Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application filed October 15, 1906. Serial No. 338,911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS L. STUEB- NER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self- Closing Dumpin '-Buckets, of which the following is a speci cation.
This invention relates to a self closing dumping bucket. Its organization comprises a body portion with a pair of counterweighted swinging bottoms fulcrumed thereto, a locking device which will not become unlocked by virtue of the forces established, by the weight of the charge carried in the bucket and adjustable means for controlling the amount and inclinations of the swinging bottoms.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a bucket with an exemplification of my invention, Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 shows a bottom view of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 represents a right hand end view of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 1 with the swinging bottom lowered from the bottom of the bucket, Fig. 6 represents a partial section of Fig. 2 on the line 6, 6, Fig. 7 shows a partial section of Fig. 2 on the line 7, 7, Fig. 8 is a section through one of the swinging bottoms taken on a line 8, 8, of Fig. 3, Fig. 9 represents a section through the other swinging bottom on the same line 8, 8, Fig. 10 shows an end view of the handle with the locking arms.
The bucket is re resented with the body 20, having the parallel sides 21 and the tapering ends 22 reinforced with the strap 23 at the upper ortion thereof. To the sides 21 is attache the bail 24. At the lower ends of the sides 21 are fastened the stiffening side lates 25 in which are fulcrumed the journal bars 26 and 27 that are fastened respectively to the latch arms 28 of the swinging bottom 29, and to the brackets 30 of the swinging bottom 31. Adjustable sto s 70 bear on the stiffening side lates 25, am they have slots 71 that stradcile studs 72. Nuts 73 on the studs secure the stops in different operative positions. To the inside faces of the ends 22 of the bucket, and at the lower edges thereof are fastened the stifiening bars 32, which at their ends are bent parallel to the sides 21 of the body and attached thereto at 33. The said bars 32 are flared at theirtop edges 34.
The swinging bottom 29 consists of the side angles 40 and end angle 41, with the top plate 42 supported thereon. An angle 43 with the ears 44 is attached to the said top plate 42 and to the side angles 40, the outer end 45 of which extends beyond the plate 42 and is slightly bent down. The latch arms 28 extend up from the side angles 40, swing with the ournal bar 26, have the handles 46, and their upper edges 47 conform in shape with arcs of circles struck from the axial centers of the pins 60. To the rear end of the swinging bottom 29 is attached a counter weight 48.
The swinging bottom 31 is comprised of the end angles 50, 51 and the side angles 52, which carry the top plate 53, and the brackets 30 extend from the sides of the swinging bottom and are connected by the journal bar 27, which is fulcrumed in the stiffening side plates 25. A counter weight 54 is fastened to the rear end of the swinging bottom 31. Links 55 are fulcrumed on pins 56 and 57, extending from the latch arms 28 and swinging bottom 31 respectively, so that the bottoms will move in unison.
Latch levers 58 are fulcrumed on the pins 60 and are connected by the handle 61. Each of the latch levers carries a lug 62, the contour of which is formed. end 47 of the latch arm 28, when the swinging bottoms are up in their positions to close the bottom of the bucket. Stops 63 extend from the sides of the bucket in the path of the upper ends of the levers 58.
To charge the bucket the pair of bottoms areplaced in position as shown in Fig. 1, when any charge in the bucket will not disturb the locking device, because the charge on either or both of the bottoms 29 and 31, makes an effort to swing the latch arms 28 to the left, which effort is communicated to the latch levers 58 to turn the lower ends of the latter to the left on the pins 60. The latter movement is impossible on account of the upper ends of the said levers 58 bearing against the stops 63. There is therefore secured a locking device, which with an increase of load in its receptacle will cause its members to become correspondingly more securely and tightly engaged or locked. If it is desired to dump the bucket the handle 61 is raised and the load will push away the swinging bottoms, and allow the charge to to engage with theleave the bucket. After the charge has been emptied from the bucket the bottoms will swing from the positions shown in Fig. 5, to the ositions shown in Fig. 1, the counter weig ts causing the bottoms to swing up after which the members of the locking device become engaged and locked in place.
It will be noted that the ends of the plates 53 and 42 of the swinging bottoms, when they close the bucket abut against each other, and while the bottoms are swinging to close the bucket, the end of the plate 53 will ride just over or on top of the end of the angle 4.4, and thereby cut away an obstruction that might tend to prevent the bottoms swingin up in place.
It wil be noted that the swinging bottoms with their top plates42 and 53 when they are lowered to' open the bottom of the bucket, incline toward each other and form a funnel extending from the bucket to direct the mate rial as it is discharged. The latch arms 28 swing in the path of the adjustable stops 70, and as the latter can be located in different horizontal positions, the lowered position of the said latch arms and consequently the inclinations of the swinging bottoms can be varied, giving a greater or less 0 ening for the bottom of the bucket. The fiandles 46 on the latch arms 28, allow the operator to swing the bottoms independently of their automatic appurtenances.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a bucket the combination of a body, a swinging bottom fulcrumed thereto, a counter weight on the bottom, a latch arm extending from said bottom, a latch lever fulcrumed to said body in the path of the latch arm, a stop in the path of the upper swinging end of the latch lever to control the amount of downward swing of the lower end thereof, the latch lever and latch arm engaging with each other when the bottom is closed against said body, and tightening against each other with any increase of load in said bucket.
2. In a self closing bucket the combination of a body, swinging bottoms fulcrumed thereto, a connection between the swinging bottoms to cause them to swing in unison, latch arms extending from one of said bottoms, latch levers fulcrumed to said body, the two latter elements engaging with each other when the bottoms are closed against said body and tightening against each other with any tendency of the bottoms to swing 0 en, and means to unlock the two latter e ements to lower the bottoms.
3. In aself-closing dumping bucket the combination of a body, stiffening side plates extending from the sides of the body, journal bars fulcrumed-in said side plates, a swinging bottom attached to one of the journal bars, latch arms extending from the said swinging bottom, latch levers fulcrumed to the sides of the bucket and arranged to engage with the latch arms, a swinging bottom attached to the other journal bar, links connecting the latter swinging bottom and the said latch arms.
4. In a self closing dumping bucket the combination of a body, stiffening side plates extending from the sides of the body, journal bars fulcrumed in said side plates, a swinging bottom attached to one of the journal bars,
latch arms extending from the said swinging bottom, pins on the sides of the bucket, latch levers fulcrumed on said pins, lugs extending from the latch levers with their contours formed to arcs of circles struck from the centers of said pins, the contours of the latch levers arranged to engage with the ends of the latch arms, a swinging bottom attached to the other journal bar, links connecting the latter swinging bottom with the said latch arms.
5. I11 a self closing bucket the combination of a body, journal bars fulcrumed with said body, a swinging bottom connected up with one of said bars, latch arms extending from said swinging bottom, latch levers fulcrumed to the bucket and located to engage with said latch arms, a swinging bottom connected up with the other journal bar, and a link connecting the latter swinging bottom and one of said latch arms.
6. In a self closing bucket the combination of a body, a pair of journal bars fulcrumed with said body, a swinging bottom attached to one of the said bars, latch arms extending from the said swinging bottom, latch levers fulcrumed to said body, lugs extending from said latch levers the contours of the latch levers of the same forms as the contours of the ends of the latch arms, a swinging bottom attached to the other journal bar, and links connecting the latter swinging bottom with the said latch arms.
7. In a self closing bucket the combination of a pair of counterweighted swinging bottoms fulcrumed thereto, means to connect the swinging bottoms so that they will move in unison, an angle extending from one of the swinging bottoms, a cover late over the said angle, a cover plate on t e other swinging bottom and located so that it will ride over the said angle, when the swinging ends of the bottoms are adjacent to each other.
8. In a self closing bucket the combination of stiffening side plates extending from the sides of the bucket, a journal bar fulcrumed in each pair of accompanying ends of the said side plates, a latch arm extending from one of the swinging bottoms and fastened to one of the journal bars, brackets extending from the other swinging bottom and fastened to the other journal bar, a pair of pins extending from the latter swinging bottom and a pin extending from each latch arm, a link extending from each pin on the latch arm and connecting with one of the pins extending from the swinging bottom, a journal pin extending from each side of the bucket, a latch lever fulcrumed from each of the latter ins, a lug extending from each latch arm wit an outer contour formed to an arc of a circle struck from the axis of the pin on which it is fulcrumed and arranged to engage with the end of its accompanying latch arm which has a similar contour, and a stop on the side of the bucket for each latch arm.
9. In a self closing dumping bucket the combination of a pair of counter-weighted swinging bottoms fulcrumed thereto, adjustable means to control the inclinations of the bottoms when lowered from the bottom of the bucket.
10. In a self closing dumping bucket the combination of a pair of swinging bottoms fulcrumed thereto, and adjustable means to form a funnel with said bottoms when lowered from the bottom of the bucket.
11. In a self closing dumping bucket the combination of a body, swinging bottoms fulcrumed to the bucket, a locking device connected with the bottoms, an adjustable stop on the bucket to control the positions of the swinging bottoms when lowered from the bucket.
12. In a self closing dumping bucket the combination of a body, swinging bottoms fulcrumed to the bucket, connections be tween the bottoms, latch arms extending from one of the swinging bottoms, adjustable stops on the bucket in the paths of said latch arms.
13. In a self closing dumping bucket the combination of a body, swinging bottoms fulcrumed to the bucket, counterweights on the bottoms, latch arms extending from one of the swinging bottoms, links connecting the other swinging bottom with said latch arms, latch levers journaled to the sides of the bucket located to engage with said latch arms and stops on the sides of the bucket in the path of the latch arms.
