Description
We in eases ITO-881,457. l ATENTED MAR.10, 1908.
' M. 0. BER'GSTROM PLOW.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 15, 1907.
MAGNUS O. BERGSTROM, OF CANTON, SOUTH DAKOTA.
PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 10, 1908.
Application filed August 15, 1907. Serial No. 388,646.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAGNUs BERG- 'STROM, a citizen of the United States, residmg at Canton, in the county of Lincoln and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in.Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to plows and consists in the constructionand arran ement of the parts which, will be more fulIy hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in.the claims.
One object of my invention is to provide a' plow in which the moldboard shall be so shaped and constructed that it will slip readily and easily through sticky soil.
A further object of my invention is to provide a moldboard which will operate successfully in stubble ground without clogging.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a plow which shall be light but strong and effective in operation.
These objects I attain in the structure shown in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application in which like parts are indicated by similar reference letters, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the plow showing the moldboard in bi-section with the rods set, at right angles. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of a part of the moldboard-with one of the rods secured therein. Fig. 4' is a like View showing the means of attaching the front rod. Fig. 5 is a-detailed view of a portion of one of the rods and the tenon attachment by which it is secured inthe moldboard.
Referring now to the drawings, A re resents the beam, and A, and A, the stan( ard and brace.
B and- B represent sections of the mold board, and B the share. The share B and the sectionsB and B, together constitute a sectional moldboard. By reason of the wedge shape of the section B, the parts B and B are advantageously combined therewith to form a continuous, raising and turning plane, for handling the furrow. The rods C, C, C, are secured to the upper edge of the wedge shaped plate B, said rods extending upwardly, rearwardly and curving outwardly so as to give the furrows the desired turn.
are of'unbraced by port d that This The landside I) and the share B usual' length and the part B is so the cross-arm D frog D and so great strength is secured to the p ows.
arrangement and construction of parts give an unusual shape' to the moldboard and permit the plow to slide readily through the soil, lifting the furrow easily up onto the rods where it is turned over 'by the bi-sectional inoldboard and delivered inuniforin and regular shape.
It is well known that in the western country particularly, headers are extensively used, leaving a very high stubble. The plow I here represent and describe is intended to low stubblefland, and'by reason of the ength of the rods forming part of the moldboard, to catch the highest part of such stubble and thoroughly turn the same under the furrow without clogging; Manyattempts have been made to accomplish this purpose, but, so far as I know, without successful results; I know by actual experience that this plow. will turn the stubble into the furrow and cover the same with soil.
One of the chief objections to the plows heretofore provided is their weight. I have sought to produce a plow which shall be light and strong and thus overcome the ob jection which has heretofore been made to other plows. This I think I have fully accomplished. While the plow is capable of performing all the service that any other plow has been made to perform, it is lighter in draft, easier managed by the plowman, and more effective in its work.
l-l'aving thus fully described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. In a plow, a moldboard .com rising a share, a wedge-shaped plate therea ove and secured thereto, spaced rods secured to the upper edge of said plate said rods extending upwardly, rcarwardly and curving outwardly,
substantially as described.
2. In a plow, the combination with a beam, standard and landside of a moldboard, comprising a share, a plate thereabove and secured thereto, rods secured to the upper edge of the p'iate, said rods extending upwardly, .rearwardly and curving outwardly, a frog secured to the moldboard and the landside and a cross-arm secured to-the frog and landside, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
MAGNUS O. BE'RGSTROM.
