ROTARY ENGINE.
Application filed September 4, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANFORD WRIGHT VINCENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary engines and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a rotary engine of simple construction which will operate smoothly and which will economize on the use of steam.
Another object of the invention is to simplify the construction of this class of engines and to provide means for automatically opening and closing the valves to admit steam and to permit the same to exhaust alternately.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rotarycngine made in accordance with my invention.
' Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing for a more specific description of my invention, the numerals 1 designate the sides of the casing and 2 is the body portion of the casing to which the sides 1 are secured by.bolts 3. The body portion 2 is provided with a substantially cylindrical recess 4. Formed in the inner wall of the cylindrical portion 4 at equal distances apart are recesses 5 and pivoted at 6 in said recesses are the abutments 7, said abutments being moved into the cylindrical portion 4 by means of spiral springs S which bear at one end in a socket 9 in the inner wall of the recess 5 while the other end of said spring bears in a similar socket formed in the abutments 7, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3.

through the opposite side of the casing and is provided upon its end with a pivotally mounted tappet 15 connected to the end of the trunnion 14 and held in operative posi tion by means of a spring 16 which surrounds the trunnion 14 and is provided with a right angular end 17 which bears against the tappet 15 to hold it in proper position to normally dispose the valve 12 so that the steam inlet opening 10 is open to the cylinder 4. The piston 18 is provided with equidistant arms 19 which bear at their outer surfaces against the inner wall of the cylinder. The piston 18 is mounted upon a shaft 20 journaled in the sides 1 of the cylinder, said shaft having a pulley wheel 21 thereon at one side of the casing, and a wheel 22 at the opposite side of the casing. The wheel 22 carries a series of tappet arms 23, said tappet arms being secured to the periphery of the wheel 22 by bolts 24 and said arms being provided with outwardly extending lugs 25 adapted to come in contact with the tappets 15 at the required time to shift the valves 12 to close the steam inlet ports and open the exhaust ports.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows :Steam or other suitable power element entering the inlet ports 10 will fill the chambers a and will rotate the piston 18, the steam expanding in said chambers a against the abutments 7 and against the arms 19 of the piston. At suitable times the tappet arms 23 come into contact with the tappets 15 and shift the valves 12 to permit the steam to exhaust through the ports 11 as will be understood. After the tappet arms have passed the tappets, the latter are returned to the normal position by means of springs 16 and as the piston 18 revolves the arms 19 move the abutments 7 into the recesses 5 and after the arms have passed the abutment the springs 8 serve to throw the abutments inward to bear upon the outer surface of the piston 18, as will be understood.
From the foregoing it will be understood that an engine made in accordance with my invention is very simple in construction, is composed of few parts which can not readily get out of order and an engine made in accordance with my invention will work smoothly and efliciently without wasting steam or other power element.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A rotary engine comprising a casing, a piston rotating in said casing, yielding abutments in said casing, intersecting inlet and exhaust ports, valves pivoted at the intersection of said ports, tappets connected to said valves outside of the cylinder, and tappet arms carried by the piston shaft for moving the said tappets to shift said valves.
2. In a rotary engine, a casing, a piston mounted on a shaft extending through said casing, yielding abutments in said casing, intersecting inlet and exhaust ports, valves mounted at the intersection of said ports, tappets on said valves outside the casing, springs for normally holding said valves in position to admit steam to the casing and means for automatically shifting said valves to open the exhaust ports.
3. In a rotary engine, the combination of a leasing, a piston rotating therein, yielding abutments, intersecting inlet. and exhaust ports, valves pivoted at the intersection of said orts, means for holding said valves in position to admit steam to the cylinder, and means for alternately shifting said valves to permit the steam to exhaust.
