Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT STRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Muskegon, county of Muskegon, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe -Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe cutters.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved pipe cutter adapted to be used as an attachment for drilling machines, or the like.
Another object is to provide an improved pipe cutter which, although very simple and economical in structure, is very strong and durable and capable of heavy work and rapid manipulation.
Further objects, and objects relating to de tails of construction, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which,
Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved pipe cutter. Fig. 2 is a partly vertical section taken on a line corresponding to the broken line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows at the ends of the section line.
In the drawing, similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout both views.
Referring to the drawing, the base 1 is preferably adapted to be placed upon the table of a drill press, or like machine, as my improved machine is especially designed to be operated as an attachment for such machines. Upon the base 1, I arrange supporting rollers 2 for the pipe 3 to be cut. The rollers 2 are journaled on suitable horizontall -arranged shafts 4. These rollers are pre 'erably provided with circumferential grooves 5, the object of which will appear as the description proceeds. On the base 1 is an upright standard or post 6 on which the cutter carrying frame 7 is slidably mounted. The frame 7 is provided with a laterally-projecting arm 8 having a hole therethrough adapted to receive the post, as clearly appears from Fig. 1 of the drawing. The frame 7 is preferably provided with a set screw 9, by means of which it may be secured to the post so as to support the same when adjusting the work or the like.
The cutter disk 10 is carried by the horizontally-arranged shaft 11 and is centrally located above the pipe supporting rollers and in alinement with the circumferential grooves 5 thereof, as clearly appears from the draw ing. I These grooves 5 in the supporting rollers allow the metal to expand as the cutter is fed into the same. The cutter shaft 11 is provided with a shoulder 12 at one end against which the cutter 10 is clamped by means of the sleeve 13 and the nut 14, the inner end of the sleeve engaging one side of the cutter; see Fig. 2.
The cutter shaft is arranged in suitable bearings 15 in the slidable frame, the bearings being provided with bushings, as 16. These bushings are preferably flanged up at their inner ends to engage the sides of the cutter. The driving shaft'17 is arranged in a vertical position in the sliding frame and is adapted to be attached to the spindle of a drill press. As its arrangement on a drill press will be readily comprehended by those Skilled in the art to which this invention relates, I do not here illustrate the same. The shaft 17 is arranged in a suitable vertical bearing 18 provided therefor in the sliding frame, the bearing being provided with a bushing, as 19. At the upper end of bearing is a thrust collar 20, which is secured to the spindle by means of the set-screw 21, so that the cutter is fed or advanced to the work by means of the driving shaft. On the lower end of the driving shaft is a beveled gear 22, which is connected by the idler 23 to the gear 25 on the cutter shaft. The idler gear 23 is mounted on a suitable journal 24, the inner end of which is threaded into the bearing 15 for the cutter shaft. By thus arranging the parts, I secure a pipe cutter adapted for use as a -drill press attachment; and, while the structure is economical, it is capable of very rapid and heavy work and is very strong and durable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: k
1. In a pipe cutter, the combination with the base adapted to be placed on the table of a drill press, of a pair of pipe supporting roll-' ers arranged in a horizontal position on said base, said rollers being provided with circumferential grooves; a vertically-arranged standard carried by said base; a frame slidably mounted on said standard; a set screw for securing said frame to said standard; a horizontally-arranged cutter shaft on said frame; a disk cutter on said shaft arranged centrally above said rollers and in alinement with the grooves therein; a vertically-arranged driving shaft adapted to be attached to the spindle of a drill press carried by said frame and adapted to feed the same; and gear connections for said driving shaft to said cutter shaft.
2. In a pipe cutter, the combination with the base adapted to be placed on the table of a drill press, of a pair of pipe supporting rollers arranged in a horizontal position on said base, said rollers being provided. with circumferential grooves; a vertically-arranged standard carried by said base; a frame slidably mounted on said standard; a horizontally-arranged cutter shaft on said frame; a disk cutter on said shaft arranged centrally above said rollers and in alinement with the said grooves therein; a vertically-arranged driving shaft adapted to be attached to the spindle of a drill press carried by said frame and adapted to feed the same and gear connections for said driving shaft to said cutter shaft.

In a pipe cutter, the combination with the base adapted to be laced on the table of a drill press, of a pair of pipe supporting rollers arranged in a horizontal position; a verticallyarranged standard carried by said base; a frame slidably mounted on said standard; a set screw for securing said frame to said standard; a horizontally-arranged cutter shaft on said frame; a disk cutter on said shaft arranged centrally above said rollers a vertically-arranged driving shaft adapted to be attached to the spindle of a drill ress carried by said frame and adapted to eed the same; and gear connections for said driving shaft to said cutter shaft.
4. In a ipe cutter, the combination with the base adapted to be laced on the table of a drill press, of a pair of pipe supporting rollers arranged in a horizontal position on said base; a vertically-arranged standard carried by said base; a frame slidably mounted on said standard; a horizontally-arranged cutter shaft on said frame; a disk cutter on said shaft arranged centrally above said. rollers; a
vertically-arranged driving shaft adapted to beattached to the spindle of a drill press carried by said frame and adapted to feed the ara e same; and ear connections for said driving shaft to saic cutter shaft.
5. In a pipe cutter, the combination with the base, of a pair of pipe sup orting rollers arranged. on said base, said rol ers being provided with circumferential grooves; a standard carried by said base; a frame slidably mounted on said standard; a set screw for securing said frame to said standard; a cutter shaft on said frame; a disk cutter on said shaft arranged centrally above said rollers and in alinement with the said grooves therein; a driving shaft carried by said frame and adapted to feed the same; and gear connections for said driving shaft to said cutter shaft.
6. In a pipe cutter, the combination with the base, of a pair of pipe supporting rollers arranged on said base, said rollers being provided with circumferential grooves; a standard carried by said base; aframe slidably mounted on said standard; a cutter shaft on said frame; a disk cutter on said shaft arranged centrally above said rollers and in alinement with the said grooves therein; a driving shaft carried by said frame and adapted to feed the same; and gear connections for said driving shaft to said cutter shaft.
7. In a pipe cutter, the combination with the base, of a pair of pipe supporting rollers arranged on said base; a standard carried by said base; a frame slidably mounted on said standard a set screw for securing said frame to said standard; a cutter shaft on said frame; a disk cutter on said shaft arranged. centrally above said rollers; a driving shaft carried by said frame and adapted to feed the same; and gear connections for said driving shaft to said cutter shaft.
8. In a pipe cutter, the combination with the base, of a pair of pipe supporting rollers arranged on said base; a standard carried by said base; a frame slidably mounted on said standard; a cutter shaft on said frame; a disk cutter on said shaft arranged centrally above said rollers; a driving shaft carried by said frame and adapted to feed the same; and gear connections for said driving shaft to said cutter shaft.
