TAMAQUA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 88,208, dated March 23, 1869.
IMPRQVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OI IRON AND STEEL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
of 'Tamaqua, in the county of Schuylkill, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Mode or Method of Using Iron-Ore in Puddling Furnaces in the Manufacture of Wrought-Iron or Steel, whereby either iron or steel can be inanufitctured out of the same materials, and at the same heat, at the pleasure of the person manufacturing the same and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of our method of working the same. r
The nature of our discovery or invention consists in using an iron-ore known in the State of Pennsylvania as the Leader Hill iron-ore, which is mined in York county, Pennsylvania, or any other iron'ore containing the same ingredients, as a flux for removingimpurities from the iron, and converting cast -iron into steel, while in the puddling-furnaces; and
To enable others skilled in the art or engaged in the manufacture of iron and steel, to use our discovery or inventiom'we proceed to describe the method or manher of using the same.
The ore is placed or thrown into the furnace at the time of charging, and is melted and fused with the cast-iron and after the ore and cast-iron. are thoroughly melted and combined, then the damper is lowered until the mass commences to thicken. Then the damper is raised, and the mass is boiled, it having'been worked with the rubble from thetime the ore and cast-iron are melted and fused, and continually worked until the mass adheres, and is ready to be removed to the rollers.
In the manufacture of steel, the metal is removed from the furnace, put under the hammer or squeezer, and run through the rollers as soon as it can be made to adhere and form balls or masses; and, in the manufacture of iron, the metal is allowed to remain in the furnace until it becomes stronger in nature, thereby producing a superior quality of malleable merchant bar'-iron.
What we claim as our discovery or invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The using of the Leader Hill iron-ore, or any other iron-ore containing the same ingredients, as a flux, for the removing of impurities from the iron, and so neutralizing it, during the process of melting, and combining the ore with the cast-iron in the furnace, that the person working the furnace can, out of the same material, and at the same heat, produce a superior quality of steel or malleable wrought-iron at his pleasure.
