Description

` Nor-881,100. PATENTED MAR. 3,4908.
H..LEA.
' yGAS PRODUCER. APPLIUTION FILED JULY 27.1905.
nouooooooooocooou INVENTO UNITED STATES 'PATENT oFFIoE HENRY I. LEA, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANI, ASSIGNOR TO THEWESTINGHOUSE MACHINE COMIANY, A vCORPORATION QF PENNSYLVANIA.
l GAS-PRODUCER.
To all whom 'Lt may concern:
' Be it known that I, HENRY I. LEA,'a citi-,- zen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg-in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. a new and'useful Improvement in Gas-Producers,
of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to gas'producersl I In the manufacture'ofpr'oducer gas the greatest difliculties s'ojfar encountered have been the maintenance of properconditions in the fuel bed and the attendant' diiliculty of properly'controlling the blast in its pas- Y sage therethrough.
The tendency of the blast isto pass through.' thegas generating chamber along the lines of least resistance and since with the ordinary' methods of charging the generating chamber, the interior or central portion of the fuel bed is themostcompact part, the blast tends to pass through the outer portion of the fuel bed adjacent tor the producer walls; again, the protecting hood with which the blast twyer is usually provided, tends lto cause' the blast tof'iiow'towards the walls of the producer and to be shunted around the central part of the fuel bed.
' the gas leaving the fuel bed has an unduly,y
hi hl content of CO2. To avoid these difficuties, I propose to so introduce the fuel into the gas generatin chamber that the minimum depth-'of fue bed will be `at, the center of the generating chamber and the greatest weight of fuel, andv conse uently the most compact portion of the fue bed', will be adjacent to the producer walls. By this arrangement the natural path of the gas will be from the blast twyer (because of the entering velocity of the-blast and because of the hood with which the blast twyer is provided), towards the walls of the chamberI and thensince its velocity is decreasedwalong the lines of least resistance back towards the cen-l Spe'cication of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 27,v 11905. Serial No. 271,413..
portion 4.
ter of the ffuel bed. Since, with .this construction, thev of least resistance for the vblast extends diagonally across-the fuel bed from the walls of the generating chamber towards its center, all Athe fuel enterin the chamber will pass at least once throug the blast'current. Y.
The object of this inventionis, therefore,
` the production of a gasproducer in which new and improved means are utilized for in- A troducing the fuel.
A further obj ect is the production of a conibined producer and auxiliary steam boiler Patented March 3, 1908.j f
in whichsimplicity of construction and ease.v j
of manipulation are characteristic features.'l
These and otherv objects I attain in an apparatus embodyingthe. features .herein described and illustrated.
f vI'n the single sheet drawing accomps'inying Athis applicatlon and forming apart thereof, a
vertical section of a gas producer embodying this invention is shown.
A gas producer comprising a as generating c amber 2 anda steam boi er 3 is provided with an inclosing shell 4, the lower portion of which extends into a water-basin5 constituting a Water s'eal for the chamber 2. An annular flange 6 issuitably connected to the shell portion 4 and supports a fire brick lining 7, with which' the chamber 2 is provided` Suitably arranged sight holes 8eX-.
tendingthroughthe lining 7, are provided with suitable covers 9.*` Poke holes 10 areY annularly arranged near lthe top of the chamber 2, and provided with suitable clos-V ing means 1 1. The fire brick lining adjacent to thepoke holes is cu't away as shown, and consequentl ymuch freedom in stirring the fuel bed 'is o tained, as a wedge-shaped opening permits the insertion of a crooked pokin bar. and various positions ma be obtaine which are impossible with a cy indrical opening -through the linin iA blast twyer l2, wiich is provided with a lsuitablehood 15, enters the lower portion of the chamber 2 and is connected to apassage 13, to which is connected a steam blower 14. A rotary grate 16 is provided with operating means 17 and is adapted to dischar e the ash into the water-basin 5. The steam oiler 3 is provided With a cast iron inclosing shell 19 which is supported by suitable brackets 20, riveted or otherwise connected to the shell The boiler 3 is also connected to a hood portion 21 whichis attached to the shell portion 4 by the iange connection 22.
' central chamber 23 inclosed by walls I241 'l inclosed between the walls 24 and 25 and 25, provide access into the passage 28.
I edge of the fire. The passage 28 around the boiler being filledwith green coal does away against heat radiation, and all the heat abi firing. The poke holes 38 are provided to aid the passage of the fuel throughthe pasarranged we 26.
fuel charging device 29 which connects The boiler 3 is provided with suitable steam which areconnected to the exterior walls 25 The hood portion- 2 1 is provided with a1 l of the hood i portion by a number of suitably s An annular or cone shaped passage 27 is connects with an annular passage 28 between the cast iron shell 19, surrounding the boiler,
and the exterior shell 4 of the produceizfMv Poke holes 38, suitably arranged in the walls The hood portion 21 is provided with a throu h an opening 30 withthe passage 27. T he c amber 23 incloses the upper ends of the boiler tubes 18 and is thereby connected with the-producer chamber2. A gas offtake port 31, withwhich the chamber 23 is provided, extends through the exterior wall 2-5- and is adapted. to be connected to gas cleaning apparatus or to gas consuming appliances. i
pipe 32 which connects vwith the blower 14 and to which is attached a'safety valve 34. The boiler is also provided with a suitably valved feed pipe v35, water-glass 36, and steamegage 37. Y
The charge of coal 'or other fuel is introduced into the passage 27 by the charging means 29 and'passing through the annular passage 28 enters the gas generating chamber l 2. By this arrangement the fuel bed in the I generatingchamber will be a minimum depth at the center, (as shown by the dotted line 39) the coal being deposited around the o'uter with' the necessity of boiler lagging as the body of descending coal acts as a guard sorbed by the coal is manifestly not lost. The shell 19 prevents the relatively cold fuel from comino in contact with the shell of the i boiler and the boiler is thus protected from i the changes in temperature due to irregular save 28.
ince the fuel7 lying next to the. lining and adjacent to the poke holeslO is not in the direct line of blast, it is relatively cold, and the thin lining utilized is therefore not objectionable.A A further advantage of this arrangement .is that the excessivelyfhot portionsof the fuel bed is at its interior and in i case of excessive heating and the formation j 'cure'by Letters Patent ispfj of clinlrers, such formation will occur in vthe center of the fuel bed and not at the side, where it may attach itself to the'briclr lining and seriously interfere with the successful operation of the producer. clinlier formedin the center of the fuelbed is gradually worked down and out of the producer f-.vithout seriously affecting the operation.. 'The constructionof this style of. producer is particularly cheap and its erection is very simple. The method of having the coal supplied to the periphery of the fuel bed will apply with equal advantage to producers designed foi' handling bituminous oranthracite coal with up-drafts and with sli ht modii ficationsand the elimination of. t- 'e vboiler may alsoqbe utilized with down-draft producers. 1 I
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to se- .lfln va gas producer, a-gasgenerating chamber, a superimposed steam generator,
gas passages extending therethrough, a hood provided with a gas oiftalre in closing .the ends of said gas passages and a fuel charging passage inclosing said hood and encircling 4 said steam generato@ adapted to introduce fuel adjacent .to the walls of said generating chamber., f .u
2. ln a gas producer, a gas generating chamber., a superimposed#steam"generator,"l Agas passages extending through said generator, means provided with a gas oiftalze -port inclosing the ends of said assages for collecting the gas delivered tierefrom, `a fuel charging device and a passage., surrounding said means and said generator for delivering fuel from said device'to said' gas generating A chamber. c, 4
In a gas .produ-cer, a gas generating chamber, a superimposed boiler, gas passages extending therethrough and communicating with said chamber, a collecting chamber com;
inunicating with the upper ends of; said gas "f passages and providedwith a`gas-delivery port, a fuel feeding device located above said collecting chamber and a passage around said chamber and said steam generator for delivering fuel from said device to said gas lgenerating chamber.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this'21st day of July 1905.
. HENRY IQLEA.
