To all whom it may concern:
` Be it known an 1, wmmn n. MANLEY', of are city, county, and Statev of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feather-ing Paddle- Wheels for steamshipsyand that the following .is a full, clear, and exact description and specification. of my invention.
The object of my invention is to enable the featherving, or 'coutrollingmechanism of the paddles of the wheel to adapt itself to the movements of the paddlewheel and its shaft, -so as to maintain its proper relationto 'the paddles, vhowever much the paddle-wheel and its shaftmay vary their positions by the strainingA of the ship in a sea-way or otherwise. To this end,

The arms-A A of the paddle-wheel 'are secured to hubs B B, inthe usual manner, and the hubs B B are mounted upon and secured to the paddle-wheel shaft O.
Each paddle, or paddle-board D, is secured to a rockshaft, E, which is' constructed to rockin boxes G G, se-
lOne end of each rock-shaft E is itted with a crank, F, and the crank-pins a a of the whole series of rockshaft cranks F are connected withthe arms I-of the controlling-frame J.'
The arms of the controlling-frame are secured, at their inner ends, to aring-hub, K, which is fitted to turn upon the eccentric M, which, by its eccentricity to the paddle-wheel shaft C, causes the arms I of the controlling-name to rock the rock-shafts E of thepaddleboards, as the wheel revolves, and the controlling-frame revolves with it.
The eccentricM is mounted upon thepaddle-Wheel shaft O,whicl1 turns in a bearing, or box w, in said eci centric.
The eccentric is also -ittedwith an arm, N, whose vouter end is connected with the side of the shipby means of a link, P, pivoted at one end to a plate, Q, that is bolted to the side of the ship, and pivoted at the other end to the eccentric-arm N.
As the arm N arid link P, thus arranged, constitute aexible connection with', the side of the ship, the eccentric may move radially inany direction with the paddle-shaft on Whichit is mounted, but is prevented from turning; hence the controlling-frame is forced to maintain its relation to the paddles, by reason of its being mounted upon the paddle-shaft, and, on the other hand, it is prevented from turning, and yet permitted to movelaterally with the said shaft, by reason of the v flexible connection'- hetween the-'eccentricandY the ship.v
AHaving' thus described one of the vmodes in which I have applied the 'principle of my invention, I declare that I do not limit my invention to that mode, as the construction ofthe wheeland controlling-mechanism may be greatly varied, Without changing the invention.
Thus, for example, the `construction of the flexible connectiony betweenthe eccentric M and the ship may he.
changed, 'b'y,forming the arm `N with'a slot in itsend, (as representedl in blue lines, in fig. 2,) and by applying a-pin, (also represented in bluelines,) tothe ships side, yso that the end of the arm may 'play upon said pin as the'eccentric moves radially with the paddle-Wheell shaft, while the pin prevents the eccentric from turning with the said shaft.
I prefer to apply the eccentric and controlling-frame to the inner side of the paddle-wheel, or that next the ship; but it may beapplied to the outer side thereof,
and the'iiexible connection' may take hold of the guard of the wheel, and be connected with the ship through it.
What I claim'as my invention, and desire to secure hy'Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination of the eccentric of the controlling-frame of the paddles of va feathering paddle-Wheel with the paddleshaft, and with the ship,
in such manner that said eccentric is both supported upon the paddle-shaft and connected with the ship, by
