FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM'E. LUHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Port Chester, in the county of Vvvestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ,Fire- Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
vThis invention relates to an improved fire-extinguisher which is charged with water and discharged with a carbonate .solution and which` is provided with an acid-bottle the conten'tsof which' are supplied at thev time the extinguisher is required'for use.
In fire-extinguishers of' this class heretofore in use it 'was customary to break the bottle containing the sulfuric. or other acid by means ofpressure applied to the bottle. This required the replacing of the bottl after every use of the fire-extinguisher. This was annoying, inconvenient and ex ensive.

By shaking the receiver the mixture takes place quickly and the gas generatedlcreates a sufficient pressure in the upper part of the receiver for forcing the water through the now opened-valve into thehose and through the hose and nozzle. w
When all the water is dis'charged the re ceiver is opened again by removing the cover, the holder for the acid-bottle removed and the latter charged With acid. The receiver is then recharged With a liquid saturated With a gas generated by carbonic or other acid, after which the acid-bottie is replaced in position and the cover tightly closed on the same, the holderbeing sup orted on the shoulder by its contact With t e cover b. Before the holder is dropped into position the Operating handle is returned into upper position against conta et with the upper sto -pin h* by which the recess of the ke k is p aoed in line With the boss of the acidottle, so that the same is placed 'in position in the recess, While the valve is moved into closedposition so as to prevent any escape of gas. vWhen the extinguisher is again required for use the same operation of opening the valve and discharging the contents of' the acid-bottle is repeated.
My improved fire-extinguisher has the following advantages: First, that the acid-bottle, notv being broken as heretofore, can be used again after each use of the extinguisher second, that the operation of the extinguisher is easily comprehendcd, consistmg merelv in the turning of the valve-lever from one position to the other and back again; and, third,
that` the recharging can be accompiished by any one With great facility.
Having thus described niy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: p
1`. In a fire-extinguisher, the combination of a receiver, an acid-bottle mounted therein 'to turn on its aXis and thereby discharge its lcontents, an Outlet-valve for the receiver,
means for Operating said valve, and a direct positive connectionbetween said bottle and said Outlet-valve whereby they are turned simultaneously.
2. In a fire-extinguisher, the combination of a receiver, an acid-bottle rotatably supported therein, a rotary Outlet-valve for the receiver, means for Operating said'valve, and a key connecting the valve with the acidbottle.
3. In a fire-extinguisher, the combination of a receiver, an acid-bottle rotatably and removably mounted ,therein 'and ,having a boss at one end, a rotary Outlet-valve for the receiver, means for Operating the same, and a -key extending from the body of said valve and engagingsaid boss.
4. In a fire-extinguisher, the combination of a bottle-supporting frame, a shell fixed in said frame and having a split lower portion, and a bottle mounted in said shell to turn t-herein andhaving an outlet to register with said split. portion.
5. The combination, with the receiver, of a frame supported therein,a shell fixed in said frame but freely removable therefrom, an acid-bottle mounted to turn in' said shell, and means operable from the exterior of the receiver for turning said bottle.
6. The combination, with the receiver, of'a frame mounted therein, circular rims carried at each end of said frame and provided with stops, a cylindrical shell supported in said rims and having a split portion fitting over said stops, an acid-bottle mounted to turn in said shell`and having an opening to register lwith said split portion, and means for turning said acid-bottle. 4
