To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN Voss, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at N eumi'inster, Holstein, in Germany, have invented certain new and useful lmprove ments in Leather-Rolling Presses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to leather rolling presses.

A construction embodying the invention is shown in the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a machine pro vided with the device, partly in section, and Fig. 2 a plan view thereof.

The invention relates to a device for automatically lifting the platen of leather-rolling presses, distinguished from hitherto known devices for the same purpose by the fact that the abutments arranged in the ltnown devices at the sides of the machine to co-act with the reciprocating carriage for the purpose of lifting the platen with the aid of in termediate members or lin"s are dispensed with, and that a rotatable disk is mounted at the center of the upper longitudinal beam of the fixed frame, and connected to the platen by a system of levers so that by rotation of said disk the so-called platen can be uniformly lifted and lowered at both sides at the proper times.

The lifting of the platen is effected by means of ropes or chains 9 passing over pulleys b at the ends of the machine and alternately ulled by the reciprocating carriage a, one end of each. rope or chain being attached to the carriage and the other to the dis: 0. Levers d are connected to two diametrically opposed parts of the disk 0 and to togglelevers which are fulcrumed at the upper part of the frame and carry the platen c.

The chains g are of such length that they alternately become taut at the moment when the carriage a (or press-roller 10) has reached the one or other of the ends of the rolling path, or of the hide to be pressed, so that continued movement of the carriage beyond this point immediately causes the platen to be automatically lifted.

The action of the apparatus is as follows: When the leather to be pressed or the hide to receive a pattern has been laid in the known manner on the table located above the press roller and having an aperture of the same Specification of Letters Patent.

When the carriage has reached the end of the rolling path one of the chains 9 becomes taut, and the pull exerted by the continued movement of the carriage causes the disk 0 to be slightly rotated, so that the box 0 is uniformly and simultaneously lifted at both sides by reason of the reduction of the distance between the knuckles of the toggle-levers ff. hen the direction of travel of the carriage is reversed by reversing the direction of rotation of the wormspindle, the chain 9 which has caused the box to be lifted becomes slack again, so that the box descends by gravity and re mains lowered until a lifting action similar to that already described takes place at the opposite end of the machine. To prevent upward yielding or lifting of the box during the pressing operation, the toggle-levers f f must be straightened out during this operation. In order to produce or facilitate this straightening out of the said levers a weight Z is connected to the disk 0.

What I claim .as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is In a leather rolling press the combination with a frame, a platen and press-box, toggle levers carrying the press-box, a reciprocating carriage, a roller thereon, a rotatable disk mounted on the frame, and two chains each having one end attached to the reciprocating carriage and the other end attached to the circumference of the disk, the length of said chains being such that they'become alternately taut when the carriage or press roller reaches the ends of the rolling path.
