UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREMONT R. HARRIS, OF KENMARE, NORTH DAKOTA.
INCUBATOR-ALABM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREMONT R. HARRIS, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Kenmare, in the county of Ward, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incubator Alarms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in incubator and brooder alarms and ithas particular reference to an electric alarm which is sounded by movement of the damper in either direction in accordancewith temperature variations.
In connection with a device of the above type the invention has for its object to provide an alarm including adjustable contact members which may be set at selected positions with lation to the damper arm to effect the desired arrangement of the cooperating parts.
The invention aimsas a further object to provide a novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference desi nating similar parts throughout the severa views, wherein:
Figure l-is a top plan view of an incubator provlded with an alarm constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side, elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the adjustably movable blocks upon which the cont act members cooperating with the damper arm to close the circuit are mounted. Fig. 4 is a detailed. perspective view of said blocks together with the contact members and the alarm connection employed in connection therewith. Fi 5 is a detailed view showing a slightly modi ed embodiment of the invention in which the damper arm carries a circuit closing wire. Figs. 6 and 7 are views showing in top plan and side elevation the application of the present invention to a brooder or incubator having its damper arm located at one side thereof.
Referring specifically to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates an incubator or brooder upon the top of which is pivoted a damper arm 2 which is raised and Specification of Letters Patent.

temperature variations of a source of heat supply 3. Upon the incubator 1 there is fiXed'a base block 4 which at its rear end is connected by means of hinges 5 to an adjustlowered on its pivot in accordance with the I ably movable block 6, the adjustable position of which is eflected by means of a win screw 7, threaded through the block 6 an bearing against the front end of block 4. The block 6 is provided adjacent its rear end, but forwardly of the hinges 5, in order that no short circuiting may occur, with binding posts 8, which have connection with wires 9 and 10, the former leading to a battery 11 and the latter to an electric bell 12, a wire 13 being interposed between said bell and the other pole of the battery 11. The binding posts 8 likewise have connection with forwardly projecting rods 14 and 15 in line with the respective wires 9 and 10. The rods 14 and 15 have their ends bent upon themselves in s aced relation, as at 16 and 17 respective y, the ends thus bent being directed rearwardly and overlying the damper arm 2, which, upon its extreme movement in either direction, is designed to close the bell circuit by contact with the rods 14 and 15, or with the bent ends 16 and 17. The wires 14 and 15 are proportioned with relation to the damper arm in order that the contact may be effective at any desired amplitude movement of the latter by means of the screw 7, which,
upon rotation in the proper direction, will raise or lower the block 6 on its hinges, in accordance with the adjustment desired.
In Fig. 5, the modification resides in providing the arm 2 with a wire contact memher, the major portion of which is coiled about the arm 2, the ends of the coils being bent as at 19 and 20 to overlie the arm 2 in parallelism and having their extremities secured to said arm. The ends 19 and 20 lie in intimate relation to the arm 2 and are designed to engage the ends 16 and 17 of the rods 14 and 15 as contacts in establishing the circuit.
In the adaptation of the invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the construction is precisely the same as above enumerated, but the damper arm is supported at the side of the incubator or brooder. This arrangement necessitates the use of an angular shelf 21 secured to the side of the incubator or brooder and serving to support the blocks 4 and 6 and their adjuncts.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efficient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined inthe appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with an incubator or brooder having a movable damper arm, of blocks hingedly connected at their rear ends, contact Wires carried by the blocks and located in position for engagement by the damper arm, one of the blocks being movable with respect to the other to vary the position of the wires with respect to the arm, means for holding the. movable blockat different oints of its movement, and a battery and bell in circuit with the wires.
2. The combination with an incubator or brooder having a movable damper arm of a lower stationary block, an upper block hinged at its rear end to the rear end of said stationary block, said upper block being adjustably movable with relation to the lower block, binding posts carried by the upper block and wires connected to said binding posts and formed at their ends for engagement with said damper arm upon movement of the latter in either direction.
3. The combination with an incubator and an electric alarm circuit including two spaced uninsulated contact wires, of a movable damper arm and a member on said damper arm arranged for simultaneous contact with said wires, said member comprising a body coiled about said damper arm and having its ends extended in parallelism to said body and in opposite directions, the said extended ends overlying the said coiled body.
In testimony whereof, I affiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
FREMONT R. HARRIS.
