To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. COY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, in the county of Barton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawmill Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in work supporting devices for saw-mills.
In saw-mills for cutting logs into planks, the reciprocatory log carriage is usually provided with two head blocks which support the log or timber adjacent to its ends. When a long Hexible log is mounted upon such carriage' the central portion of the log usually sags and springs up and down to such an extent as to interfere with the proper operation of the saw.
The object of my invention is to overcome this difficulty and I accomplish the same by providing upon the stationary frame of the mill a supporting device adapted to engage the bottom of the log or timber and to support and steady the same as it is carried past the saw.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Y Figure 1 is a top plan view of a saw-mill showing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail vertical longitudinal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a detail vertical transverse section taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the saw-mill consisting of the tracks 2, the wheeled carriage 3 to travel on said track, log supporting head blocks 4 mounted on the carriage and having the slidable knees 5, and the stationary frame 6 upon which latter is suitably mounted the arbor 7, the circular saw 8 and other mechanism (not illustrated) for reciprocating the carriage 3. A saw guide 9 of the usual form is mounted upon the inner longitudinal beam 10 of the stationary frame 6 so as to steady the saw.
The present embodiment of my invention is in the form of an attachment which may be applied to a saw-mill of the ordinary type and it comprises a frame or support 11 which is preferably of right angular form in cross section and adapted to engage the beam 10 of the frame 6. The vertical portion 12 of the frame 11 engages one side of the beam 10 and may be secured thereto by bolts 13 or in any other suitable manner, and the horizontal portion 14 of said frame rests upon the upper edge of the beam 10 and is formed with a substantially central cut away` portion or recess 15 for the saw guide 9. This horizontal portion 14 may be also secured to the beam 10 if desired, and upon its -top are secured bearings 16, 17 for crank shafts 18, 19. The shafts 18, 19 are horizontally and transversely disposed and have upon their inner ends cranks 20, 21v which carry anti-friction supporting rollers, 22 23. The shaft 18 is so disposed with respect to the saw 7 that its roller 22 is located close to its outer face so as to engage and support the plank or board which is cut from the log or timber L. The roller 23 is considerably longer than the roller 22 and the shaft 19 is disposed in front of the edge of the saw so that said roller 23 will engage and support the log or timber L. The inner ends of the shafts 18, 19 are provided with crank arms 24 which are equal in length and pivotally connected to a rod or link 25 having one of its ends extended and pivoted to a curved foot lever 26 fulcrumed at 27 upon the beam 10. The foot lever is provided for the purpose of moving the supporting rollers 20, 23 upwardly into engagement with the bottom of the plank and the log and it will be seen upon reference to Fig. 2 that this can be 4done by depressing the foot piece upon` the free end of said lever. Said rollers are retracted, that is, drawn downwardly away from the plank and Vlog by means of a coil spring 28 which has one of its ends fixed to the frame and its other end connected to the crank arm 24 of the shaft 18. make the bearing 17 of the shaft 19 longitudif nally adjustable upon the frame`11 by forming in the top portion 14 .slots 29 to receive the clamping bolts 30, as shown in the drawings. When this is done, the connecting rod 25 is also formed with a series of apertures 31 so that the arm 24 of the shaft 19 may be adjustably connected to said rod. It will be seen that the device may be applied to either right or left hand saw-mills by changing the location of th(e foot lever, its pivot and the connecting ro From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention is especially adapted for use on saw-mills which cut long .logs or pieces of timber and that when applied to such a mill it will effectively support and steady the log or timber as it passes the saw.
Having ythus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: y
1. In a saw mill, means for supporting the work as it passes the saw, said means comprising two rollers to engage the bottom of the work and support the same, one of said rollers being arranged in front of and transversely with respect to the edge of the saw and the other being arranged to one side of the saw and in rear of its cutting edge, and means for projecting and retracting said rollers.
2. In a saw mill, means for supporting the work as it passes the saw, said means coinprising'two rollers to engage the bottom of the work and support the same, one of said rollersbeing arranged in front of and transversely with respect to the edge of the saw and the other being arranged toone side of the saw and in rear of its cutting edge, crank shafts for carrying said rollers, a lever for operating said crank shafts to project said rollers to an operative position and a spring for retracting said rollers.
3. In a saw mill, means for supporting the work as it passes the saw, said means comprising two rollers to engage the bottom of the work and support the same, one of said rollers being arranged in front of and transversely with respect to .the edge of the saw and the other being arranged to one side of the saw and in rear of its cutting edge, a support, bearings thereon, crank shafts carrying said rollers and journaled in said bearings, a link connecting said crank shafts, and a lever connected to said link.
4. In a saw mill, means for supporting they work as it passes the saw, said means comprising two rollers to engage the'bottom of the work and support the same, one of said rollers being arranged in front of and transversely with respect to the edge of the saw and the other being arranged to one side of the Isaw and in rear of its cutting edge, a support, bearings upon the latter, one of said bearings being adjustable toward and from the other, crank shafts carrying said rollers and journaled in said bearings, a link adjustably connecting said crank shafts, a lever attached to said link for operating said n crank shafts to project said rollers and a spring for retracting said rollers, substantially as set forth.
5. A work supporting device for saw-mills or the like, comprising a support, a pair of crank shafts thereon, work engaging rollers upon said crank shafts, a rod connecting said crank shafts for simultaneous operation, a lever for operating said rod to swing said crank shafts in one direction, a spring for actuating said crank shafts in the opposite direction and means for adjusting one of said crank shafts upon said su port and upon said connecting rod to enab e the rollers to be positioned with respect to the saw, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6.' A work support for saw-mills or the like comprising a support, a pair of crank shafts thereon and carrying work engaging and supporting elements, means for adjusting one of said crank shafts upon said su port toward and from the other, to enab e said elements to be positioned with respect to the saw and means for simultaneously operating said crank shafts substantially as and for the purpose specified.
