To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HART F. PnAsE, of Bmoklyn, in the countyof Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam- Engines or Pumps, or Mode of Operating the Valves thereof, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specication, and in which- Figure `1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of a steam-cylinder, with its reciprocating piston and valve, under a horizontal arrangement of such parts, and as applicable to operating a pump, and
Figure 2, a plan of the same, with the valve-chest cover removed.

My Ainvention consists in the arrangement of devices for operating a slide-valve, to give the piston of a steamengine cylinder, whether as applied to working a directacting pump,or otherwise, its reciprocatingcharacter, by moving the valve, through direct action of the piston on it, in the same direction as the piston travelswhenever it is required to change its position in regard to the ports at the ends of the pistons strokes. This I ei'l'ect by the'arrangement of a valve, of double D-form, or other equivalent construction, withv the steam-ports which it controls, arranged inside of the exhaust-passages, the valve also being provided with legs, or stems, that project down into the cylinder through slots, which are covered in a close, or steam-tight manner, by the intermediate portions of the valve.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents the steam-cylinder, B, its reciprocating piston,`and C, the rod to the latter, said rod .being extended, as usual, through a stutiing-box at one end of the cylinder, for the purpose of communicating driving-power to any outside mechanism, and which may be done by a pitman set to rotate a crank, secured to a driving-shaft, or a reciprocating motion be obtained instead therefrom, as, for instance, in applying the invention to a direct-acting steam-pump,to which the improvement is particularly applicable, by, say, connecting the piston-rod direct to the plunger of the pumping-barrel.

The valve F is arranged loose, or free to slide on and along or over the bottom of the valve-chest, and is faced, so that it not only works in a close, or steamtght manner over the ports, or passages c-c and d d, but also over slots e c, leading down into the cylinder,

H H are legs, or stems, to the valve F, and arranged to project down the slots e e, into the cylinder A, near its ends, whereby the piston B, as it is reciprocated, is, on approaching the ends of its strokes, made to autoniatically operate` the valve in the same direction as the piston travels, and so, by the position of the ports, as described, to reverse the actionof the piston, the valve alternately admitting steam by the ports c c, and exhausting from the opposite side of the piston, by or through the passages d cl, accordingly as the stems l H are struck and moved by the piston.
The valve may be made with any suitable lap, and, if desired, of a gridiron-character, whereby a less amount of motion. will suice to throw the valve, which is operated by the steam actingiexpansively on the piston, when steam is c ut off from 'entering at its back, and momentum of the piston combined. Said valve may also, if preferred, be constructed so that a counteracting pressure is brought to bear upon its face, to balance the valve, as it were,v or reduce friction of it in moving over its seat. In this way, it will beseen that there is no complicated gear, or any outside. connection necessary to operate the valve, and that the latter, to reciprocate the piston, is moved inthe same, direction as the piston travels.
To elect change in the motion of the piston, at any intermediate point during the stroke of the latter, it is only necessary to shift the free, or independent valve, so as to reverse its position relatively to the ports c c and d d, by or through, say, a push-pin, M, projecting through either end of the valve-chest,' and which may be operated byhand from the 0utside.`
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The free, or independent valve F, ports, or passages c c and d d, slots e e, and val ve-stems H H, all arranged for operation of the valve by the piston, essentially as described.
