PNEUMATIC MOTOR FOR ADDING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
A Application led August 28. 1905. Serial No. 276.117.
'Tol all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES WALES, re-
ksidingat Detroit, in the county of Wayne Motors for Adding-Machines, of which the following is a specification, .reference being had therein lto the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improved actuating device for adding machines, and consists in the' construction of such an actuating device comprising a neumatic motor for operating the rock sha 't, a valve controlling said motor, means for opening said valve, and means controlled by the operated device for holding said valve Open a sui'licient time to complete the stroke, and then to close the same.
The invention further consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts as more fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l. is a vertical central cross sectionl throughthe Vcasing in whichis arranged the pneumatic motor, the controlling valves andthe pump', the section being through the same; Fig. 2 is a section on line -m of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one end of the actuating lever for the crank shaft, showing the means for holding the valveopen, so that the motor will complete its stroke, and for permitting it to be closed at the end of the stroke Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same parts, showing them in a different position.
A represents in diagram any suitable add-v ing machine, of whici B is the crank shaft and C the crank arm or lever by which the adding mechanism is actuated. In the ordinary use of this device, the operator sets the adding devices and then rocks the lever C back and forth for .the purpose of operating such device. My invention is the application of, a pneumatic motor for rocking this rock shaft, so that all the operator has to d0 is to tri a valve and the motor operates the crank shaft a single time and then stops.
To the rock shaft is attached a rock arm 1 (l which is connected by the link D to the lever 4E and this lever is connected by the link a-to the upper board l) of a bellows F which in this case forms the pneumatic motor for operatingv the crank shaft. Thisbellows or motor F, as shown in Fig. 1. 'posite the port d is the exhaust port 7L and Patented March 3, *1908.
motor is supplied with air from any suitable' i source and has supply and exhaust valves. I have shown in this application an electrical motor` G driving a crank shaft G which crank shaft operates the pumping bellows H of which I have shown three, operated from a single shaft and leading through the pas? sage I to a common discharge pipe I. At
'some point, the discharge pipe conduit from the air pumps is provlded witha .ster el bellows J which I have shown as norma y held in or towards its contracted position by the springs J thus giving a uniform tension or pressure to the air. I have also shown an inwardly-opening check-valve c in this bellows with its stem projecting outwardly, so that when the pressure becomes suflicient to iniiate the bellows to near its limit, it will strike a stop such as the side of the outer casing K of the machine and slightly open the valve so as to relieve the pressure, said check valve, together with the bellows, forming a motor regulator.
The a'ir passes. from the conduit I into the pressure chamber `L. In thisY pressure chamber is a port d leading to a passage e which in turn leads to the interior of the the valve c is adapted to be moved so as to oplen or close either the port or the ort h. T e valve is connectedto a stem 't w ich is connected'to the movable board of a small bellows pneumatic or what IA term a second-y ary motor 7c. This pneumatic c is in ythe chamber L and the pressure in that chamber will tend to ho d this pneumatic col'- lapsed. Leading from this pneumatic is a passage m having an inlet port mi from the air chamber L and this port is controlled by a valve n which also controls the exhaust porto. "p is the stem of the valve o which is connected to a bell crank lever M. Connected to this bell crank or to the valve stem isl a spring N tending to hold they valve down, so
as to close the port lm/ and open the exhaust port o in the normal position ofthe' parts.
iipnnected to the bell crank M is a connect'-l ing rodi() which at its outer end is connected to adpell-crank P and this in turn isconnected to the connecting rod Q having the fingerboard or presser Q at the up er end land arrangled conveniently beside t e key. board (not s own) ofthe adding machine. 0n the ply is cut 0E therefrom.
The parts bein thus constructed their operation is as fo lows z-The motor G will `pperat'e the pumps H and pump the air into e reservoir J, where it will be maintained at substantially uniform pressure therein andl in the chamber L. The pressure of the a1r 1n the chamber L will normally maintain the pneumatic c collapsed and will thus hold the valve c in its upper position in which position the exhaust Hort h is connected with the `interior of the be ows F and the air sup- To operate the operator presses down on Q', which through the bellrock shaft B, the the resser bar cran P, connecting rod O, bell-crank M and stem p, will move the valve n so as to open the port m and close the exhaust port 0. This Will admit air into the interior of the pneumatic 7c which will be panded and will shift the to establish communications between the chamber L and the passage e and at the same 4time close the exhaust .port 7i. This will ladmit air under pressure into the bellows F which will immediately be inflated, thereby rocking the lever E and drawing on the crank arm C and rocking the crank shaft B. Itis necessary to hold the valves in this position during the upward movement of the bellows board b so as to complete the stroke thereof and this I accomplish by the following mechanism: When the. operator presses on the presser bar Q', the connect- 1n rod O is moved horizontall so that the ro ler wrist S is moyed behindy the path of the flange R. As soon -as the motor starts to rock the lever E, the llange R is moved in front of the roller wrist and thusthe valves are maintained in this position until the lever has traveled the entire length of the flange R. As soon as the flange passes below, the roller wrist S, the s ring N will be free-to act and Will rock the ell cranks and the connecting rod O so that the roller wrist S is projected in front of the flange R, thus reversing the position of the valves n and 4c from that described to that show'h in Fig. 1; The valve n is closed by the spring N and the exhaust port o simultaneously opened so that the air in the chamber L will colla se the pneumatic 7c and thus will shift the va ve cto close the air inlet port to the motor and o en the exhaust port h. At the same time v t e weightof the movable board of the bellows motor (or a spring if desired) will rock the shaft back to its initial position.
The device thus constructed is simple and cheap to manufacture, is .exceedingly vrapid in its operations, and with such a device all the operator has to do is to set the adding mechanism bythe ordinary keys and then immediately exvalve c so as touch the resser bar Q', when the motor will rock. the s aft B the same as it would if operated by hand, and when it hasfbeen given a vsingle actuation, the motor stops.l The presser barvQ with its connected mechanism is simply a tripping device or a tripper for shifting the controlling valve and the valves are then controlled by the actuated mechan- J ism. While l have shown a specific form of this controlling and actuating device, it is obvious that many changs ma be made in the details, without necessari y departing from the spirit of my invention.
