WIND-TURBINE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application filed March 11, 1907. Serial No. 361,768.
7 air currents to the wheel thereof. I
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, without de arting from the spirit of the invention.
11 the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is an elevational view of the present turbine, Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken centrally thereof, Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1,Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the arrangement of the doors.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a base platform 5, upon which are mounted upwardly extending supporting legs 6, carrying a platform 7 at their upper ends. A socket-block 8 is mounted upon the base platform and has seated therein the lower end of a vertical shaft 9 having a bevel gear 10 meshing with a similar gear 11 carried by a horizontal shaft 12 journaled upon the base platform and arranged for connection with the operative mechanism. Uprights 13 are carried by a bottom member 13 and have mounted thereupon a top 14 and secured within these uprights there are a pair of upper and lower horizontally disposed circular bands 15. The shaft 9 is revolubly engaged through the bottom member 13 and is journaled at its upper end in a bearing block 16 mounted upon the top 14. A turbine 17 is mounted upon the shaft 9 between the bottom member 13 and top 14 and consists of hubs 18 to which are secured a plurality of tangential vertically extending transversely curved blades 19.
A plurality of vertical bars 20 are secured to the platform and the top at their ends and are arranged in a circular series surrounding the turbine and to each of these bars there is hinged a door 21 which extends vertically and which is movable upon its hinges into and out of position to close the space between the bar to which it is hinged and the adjacent bar at one side thereof. These doors thus extend tangentially from the circle described by the bars 20 and in a common general direction. Springs 22 are arranged to hold the doors normally at the outward limits of their movement and against the bands which limit such movement.
Each door 21 carries at its free side edge a pulley with which pulleys there is engaged a chain 24, and this chain is also engaged with the pulleys 25 mounted upon the outer faces of the bars 20. Heads 20 and 20 are shown as connecting the members 20. The chain 24 is engaged with a vertical winding drum 26 journaled in the bottom member 13 and in the base platform 5, this drum having a hand wheel 27 by which it may be revolved and being provided also with a ratchet detent 28.
It will be observed that the doors 21. are arranged to direct air currents against the blades of the turbine, and it will be seen that when the drum 26 is operated to wind the chain thereupon, the doors will be moved inwardly.
What is claimed is:
1. A mechanism of the class described comprising a base platform, a platform mounted above said base platform, a bottom member carried by the second named platform, uprights carried by said bottom member, a top secured to said uprights, a revoluble vertical shaft seated at its lower end upon the base platform and engaged through the second platform and bottom member, a turbine mounted upon the shaft above the bottom member, a plurality of current regulating doors arranged for movement toward and away from the turbine, a flexible member connected with the doors for simultaneous movement thereof, circular bands carried by the uprights and arranged to limit the movement of the doors, helical spring means arranged to hold the doors at the outward limit of their movement, and a winding drum carried by the base platform and adjacent the doors and having secured thereto, one end of the flexible member.
2. A mechanism of the class described comprising a base platform, a platform mounted above said base platform, a botbars to which it is hinged and the adjacent bar at one side thereof, a chain engaged around the doors and movably connected with the bars, and a winding drum, the chain being engaged with the drun In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
