AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. March 3, 1908.
Application filed March 28, 1907. Serial No. 365,155. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL T. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Magnolia, in the county, of Putnam, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains -to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in amusement devices, and it has particular reference to a manually operated roundabout.
The invention aims as a primary object to provide a novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the fOllO\ ing description, wherein reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a roundabout constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig.
' 3 is a detail plan view of a transmission gear between the operating lever and the main traction-wheel. Fig. 4 is a detail'plan view of the main traction-wheel and its driving connection. Fig. 5 is a detailed elevation of a U-shaped frame and its adjuncts forming a part of the present invention.
The invention in its practical embodiment comprises a radially-extending bar 1, pivoted at its inner end, as at 2, the pivot 2 being of the conventional form usually employed in the art. At its outer end the bar 1 has connection with a U-shaped supporting frame 3, the latter having the ends of its vertical bars fixed to a platform 4, from the rear end of which depend hangers 5, between the lower ends of which an axle 6 is mounted, the latter carrying a rear traction-wheel 7. The lower cross bar of the frame 3 is detachable and constitutes an axle 8, which is projected through the hub 9 of the main traction-wheel 10, disposed between said vertical bars and having formed integral with its hub 9, or fixed thereto, as the case may be, a sprocketwheel 11.
Centrally of the platform 4 are depending hangers 12, which are constructed to afford bearings for a transverse shaft 13, the latter carrying a fly-wheel 14 for increasing the momentum of the driving-gear, a pinion 15,
and a sprocket-wheel 16, the latter driving sprocket-wheel 11 by means of a connecting chain 17. Rearwardly of the hangers 12 are hangers 18 constructed to afford bearings for a transverse shaft 19, constructed with a crank-arm 20, and having a fixed pinion 21 in mesh with the pinion 15. The crank-arm 20 is loosely surrounded by the lower end of a pitman 22, which, at its upper end, carries a laterally-extending pin 23, which constitutes a pivot. To this end the pin 23 is journaled in the lower end of an operating lever 26, pivoted, as at 27, and in turn projected through a longitudinal slot 28 in the platform 4. Rearwardly of the lever 26 is a seat 29 of any suitable ornamental construc tion, and forwardly thereof isa pole 30 carrying any desired emblem 31, the pole and emblem being designed solely for the purpose of ornamentation.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The lever 26 is rocked on its-pivot 27 and its movement is transmitted to the pitman 22. Said pitman rotates the shaft 19 and the latter by virtue of the engagement of the pinions 21 and 15 drives the shaft 13. From the latter the main traction-wheel 10 is driven by means of the sprockets 16, 11, and the connecting chain 17.
From the foregoing description, it will be readily apparent that simple and eflicient means are provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of thisinvention as defined in the appended claims.
IVliat is claimed, is
A roundabout of the type set forth, comprising a radially extending bar pivoted at its inner end, a U-shaped frame fixed to the outer end of said bar, a platform connected with the side bars of said frame, the crossbar of said frame being detachable and constituting an axle, a main traction wheel provided on said axle, a sprocket wheel fixed to said main traction wheel, hangers depending said sprocket wheel.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
" PAUL T. JOHNSON.
