POWER-SHOVEL JACK-ARM AND MOUNTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 17, 1908.
Application filed October 24, 1907. Serial No. 398,969.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. EBBER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Power-Shovel Jack-Arm and Mounting, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holding and steadying a construction subjected to varying rocking strains.
This invention has utility when embodied in a power shovel, and more particularly to the deck engaging members and their cooperatlon with laterally extending arms, with the A-frame, with the boom step, with side bearings, center pin and draw bar.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of an embodiment of the invention in an excavator; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the excavator car body showing the steadying features and their combination; and Fig. 3 is a medial vertical section.
The dipper 1 is carried by directing member or handle 2 movable in boom 3. The boom is mounted in turn table 4 carried by step 5 on the forward end of car 6. Cable 7 is connected to operate the dipper 1. Guy 8 connects boom 3 with A-frame 9, while the A-frame is steadied by guys 10.
The legs of A-l'rame 9 are perforated and engaged by pins 11, which also extend through pairs of lugs 12 integral with the member 13. This member or deck bolster 13 has lugs 14 through which extend bolts 15 between the pairs ,of side sills 16 of the car body. These bolts 15 engage lugs 17 of bolster 18. The body bolster 18 and deck bolster 13 serve to embrace the car body or excavator deck.
At each end of the deck bolster 13 and integral therewith are lugs 19, 20, through which pins 21 engage ears 2 of one-piece jack arms 23.
At each end of the body bolster 18 and integral therewith are pairs of lugs 24,
through which pins 25 engage ears 26 of jack arms 23.
The deck bolster 13 is bolted to an extension 27 of the boom step 5. The boom step is hollow and through it operates the cable 7 over sheave 28.
As spacers for the bolsters 13, 18, and between the side sills 16 are spacing blocks 29. In line with these spacers 29 and to complete the sti'llening, is located intermediate spacer 30.
The lower bolster 18 has integral center pin socket extension 31 to engage bearing on truck bolster 33, its position to which is maintained by pin 32. O11 each side of extension 31, the bolster 18 has integral lugs 34 forming the rub irons or side bearings. Medially and on the forward side of bolster 18 are integral wings or lugs 36 to which the draw bar 37 may be attached. When not in use, the jack arms may be swung along side of car body, or be detached. Then the machine is set for digging, the jack arms 23 are swung out from. the car body, the ack screws 38 operated to hold the deck 1n a medial position against rocking and undue strains upon wheels 39 of the forward trucks as the shovel is swung to and fro in digging and dumping.
The setting of the jack screws 38, brings the upper or strut portion of 'ack arm 23 under compression, while the lower or more nearly horizontal tie portion is brought under tension. However, owing to the vertical brace member in these triangular arms, these compression and tension strains are modified.
The one-piece jack arm is rigid against any.
distortion. The jack arm ears 22, 26, are positively spaced from each other, and the stresses from jack screw to jack screw are distributed as in a beam. To further unify the features of the steadying construction, the pins 11 engaging in legs of A-frame 9, also engage in eyes of I-bolts extending through the bolsters 13, 18, so that the rock ing action from this source will not tend to pull the A-frame from the deck. To insure the relation which these bolsters 13, 18, should maintain in the power-shovel and its car, there are the several connections positively coacting. The boom step 5 is firmly bolted by extension 27 to deck bolster 13. The jack arms 23 and A-frame also engage this bolster, which in addition is bolted to deck and to bolster 18. Bolster 18 also coacts with jack arms 23, and through bolts 35 with A-frame 9, while center bearing 31 and side bearings 34 establish its position as to the trucks, and lugs 36 hold it in place as to the draw bar 37.
WVhat is claimed and it isdesired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A triangular one-piece jackarm having a recess the axis of which extends parallel to the lateral plane of the jackarm, a vehicle 1 body, and pivot pin means coacting with the body and the recess of the jackarm, said means so mounting the jackarm that it may swing laterally toward the body.
2. An excavator having deck and body bolsters, tie means directly holding the bolsters in position as to each other, and a swingable jackarm connected to each bolster.
3. An A-frame and a one-piece member having a plurality of seats for the A-frame whereby the member positively fixes the frame against working out of true and against undue vibration.
4. An excavator having an A-frame with two legs, a single bolster in which each of the A-frame legs is seated, and a pair of jackarms, there belng means integral wlth each 1 of the bolsters engaging each of the jack arms.
5. An excavator deck, a member on each side of the deck; and two jack-arms engag ing each of the members.
6.- An excavator deck having sills, a bolster on each side of the deck, and spacmeans for the bolsters and between the 7. An excavator having an A-frame, an excavator deck, a bolster on each side of the deck, an I-bolt engaging the bolster remote from the A-frame, and a pin engaging the A- frame and I-bolt.
8. An excavator having a jack-arm engaging bolster with integral side bearings, draw bar engaging means and a center bearing.
9. An excavator declvsteadying construction comprising deck embracing bolsters having integral lugs, and arms engaging lu s of each bolster and coacting to limit roc ing movement of the deck.
