Specification of Letters Patent.

This invention relates to door-fasteners of that general class shown and described in United States Letters Patent issued to me on the 25th day of October 1898, under No. 613013. f
The object of the invention is to generally improve and simplify the construction of the fastener and to provide improved-means for holding the pivoted locking latch in elevated or inoperative position preparatory to releasing the hasp.
Further ob'ects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure l is a perspective view of a door-fastener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the locking latch supported in elevated position, the upper or free end of the latch being broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of one end of the locking latch. Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved fastener comprises a hasp 5 pivotally mounted for universal movement on a staple 6, the latter being secured in any suitable manner to the adjacent face of the car-door 7. Secured to the door-frame or casing 8 is a securing plate 9 one end of which is bifurcated to form a pair of spaced lugs 10 between which is pivotally mounted for swinging movement a locking latch 11. EX- tending laterally from the lower end of the plate 9 is a lug or projection 12 which in connection with the plate 9 constitutes a keeper, said projection being provided with a locking recess 13 adapted to engage the walls of any one of a series of notches or recesses 14 formed in the lower edge of the hasp 5 as shown. The lug or projection 12 is formed with an elongated slot 15 through which is threaded one end of a wire 16 the opposite end of which engages an opening 17 in the notched edge of the hasp 5 and is provided with a terminal seal or other suitable fastening device 18.
That portion of the plate 9 between the Y spaced lugs 10 is inclined or beveled as indicated at 19 and pivotally mounted between said lugs is the reduced extension 20 of the latch4 11. The extension 20 is disposed at an angle to the longitudinal plane of the latch 11 and is formed with an elongated slot 21 adapted to receive a pivot pin 22, which latter also engages suitable openings formed in the lugs 1() of the securing plate. The eX- tension 20 is provided with a cam face 23 adapted to engage the inclined face 19 of the plate 9 when the latch is elevated thus supporting the latch in inoperative position and preventing accidental movement of the same when releasing the hasp preparatory to openingthe door;
When it is `desired to release the hasp the free end of thelatch 11 is swung upwardly to vertical position against the adjacent face of the car and in which positionit will move downwardly by gravity until the pin 22 engages one wall of the slot 21 and the cam face 23-en ages the inclined face 19 of the securing p ate thus preventing accidental movement of the latch While the hasp is being detached from the lug or pro'ection 12.
In order to release the atch it is merely necessary to exert an upward pull on the free end thereof which causes the opposite wall of the slot 21 to engage the pin 22 and at the same time causes the cam 23 to slide freely over the inclined face 19 until the curved wall 24 is disposed concentric with the pin 22 and in which osition the latch may be swung downwar y to operative position in engagement with the'hasp.
The latch 11 is formed with an elongated slot 25 for the reception of the lug or projection 12 and is also preferably provided with a laterally extending lug 26 adapted to enter an opening 27 in the plate 9 when the latch is moved to lowered or operative position.
In Fig'. 4 of the drawings there is illustrated a modified form of the invention princpally designed for use on swinging doors. In this form of the invention the lug 26 is dispensed with and the latch 11 locked in engagement with the hasp 5 by means of a pad-lock 28 the shank of which is threaded through an aperture 29 formed in the lug or projection 25', the device being otherwise the same as that shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Attention is called to the fact that by having the slotted connection between the latch and securing plate the former may be supported in elevated or inoperative position without the employment of lugs, catches and similar auxiliary fastening devices.
It will of course be understood that the fastener may be used with equally good results in connection with an ordinary pivoted or hand operated latch, the result accomplished being the same in both cases.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple, and inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
I-Iaving thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. In a device ofthe class described a plate provided with a lateral projection constituting a keeper, a hasp movable into engagement with the keeper, spaced lugs carried by the plate, a latch pivotally mounted beween the lugs and provided with an inclined slot for the reception of the pivot pin, and means co-acting with the exterior walls of the slot for supporting the latch in elevated position.
2. In a device of the class described a plate provided with a lateral projection constituting a keeper, a hasp adapted to engage the keeper, spaced lugs carried by the plate, a latch having a reduced extension provided with an inclined slot, a pin seated in said slot and engaging the lugs, and means co-acting with the exterior walls of the extension for supporting the latch in elevated aosition.
3. In a device of the class descri eda plate provided with a lateral projection constituting a keeper, a hasp adapted to engage the keeper, spaced lugs carried by the alate, a latch provided with an angularly disposed extension havin0r a cam face cooperating with the exterior walIs of the plate for su )porting the latch in elevated position, there eing an inclined slot formed in theangular extension, alnd a pin piercing the lugs and engaging the s ot.
4. In a device of the class described a keeper provided with spaced lugs and having that portion thereof between the lugs inclined or beveled, a hasp adapted to engage the keeper, a latch provided with a reduced extension having a cam face for engagement with the inclined face of the keeper, there being an inclined slot formed in the reduced extension of the latch, and a pin carried by the lugs and engaging the walls of the slot.
5. In a device of the class described, a keeper, a hasp adapted to engage the keeper, a latch pivotally mounted on the keeper and adapted to engage the hasp, said latch being provided with an inclined slot for the reception of the pivot pin, and means co-acting with the exterior walls of the slot for holding the latch in elevated position.
