ENGINE-STOP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VERNON JAY KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Engine-Stops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an engine stop of that type which can be controlled from a suitably remote point to cut off the supply of motive fluid to the engine under emergency conditions and thereby prevent the engine from running away and causing destruction.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character so as vide a cutoff valve in the steam supply pipe to be comparatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture and install, and thoroughly reliable and eflicient in use.
A further object of the invention is to prothat is actuated by the falling of a weight connected through a cable with a drum on the stem of the valve, the drum being normally held in locked position by a suitable device controllable from any convenient point, as for instance, the engineers oflice or similar place.
Another object is the provision of a looking device for controlling the drum on the valve stem which device is mounted on a bracket adapted to be attached to the steam, supply pipe and associated with the device is an electro-magnet which, when actuated, releasesthe locking device so as to permit the drum to rotate under the action of the weight or equivalent motor.
With these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one of the embodiments of the invention, the figure is a side elevation of the apparatus.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a steam supply pipe having a cut-off valve 2 of any approved construction, there being arranged on the stem 3 of the latter a drum 1 and a hand. wheel 5. Suitably attached to the stem and supply pipe 1 is a bracket 6 on which is fulcrumed at 7 a bell crank lever 8 having one arm bent into a pawl or dog 9 Specification of Letters Patent.

disposed over the drum and adapted to engage in a notch 10 in the rim of the latter, whereby the drum is prevented from moving when the apparatus is in set or operative position. Attached to the drum to wind and unwind on the latter is a cable 11 which passes over suitably arranged pulleys 12 and 13 to and around a pulley 14 attached to weights 1 5, the end of the pulley being anchored at 16 on a bracket 17. The weight is connected with a cross piece 18 that moves up and down on guide rods 19 which are connected by a cross piece 20 at their lower ends and. are provided with cushioning devices or helical springs 21 arranged on the guide rods whereby the weight 15 in falling, is cushioned and brought gradually to rest. This guide frame for the weight may be arranged on the ceiling of the engine room or at any other convenient point and constitutes a motor forquickly closing the valve as soon as the locking device or pawl 9 is released from I the drum.
The locking device for the drum can be operated in any suitable manner and in the present instance, the lever 8 is actuated by a contractile spring 22 anchored at one end of the bracket 6. The lever 8 is held in set position by a latch 23 fulcrumed at 24 on the bracket and arranged so as to engage behind the extremity of the upright arm of the lever and disposed under the latch, is a spring stop 25 against which the lever strikes when the latch is released. upper end is an electro-magnet 26 having a core 27 and an armature 28 that is hingedly connected with the latch. This electro magnet is connected in circuit with a suitable source of current and which circuit includes a switch located in the engineers office or other suitable point, whereby the electro magnet can be energized when it is desired to bring the engine suddenly to rest.
In practice, the parts are in the position shown in the figure and when under any emergency condition, it is desired to stop the engine, the circuit including the electro magnet 26, is closed whereupon the armature 28 is drawn inwardly and the latch re leased from the lever so that the latter moves to the dotted line position to disengage the dog 9 from the drum. The weights will immediately drop and thereby rotate the drum and cause the valve to close with the consequent effect that the engine will be shut down. When the emergency onditions of 011 the bracket 6 at its L the apparatus, necessitating the shutting down on the engine, have been overcome, the valve can be again opened by turning the hand wheel 5, which simultaneously winds up the cable 11 on the drum 4 and raises the weights to normal position. While the wheel 5 is held, the lever is drawn forwardly so as to engage the dog 9 in the notch of the drum, and as the lever is drawn forwardly, the latch 23, together with the armature 28, will drop behind the lever and hold it in set position. The dropping of the-latch 23 is limited by the stop 25. From this, it will be seen that the valve can be opened and the apparatus set in a simple and convenient manner, and that the device can be unlocked to permit the closing of the valve when occasion requires.
From the foregoing descrpition, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to'be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is merely illustrative'and that such changes may be made when desired, as are within the scope of the claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a supply pipe, a valve therein, a drum on the stem of the valve, a
bracket on the supply pipe, a locking device on the bracket directly engaging the drum, a latch fulcrumed on the bracket, an electro magnet controlling the latch, and a motor connected with the drum for actuating the valve.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a supply pipe, a valve therein, a bracket on the valve, a locking device mounted on the bracket, a spring tending to unlock the said device, a latch mounted on the bracket and adapted to engage the-device, an electro magnet provided with an armature hingedly connected with the latch, and a motor for closing the valve when the said device is unlocked.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a supply pipe, a valve therein, a support on the pipe, a bell crank lever having one arm formed intoa dog, a spring for actuating the lever, a latch mounted on the support and arranged to engage behind one arm of the lever, a stop for the latch and lever, an electro magnet having an armature hingedly connected with the latch a drum on the stem of the valve engaged by the dog, a motor for turning the valve in one direction when the dog is released, and a wheel attached to the drum for turning the valve in the opposite direction.
4. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a supply pipe, a valve therein, a drum on the stem of the valve, a hand wheel connected with the valve, a cable adapted to wind on the drum, a weight attached to thecable, pulleys over which the cable passes means for guiding the movement of the weight, and cushioning devices for checking the fall of the weight.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a pipe, a valve therein, a drum on the stem of the valve, a weight, and a flexible element arranged to wind and unwind on the drum and connected with the weight, with a bracket mounted on the pipe and provided with spaced arms, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on one of the arms and provided with a pawl for interlocking with the drum, a spring attached to the bracket and lever for disengaging the pawl, an electro-magnet disposed between the arms and supported on the one opposite from that having the lever, a latch hinged on the bracket and adapted to engage behind the free end of the lever, a core for the electromagnet hingedly connected with the outer end of the latch and serving as a weight for holding the latch in normal position behind the lever, and a yielding stop on the bracket arranged to support the latch in normal position and to receive the lever when the latter is released.
