Be it known that I, EDWARD J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pasteurizing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pasteurizing apparatus of. the general type illustrated in United States Letters Patent granted to me on November 5, 1907, No. 869,978, and the object thereof is to increase the e'lliciency of a device of this character by incorporating therein suitable .means for properly distributing the heating medium and so utilizing the same as to accomplish the best re sults.
The invention contemplates providing a steam chamber immediately below the treating plate over which the milk is distributed in such a manner that the heating medium will be forced from the outside toward the center in a reverse direction to the milk under the influence of centrifugal force, thereby bringing the portions of the heating medium containing the greatest amount of heat in immediate contact with the outer portions of the treating plate, from which portions the heating medium is gradually forced inward toward the center of the device becoming cooler in doing so. Other new and novel advantages constituting objects of this invention will be more specifically described later.
A practical embodiment of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a central, vertical sectional view of a device containing this invention.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 in dicates an upright standard having across its lower end a web 2 provided centrally with a step 3 in which is mounted the lower end of an upright rotatable shaft 4. This shaft 4 bears on its lower portion a beveled gear 5 arranged to mesh with a beveled gear 6 mounted on a shaft 7 in a bearing 8 in the side of the standard 1. The outer end of this shaft 7 is provided with tight and loose pulleys 9 for the reception of a belt used in communicating motion thereto. At the point where the shaft 4 passes through the top of the standard 1 there is provided a stuffing box 10 to prevent the escape of liquid down the sides of the shaft. Mounted on the top of the standard 1 is a tank 11 fitting closely about the shaft and secured fixedly in position and further provided with an open vent or drain 1.2 in its lower portion. Surrounding the upper por tion of the tank 11 is a trough 13 secured'to the tank and supported thereby and having at one or more places an offtake pipe 14. Inclosing the shaft 4 immediately above the bottom of the tank 11 is a hollow steam chamber 15 to which extends an inlet pipe 16 closed by a cook 17 by which steam is ad-' mitted to the chamber. This chamber is provided in its bottom portion with a stuffing box 18 to prevent the leakage of steam there-v from. Projecting into the chamber 15 from above is a short pipe 19 surrounding the shaft 4 and of a considerably greater diameter, thereby forming an annular space between the two. At the point where this pipe occurs the chamber 15 is made steam-tight by means of a stufling box 20. On the upper end of the pipe 19 is a discharge chamber 21 secured tightly to the shaft and to the pipe 19 and designed to rotate therewith and from which extend a plurality of discharge pipes 22 from which the steam which enters the chamber 15 from the pipe 16 may escape. I preferably place in each discharge pipe 22 a member 23 provided with openings for the purpose of permitting water to enter and be discharged outward with the steam at the end of the discharge pipe, thus forming an inspirator or injector.
Secured fixedly on the pipe 19 is a fluid tank 24 composed of a bottom member 25 preferably concave in shape and provided with a top 26 preferably formed with a plurality of annular corrugations for a purpose to be later described. This top 26 forms with the shaft 4 and the outer edge of the lower portion 25 of the tank 24 fluid-tight joints so as to prevent the escape of liquid contained therein. The outer edge of the lower portion 25 of the tank 24 is convex in formation and bends down over the main portion of the tank 11. extending into the trough 13 a short distance. Fixedly secured to the sides of the lower member 25 of the tank 24 is a diaphragm 27 preferably conforming in contour to the shape of the top 26 of the tank 27 and spaced apart therefrom a short distance to form a chamber therebetween. Mounted on the outeredge of the trough 13 is a cover 29 provided on its central portion with a filling funnel 30 surrounding the shaft 4, the use and operation of which w1ll be later described.
In the bottom portion 25 of the tank 24 is a safety valve 31 so designed as to relieve excessive pressure in the tank 24, the valve being normally kept closed by means of a coiled spring 32 acting against said valve for this purpose.
The operation of this device 1s as follows :Power is communicated to one of the pulleys 9 by means of a belt which in turn revolves the beveled gear 6, the motion of which is communicated to the intermeshing gear 5, which being fixedly secured to the shaft 4 in turn rotates the same. The distributing chamber 21 being fixedly secured to the shaft revolves in unison therewith as does also the pipe 19 and tank 24. During the revolution of the tank 24 steam is ad mitted through the pipe 16 to the chamber 15 and from thence it passes upward through the distributing chamber 21 and outward through the discharge pipes 22 or into the space bounded by the members 26 and 27 preferably at a point remote from the open ing 28 from which it is gradually forced in ward as it accumulates in the space between the members 26 and 27; and as the material of which the device is composed is generally cold when the steam is first introducedyit rapidly condenses until water has accumulated in the tank sufficiently to cover the lower portions of the discharge pipes containing the lateral inlet openings in the members 23. By this time the tank has become warm and the constant ingress of steam maintains it in this condition during use, and as the steam discharges from the ends of the pipes 22 it draws water in through the openings in the members 23 and from thence carries it outward with the steam and upward into the space between the members 26 and 27 which serves to keep the member 26 at the correct temperature during the operation of the device.
It will be noted that the discharge ends of the pipes 22 are located at a point remote from the opening 28, and as the steam and water contain a greater amount of heat when they first emerge from the ends of the pipes 22, they will cause the outer edge of the plate 26 to be kept at a higher temperature than those portions of this member nearer the shaft 4, which is a result greatly sought after by operators of this type of devices. When it is desired to pasteurize milk the required quantity is poured into the filling funnel 30 from whence it flows onto the top of the plate force outward over the various corrugations existmg 1n the plate 26 until it drains into the trough 13 from whence it may be drawn away by means of the offtake pipe 14. It will be noted that as the outer edges of the member 26 are hotter than the more central portions, milk will be gradually heated to a higher temperature as it flows outward from the shaft 4, increasing in temperature proportionately with the distance it travels from the shaft.
What I claim anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a closed rotatable tank the top of which constitutes a treating plate, means for receiving the liquid driven from said top by centrifugal force, means for causing portions of said treating plate to difier in temperature whereby the edge portions thereof are hotter than the central portions, and means for rotating the same.
2. A device of the class described com prising a closed rotatable tank the top of which constitutes a treating plate, means for receiving liquid driven from said top by centrifugal force, means for heating the outer portions of said treating plate hotter than the more central portions, and means for rotating the same.
3. A device of the class described comprising a closed rotatable tank the top of which constitutes a treating plate, a diaphragm within said tank spaced apart from the top thereof, means for receiving the liquid driven from said top by centrifugal force, means for introducing a temperature controlling me dium into the space between said top and diaphragm, and means for rotating said tank.
4. A device of the class described comprising a closed rotatable tank the top of which constitutes a treating plate, a perforated diaphragm within said tank spaced apart from said top, means for receiving a liquid driven from said top by centrifugal force, means for introducing a temperature controlling medium into the space between said diaphragm and top, and means for rotating said tank.
5. A device of the class described comprising a closed rotatable tank the top of which constitutes a treating plate, a perforated diaphragm in said tank spaced apart from said top and provided with a central opening, means for receiving a liquid driven from said top by centrifugal force, means for introduc ing a temperature controlling medium into the outer portions of said tank between said diaphragm and top, and means for rotating said tank.
6. A device of the class described comprising a closed rotatable tank the top whereof constitutes a treating plate for the reception of a liquid to be treated transversely arranged with respect to the aXis of rotation of said tank, a collecting trough surrounding said tank for receiving the liquid from said treating plate, a diaphragm spaced apart from said top, means for introducing a temperature controlling medium to the space between said diaphragm and top, and means for rotating said tank. a

A device of the class described comprising a rotatable member, means for rotating the same, a closed tank .mounted on said member arranged to move in unison therewith the top of which constitutes a treating plate, a collecting trough surrounding said treating plate arranged to receive liquid therefrom, a diaphragm in said tank spaced apart from said top, temperature controlling medium to the space between said diaphragm and top, and means to deposit liquid to be treated on the central portion of said treating plate.
8. A device of the class described comprising a horizontally-rotatable closed tank, the top of which is arranged to constitute a treating plate transverse to the axis of rotation of said tank, means to rotate said tank, a receiving trough surrounding said treating plate arranged to receive liquid therefrom, means to deposit liquid on the upper surface of said treating plate near the center thereof, a safety valve carried by said tank, a diaphragm below said top, and means to introduce a temperature controlling medium to the space between said diaphragm and top.
9. A device of the class described comprising a closed rotatable tank the upper surface of the top whereof is arranged to constitute a treating plate transverse to the axis of rotation of said tank, said treating plate being provided with a plurality of concentric corrugations, a collecting trough surrounding said treating plate to receive liquid therefrom, means plate near the center thereof, a diaphragm in said tank spaced apart from said top, means to introduce a temperature controlling medium into the space between said top and diaphragm, and means to revolve said tank.
10. A device of the class described comprising a shaft suitably mounted, means'to rotate said shaft, a collecting trough inclosing the upper end of said tank, an outlet to said collecting trough, a drip to said tank, a rotatable closed tank mounted on the upper end of said shaft the-upper surface of the top of which is arranged to constitute a treating plate having a downturned outer edge arranged within said collecting trough, a diaphragm positioned below said top and spaced apart therefrom, means for introducing a temperature controlling medium into the space between said top and diaphragm whereby the temperature of said top is controlled, and means to deposit on said treating plate near the center thereof a liquid to be treated.
11. A device of the class described commeans to introduce a to supply liquid to said treating plate to receive prising tank the upper surface of the top of which. is arranged to constitute a treating plate, a collecting trough surrounding said treating liquid therefrom, said treating plate being mounted transverse to the axis of rotation of said tank, a diaphragm in said tank spaced apart from said top, means to introduce to the space between said diaphragm and top a heating medium, a sta tionary tank arranged to surround said first tank and support said collecting trough, a safety valve in said first tank operable at a predetermined pressurewithin said first tank the drip whereof is arranged to flow into said stationary tank, and means to revolve said first tank.

A device of the class described comprising a closed rotatable tank the upper surface of the top of which is aranged to constitute a treating plate provided with a plurality of concentric corrugations and a downturned outer edge, a collecting trough surrounding said tank to receive liquid from said treating plate, a stationary drip-collecting tank surrounding said first tank arranged to support said collecting trough, means to revolve said first tank, a dividing diaphragm in said rotatable tank, and means to introduce a temperature controlling medium into space between said diaphragm and top.

A device of the class described com prising a suitably supported shaft, means to rotate the upper end of said. shaft, a rotatable closed tank mounted on said shaft arranged to be moved in unison therewith within the confines of said stationary tank the upper surface of the top. of said rotatable tank being arranged to constitute a treating plate with a downturned outer edge, a collecting trough supported by said stationary tank to receive liquid from said treating plate, means to deposit on said treating plate near the center thereof a liquid to be treated, a diaphragmin said tank spaced apart from the top thereof, and means for introducing a tem perature controlling medium to the space between said diaphragm and top.

A device for the pasteurization of liquids comprising a closed rotatable tank the top of which is formed with a plurality of concentric corrugations arranged to constitute a treating plate, a diaphragmin said tank spaced apart from the top thereof to constitute a chamber, means for introducing to said chamber a temperature controlling medium, and means to rotate said tank.
