and nut W, or the like, the filling block that receives the end of said section of the stake obviously reinforcing the spaced channel bars and stiffening their connection with the fixed section 5 when the upper section is elevated more or less as may be required.
It will be seen in Fig. 1 that the improved stake will afford lateral support for the side board of a wagon body and be capable of change in height to conform with side boards of difierent heights.
The bands g and i, that project at the outside of the stake, may be utilized for holding the lower portion of a tubular metal or a solid wooden stake, not shown, frequently used on permit the upper or adjustable freight hauling wagons for the lateral support of a high load carried thereon.
It will be seen that the improved stake in proper number, will reliably support the sides of wagon bodies that may vary in height,
the lower end of each channel bar I and also facilitate the cooperation of higher stakes either of wood or metal, as occasion may require.
Having thus described my invention, .l. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A Wagon bolster stake, comprising a fixed section in the form of an I-bar, an ad justable section formed of two channel bars spaced apart at their upper ends by the insertion therebetween of means consisting of an open ring having flanged ends that are secured between said channel bars, the two channel bars being slidable upon the fixed section, between flanges thereon, both sections having transverse spaced perforations therein that re ister with each other, and bolts and nuts for clamping the sections together after the bolts are inserted through opposite perforations.
2. In a wagon bolster stake of the character described, the combination with a fixed section having the form of an I-bar, and an adjustable section slidable and securable on the fixed section, comprising two channel bars s aced apart at their u)per ends, of a fillin lock having a flat body and a transverse y flanged head 011 one end, said body being secured between the channel bars in contact with the fixed section.
