REMEDYING DEFECTS, SUCH AS BLOWHOLES, IN METAL OASTINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 7, 1908.
Application filed July 11, 190?. Serial No. 383,341.
proposed,'for instance, to raise the metal surrounding the blow-hole, or the like, to a welding heat by the flame of a blow-pipe and to then fill the blow-hole, or the like, with It has also been proposed to remove such blow-holes, or the like, by subsequent heating and by the application of high pressure to the casting but the means hitherto pro osed are either inefficient, or impracticab.e, or require costly apparatus to carry them out. I i I The object of this invention is to provide an efiicient, ready, and economical process by.
which the remedying of the said defects can be effected.
The accompanying drawing is a section through a steel casting (L. a
According to this invention the blow-hole, or cavity 7) if it should not be open on the top is opened at c and thenis provided atv its lower point with a side boring d so that it has communications made, in its upper and lower parts, with the outside of the casting, preferably while it is still hot and then molten metal is poured in at the upper communication 0 and allowed to run 'from the lower communication cZ until the walls of the blowhole, or cavity, are brought to welding heat which can be ascertained by the lower comsage and the blow hole or cavity are filled.
munication d becoming largen When the welding heat is reached the lower communication (1 is closed and the blow-hole, or-cavity b, is filled up with molten metal anda casting is thus obtained in which the defect is completely'remedied and the operation has been carried on with a minimum of waste of metal and withfacility and expedition and without the need for expensive apparatus.
Claim:-
1. The herein described method of filling a blow hole or cavity in a steel casting which consists in first providing in the casting a passage open at both ends and including the hole or cavity to be filled, pouring molten metal through the passage until the walls thereof are heated to welding temperature, then closing the outlet from the passage and continuing the pouring until the entire pas- 2. The herein described method of filling a blow hole or cavity in a steelcasting which consists in forming in the casting a channel or passage leading from the lower end of the blow hole or cavity to an outer face of the casting, pouring molten metal into the blow hole and permitting it to escape through said channel until the walls of the cavity and channel are heated to welding temperature, then closing the outer end of the channel and continuing to'pour molten metal into the blow hole or cavity until it is filled.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
