No. 884,238. PATENTED APR. 7, 1908.
Jv.- SWEENEY. GAR FENDER.
'APLIGATION FILED Image. 1907.
THE NnRRls PETERS ca.l wAsHmcmN, n. cA
JOSEPH SWEENEY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVAIA- CAR-FENDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 26, 1907.
Patented April 7, 190,8.
Serial No. 408,080.
T all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SwEENEY, a citi- Zen of the United States of America, residing if Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Car Fenders, of which the fol owingis a speciication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to street car fenders, and the primary object of my invention is, to provide a novel Jfender for saving the lives of persons run down by a street car.
Another object of this invention is to provide a fender that can be raised and lowered, the fender being normally supported very close to the rails over which a car travels, and is elevated to clear small obstructions that may lie in the path of the fender.
A further object of this inventionis to provide a simple and inexpensive Jfender that will be strong and durable and highly ei'iicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a fender, constructed in accordance with my invention, illustratin the fender as applied to a car, Fig. 2 is a p an of the Jfender as detached from the car, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the supporting brackets of the fender, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a hanger used in connection with the fender.
To put my invention into ractice, I construct my fender of two side fiiames 1 having yoke-shaped ends 2, in which is j ournaled a rod 3. This rod extends transversely of the fender and is provided intermediate the yoke shaped ends 2 with a piece of resilient material 4, such as a rubber hose. Upon the rod 3 within the yoke-shaped ends 2 are journaled wheels 5, these wheels traveling upon the rails or the ground adjacent to said rails over which a car passes. The side frames 1 are connected together vby tie rods 6 and by a netting 7, this netting supporting persons precipitated upon the fender. v
The rear ends of the side frames 1 are connected to the yoke ends 8 of a V-shaped frame 9. Bolts 10 and 11 are used for this purpose. The yoke-shaped ends 8 of the frame 9 are pivotally connected by pins 12 to the lower ends of depending brackets 13, carl ried by the platform 14 of a street car. at North Side, Pittsburg, in the county of The V-sha ed frame 9 has its rear end connected by a ink 15 to a bell crank lever 16, this lever being mounted upon a rod 17, journaled in hangers 18, carried by the latform 14. Connected to the bell crank ever 16 by a link 19 is an operating lever 20, this lever being fulcrumed, as at 21, in the platform 14 of the car. The lever 20 is provided with a spring pressed locking lever 22 operative in conjunction with a segment-shaped rack 23 for holding the operating lever 2() in an adjusted position.
In connection with the street car a fender frame 24 is used, this frame being pivoted, as at 25 upon the platform 14. When the fender is not to be used, the fender frame 24 is swung' upwardly, the -bolts l1 withdrawn, and the fender proper swung to a vertical position. The fender trame 24 is used to prevent persons precipitated upon the netting 7 from being thrown rearwardly beneath the car from the rear end of the netting 7.
It is thought that the operation of raising and lowering my fender will be fully understood from the foregoing description, and I reserve the right to make such changes in the size, proportion and minor details of construction as are permissible by the appended claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. The combination with a car, of a fender, said fender comprising side frames having yoke-shaped ends, wheels journaled in said ends, a netting arranged between said side frames, a V-shaped frame detachably connected to the rear ends of said side frames, brackets carried by said car, and adapted to pivotally support said V-shaped frame, a bell crank lever journaled beneath said car and connecting with the rear end of said V-shaped frame, an operating lever fulcrumed upon said car and connecting with said bell shaped lever, a fender frame pivotally mounted upon said car and adapted to rest upon said side frames, and means for locking said operating lever in a fixed position.
2. The combination with a car, of a fender, said fender comprising side frames having yoke-shaped ends, wheels journaled in said ends, a netting arranged between said side frames, a V-shaped frame detachably connected to the rear ends of said side frames, brackets carried by said car, and adapted to pivotally support said V-shaped frame, a bell crank lever journaled beneath said ear and connecting with the rear end of said V-shaped frame, an operating lever fulcrumed upon said car and connecting with said bell shaped lever, and means for locking said operating 4lever in a fixed position.
3. The combination with a car, of a fender, said fender comprising side frames having yoke-shaped ends, wheels journaled in said ends, a netting arranged between said side 15 frames.,l a /shaped frame detachably connected to the rear ends of said side frames, brackets carried by said carI and adapted to pivotally support said V-shaped frame, a.
bell crank lever journaled beneath said car and connecting with the rear end of said V-shaped frame, and an operating lever fulcrumed u on said car and connecting with said bell s aped lever.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH SWEENEY.
