JAMES JOREY, OF WESTVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 88,304, dated Ma/rch 30, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-SHOES.
The Schedule :eter-red to in mueynettera Patent and making party! the umo.`
To all whom it ma/y cenami.:
` nection with the accompanying diawiugs, hereinatter referred to, forms a full and exact specitication of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principle of my said improvement, by which my invention may be dlstinguished from all others of a similar class,
together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
This inveution relates to a new and useful improvelment in that class of horse-shoes which are provided with adj ustable or removable calks; and
.[t consists in having the calk, clamp, and a'clip, all combined in one piece, and made out of a single piece of metal, substant-ially as' hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby considerable economy is efl'eeted in manufacturing horse-shoes of the kind above specified, and, at the same time, a very secure connect-ion of the calk, clip, and clamp, to the shoe, obtained.
y In the accompanying sheet of diawings- Figure 1 is a longitudinal Vertical section of my invention.
Figura 2, a fear-end view of the same.
Figurc 3, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several drawings. i
A represeuts a horse-shoe, which is bent in the usual form, or shape, but has no calks or clips permanently attached or t'ormed on it.
B represents what may be termed a` clam p, constructed of a flat plate, (t, bcnt npward at its rear end, as shown at b, and having a downward projection, c,
'at its front end, the pendent projection c forming the front, or toe-calk of the shoe.
Besides this pendent projection, there is an upright one. d, directly above and in line with o.
This npright projection is a clip, which, when the shoe is attached to the foot of the horse, bears against the front side, or wall of the hoof, and serves to retain, or aid in retaining the shoe in proper position.
Hitherto, this clip has been made on the shoe, and permanently connected thcrewith, either by striking,
or swaging np a portion of the shoe. This adds materially to the labor and expense of manufacture. By my improvement, the calk, clip, and clamp, are all made and formed in one piece, sepalate from the shoe. This may he done by means of a swage, or by rolling, at a very moderate expense.
The clamp B is fitted to the under side of the shoe, and secured thereto by a screw, e, the front and rear 'sides of the shoe being notched out, as shown at f, the front notch receiving thelower part of the clip d, and the rear one receiving the upper part of the pmjection b, at the rear end of the plate a of the clamp.
' By this arrangement, all latem-l movement of the calk, clip, and clamp, is prevented, and forward and backward displacement of the same avoidedLby the clip bearing against the front edge of the shoe, and the upright projection b of the plate a of the clamp bearing against the rear edge of the shoe, the screw e holding the clamp firmly to the under side of the shoe.
the toe-calks of horse-shoes, the heel-calks having clips and clamps formed in one piece with them, substantially the same as described for the toe-calk.
I do not claim a removable or detachable calk for a. horse-shoe, for they have been previously used and arranged, or applied in various ways; neither do I claim a clip in itself considered, for they have been used for an indefinite period, but al\vays,-so far as I .am aware, swaged, or struck up from the shoe, and,,consequently, permancntly attached thereto, or forming a part of the same.
I do not claim, broadly, forming the calk, clip, and plate, to which they are attached, in one piece, as such construction is old; but,
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The plate B, provided with oalk c and clip l,on the forward end, and clamp b on the rear end, all constructed in one piece, and fitted between'the shoulder fon the shoe, and securedto the latter by means of the screw e, as herein set forth and shown.
