Description

E; BALL.
Plow.
No. 8,819. v Pa tented Mar. 23, is:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. BALL, OF GREENTOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO I. N. MOABEE.
PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,819, dated March 23, 1852.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. BALL, of Greentown, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of my improved plow, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same and Fig. 3 is a plan of a fragment of the beam and standard reversed.
In my improved plow the beam is connected with the acting members of the plow by an adjustable standard and bolt, by means of which the beam can be raised or lowered and its inclination in either a vertical or horizontal direction can be varied to suit the difierent cases which may occur in practice.
In the accompanying drawing the acting members of the plow, that is to say those by which the slice of earth is severed andturned over, and which consists mainly of the colter A, the share B, the mold board C, and the landside D, are firmly secured to each other so that they can all be moved simultaneously without affecting their relative positions. These acting members are connected with the beam E by means of a standard F and a bolt G.
The standard consists of two parts, the head and the body. The former of these is a Hate plate a which is fitted to the under side of the beam and is perforated at its front extremity to admit the bolt Gr. It is' also slotted at its hinder extremity to admit another bolt 0. The slot extends crosswise with the head and is curved to permit the beam E to be turned sidewise on the front bolt G as a center. The body of the standard consists of a flat plate 6 which depends from the under side of the head a and is perforated at its lower extremity with a. series of holes 6. This lower extremity is passed through an aperture formed in the upper portion of the land side casting and bears against the inner face thereof, as shown at Fig. 2. It is secured to this casting by a bolt 2' which is passed through one of the holes 6 and through a slot in the casting, as shown by the dotted lines. The aperture through which the standard is passed and the slot in the land side casting are of such shape as will permit the standard to be inland side. It is passed upward through the front bolt hole in the head of the standard F and through the beam E. It is also fitted with two nuts, the one f above and the other 9 below the beam, by means of which it can be secured to the beam in any desired posi tion.
The handles H H, by means of which the plow is directed, are attached directly to the plow castings so that they have no connection with the beam.
The plow thus constructed can be readily adjusted to the different cases which occur in practice. If for example the vertical inclination of the beam to the shoe of the plow, v
beam to be turned on the front bolt G as a center, after which the nut. is retightened, and if the vertical distance of the beam from top of the landside is to be varied the nuts f g of the front bolt are to be slackened and I the standard bolt 2' is withdrawn from that hole in the standard in which it is inserted. The beam can then be raised or lowered as required and can be made fast in its new position by reinserting the standard bolt through a new bolt hole and tightening the nuts f, g, of the front bolt.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Connecting the beam to the plow-irons by means of a pivot and staybolt G and adjustable standard F the whole being constructed and arranged as described so that the front end of the beam can be set toward either side, or either extremity raised or lowered without changing the height of the other, or both extremities raised simultane- Witnesses:
