LOCKING- DEVICE FOR MAIL-*CH'UTES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 1Q, 1905.
Application filed January 6, 1906, Serial No. 294324;. Renewed November 4:, 1907. Serial No. ceases.
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Josnrn WARREN OUT- LER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroeconstructed to extend through the floors of a I building to a collection receptacle for facilitating the collection of postal matter from a building, and the object of the present invention is to provide an improved locking device adapted to beapplied to a base section, or other part of the chute, whereby such part or parts may be locked in place under normal conditions, but which, when necessary, may be quickly unldbked and removed to render the interior or other portions of the chute accessible.
To these and other ends the invention. consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully explained, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 represents a vertical section through a portion of a chute and a base section, constructed in accordance with my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the upper and lower members respectively of the base section for the chute.
Similar parts in the several. views are desigiloor section and the adjacent parts of the ch te 1n the present embodiment y inven tion 1 designates a section of the chute above the llOOI 2, a bracket eel secured to J ',"i 1. i '.1. suitable caching e and provided t l suitable means for fastening the attaching flange 5 ohhaving an upward extension 12 having an apertured staple 13 projecting forwardly therefrom. The upper member 14 of the base section is adapted to be supported by the lower member and conforms generally to the outline of the frame, and it comprises a frame having a front and two sides, the rear thereof being open to enable it to be fitted against the chute while the latter is in position, the lower front edge of the upper memher being provided with one or'more projections 15 arranged to engage at the rear of the corresponding part of lower member 9. An aperture 16 is formed at the proper point in the front of the upper member to receive the forwardly-projecting staple 13 on the lower member, and as the projections 15 of theupper member are engaged with the lower member and the upper member is then tilted rearwardly against the vertical eXtension 12, the staple 13 will pass through the aperture 16 of the upper member and pro ject through to the front surface thereof, and by passing abolt or how of a lock 17 through the aperture of the staple, the upper memher will be firml locked to the lower member. As the lower ase member 9 is fixed po sition by securing devices 11 which are preferably located within the base, it will be impossible for unauthorized persons re move it, as it will be necessary UlllUCl-I remove the upper member iii-order l9 this, and as the floor section the c and also the securing devices for and adjacent sections of the if closed and concealed by base secti when its in locked position, a d as the loch is controlled by a key o l l A po protec rev tn (lb-Wally L "1 1 a I tamper i in ear lei ence M- a. "J y by un utnoria M means embodying my present invention is not only adapted to the base sections, but is also applicable to other parts of the chute, such for instance as the securing or supporting devices for holding or locking the chute sections inposition. to prevent their removal or opening, and the present invention provides efl'ective means for locking the chute and thus prevents unauthorized access thereto, as the staple or part adapted to receive the lock is secured by screws or equivalent securing devices which are concealed or inaccessible when the parts are in locked position, and hence all of the parts are under control of the look.
