BOTTLE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aprfl 14, 1008.
Application filed lanuary so, 1908. Serial No. 413,379.
I To all whom it may concern:
' obstructed by the contents of the box.
Be it known that I, KARL Bonn, a citizen of Germany, residing at New York city, Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a box or other receptacle adapted to be attached in such a place, preferably in front of a dwelling, as to be readily accessible to a milkman or other deliverer of wet goods.
The construction of the holder is such that the milkman can readily open an emptybox, or a box containing a reversed empty bottle, Without a key, whereas, the lfolder containing a filled bottle, can only be opened by means of a key. Thus, any unauthorized abstraction of the filled bottles is prevented, while the milkman is not burdened with carrying a large number of keys, nor is he taxed with their manipulation while delivering his goods.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front viewo my improved bottle holder; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof; Fi 3 a horizontal section on line 3-3, Fig. 2; I ig 4 a vertical section of the holder, showing it charged with an empty bottle; Fig. 5 a cross section on line 55, Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 a section through the hinge of the pivoted front on line 66, Fig. 2.
A box or other receptacle 10, adapted to more bottles. of milk or rovided with a hinged front 11, which is fu crumed to the sides of the box at or-near its center, -as at 12. When the front is in its uprightposition, it strikes with its up ersection an inner abutment 13, while it str1 es with its lower section an outer abutment L4, butif desired, one of such abutments may be dislpensed with. At its top, front 11 carries a a catch 16 depending from the hinged cover 17 ofthe box. The construction is such that even when the lock is closed, the front may be turned upon its pivot, provided it is not To offset this result, the back-plate 18 of the lock is recessed opposite the operative ends of accommodate one or other wet goods, 1s
- versed position into the box.
I Nearits bottom, hinged front 11 is provided with an inwardly extending beveled projection 21 adapted to engage the bottle 22 placed into the holder. Oneor more springs 23 tend to righten and thereby close t e front as soon as the same is unlocked.
The operation is as follows: The receptacle being locked empty, the milkman pushes against lower end of hinged front 11, to disengage lock 15 from catch 16 and thereby open the look without the-use of a key.
The milkman now raises lid 17, places a filled bottleof milk into the box and closes the lid upon the front '11, whichhas been righted by springs 23, so that catch 16 snaps into enagement with spring bolts 19 and the box %BCOII18S re-locked. If an unauthorized person tries to 0 en the box by ressing agalnst the lower end of front 11, -l11S eflorts will be unavailing, because the shoulder 21 striking the body of the bottle, will prevent the front 11 from swinging inwards at its bottom, (Fig. 2). The house keeper having the proper key ma however, unlock thefibox, remove the fil ed bottle and then re-lock the box. turn an empty bottle, he places it in are- As in this case the contracted neck 20 of the bottle is spaced from shoulder 21, the box front l-lmay-be.
readily swung inwards at its bottom, (Fig. 4), to 0 en the box without the use of a key.
It w' lbe seen that by my invention the milkman may readily open the various boxes withoutv the use of keys, while, as soon as a If the house-keeper desires to rebox is filled, it can no longer-be so opened.
In this way the manipulation is simplified and a safe delivery insured, while, furthermore, empties may be readily returned.
I claim;
1. A bottle holder comprising a receptacle having a hin ed top,
its 11 per an lower ends, an means for look-- ing t e top to the front without preventing it; tlilting o the front, substantially as'speci- 2.v A bottle holder comprising a receptacle having a hinged top,
a front pivoted between a front pivoted between I its up er and lower ends, a recessed lock on front without preventing a, tilting. of the one 0- said arts, and a catch on the other front, substantially. as specified. 10 part adepte to engage said lock, substen Signed by me at New York'city, (Manhattially as specified. ten,) N. Y., this 29 day of January, 1908.
3. A bottle holder comprising a receptacle KARL BODE. having a hinged top, a front pivoted between Witnesses: its upper and lower ends, a shoulder on the I W. R. SCHULZ, front, and means for locking the top to the H THOMAS J. BUCHANAN.
