Description
' iirmness, while the operator is making a solution ofthe ver RICHARD o ADLE, OF SHAWNEETOWN, ILLINOIS.A
Leners Patent No. 88,128, (mad Mfr/rch 23', 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLACKINGBOIES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe name g To all whom ,it may concern.-
Beit known that I, RICHARD CALLE, of Shawneetown, in the county of Gallatin, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Blacking-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of const-ruction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figures 1 and 2.0i' the drawings are sectional representations of the machine by which the improvement to the blacking-box is made;
gure 3 is the bottom of a blacking-box, improved; an
Figure 4 is a detail. lilly invention relates to boxes for holding blacking; an I It consists in constructing, or forming a series of spurs on the bottom of such box, for the purpose of causing it to sit firmly, while the blackiug is being removed with a brush.
These spurs are formed by a novel process, and my invention consists not only in the spurs themselves, but also in the means by which they are made.
The letter A of the drawings represents the bottom of a blacking-box, upon which the letters c are small, sharp spurs.`
When the box sits on a door, bench, or carpet, these spurs pass into the same, and hold the box with great blacking with a brush.
These spurs c are formed by 'the machine shown on figs. l and 2 of the drawings, operating as hereinafter mentioned.
Letter B represents the bottom 'of' my machine, and
C are two upright posts or standards erected thereon.
Letter el is a block, forming the segment of a circle, fastened on the platform or bottom, on one si'dc ofthe standards, and adapted to the size and shape of one side of afblacking-box. The inner sides of the standards C are out out in a circular form.
Upon the bottom, A, and between the standards, is a. circular block, or bed-piece, of the diameter of the box, in which I form small holes, as-'showu ou figs. 1 and 2, the number and size of which correspond to the number and size of the spurs I desire to form on the box-bottom. This block is marked D on thedrawings.
The letter E represents a circular block, constructed in form shown, and having on its lower side a series of spurs, corresponding in number and proportions to the spurs I desire to make in the bottom of the box. This last-mentioned block must be made a little less in diameter than the diameter of the blacking-box, and its upper side must be grooved, or otherwise adapted to iit the lower end of the ratchet-post next mentioned.
Letter F is a ratchet-post, adjusted as shown, upon a cross-bar extending from one standard, O, to the other, and within a tubular post, G..
The letter H represents a coiled spring, attached to the ratchet-post F in the manner shown and Letter L is a ratchet-lever, pivotcd in the tubular post G, the teeth oi which mesh with and operate the teeth of the post F.
To operate my device, I place the bottom of the box upon the block D, after removing the cover. I then move the lever L forward with a rapid movement. This forces the spurs of block E into the bottom of the box, and the points therein, with which they come in contact, are pressed downward into the openings in the block D, thereby forming the spurs upon the bottom, as shown in fig. 3 of the drawings.
Vhat I claim as luy-invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A blacking-box, constructed with spurs c on its bottom, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination and arrangement of the block E, with its spurs, as describochwitli the block D and standards C, when the same are constructed as speciiied, and operated by suitable power, for the purpose of forming the spurs c, on the bottom of the box.
vIn testimony tliatI claim the above, I=have hereunto subscribed my name, in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD GADLE.
Witnesses:
GEO. H. POTTER, BLUFORD WILsoN.
