Be it known that I, THOMAS OWEN BATES,
a Subj ect 'of the King of England, residing at Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, Eng-Q land, ave invented new anduseullrn rovernents in Machinery for Making Cup'-- afers, Sugar-Wafer Biscuits, andthe Like, of which the following'is a specification.
This invention has reference to machinery for making sugar cup Wafersof various shapes sugar wafer biscuits, and the like of the kind in which the material is cooked between two f plates hinged together and athiptedv to be moved in relation to each other about\such hinge -When charging the material to be cooked, and removing the cooked articles, and it has for its object to provide im rovements hereinafter described, by whic this type of article, and more especially cups, can be made expeditiously, economically, and of good quality and class.
The invention will be described with the aid of the accompanying drawings, which illustrate it; and the novel characteristics under it are set out in the claiming clauses concludinor the specification. A

Referring to the drawings, according to this invention, the matrices 2 in which the cups aremade, are provided on the plate 1; and this plate has hinged to it, at an( by the hinge 9, a plate 10, ofwhich 12 are the hinge cheeks fitting one on either side of the hinged boss 3 of the plate 1. The plate 1.0 contains the dies or inner formers '11, which form the cores to the articles beine' made.
The upper and lower plates 10 and 1 have at the front and back, projecting-parts at 13, 13, which form trunnions, which rest in the front and back plates of the box or casing 17 of the machine; the edges of these plates being gapped out to receive the trunnions, and form bearings for same, upon which the whole device is adapted to revolve.
-The whole of the movable parts, that is, the upper and lower plates 10, 1 are balanced by weighted levers 1S, mounted on two hinge pins 19, mounted in bearings'20, the axes of which are normally coincident with the axis of the hinged in oi the hinge 9, connecting the upper andlbwer plates; andthese levers are connected to the front end of 'the plates by a bar 21 which is in the forni of a fork at coupled up with, the hinge pins 19 of the wei hted levers 18; while the other partis in t e form' of a bridge, bar extending over the plates to the front portion, to which it is connected by a link 22, to one oi the mani ulatingprongs, 14, of the u per plate 10; t e lower prong 6 being cou lied to the upper the back, the two ends ofthe fork being prong 14 by a ring 7, Whic slips onto and of? its end as and when desired. The link 22, at its lower end, is provided with an eye, which forms a bearing to the rong 14; and the link pro er itself is disposedD at one side of this eye, ass iown in Fig. 4.
When the'two platesl and 10 are disconnected, which is'eected' by moving the ring 7 ot'the end of the prong 14, and the-upper late 10 is .free to. nieve upward u on the inge 9, it will be balanced by the weights 18,

plate will be held up in such position by the weights thereby enabling the contents, that y is, t e cups of biscuits, etc. to be moved from the matrices 2, and fresh batter supplied to them.
The lower prong 6 is hinged at 8 in the plate 1 at a point near its connection with same, as shown; and has a short extension inwards of the hinge 8, b which means, when the two prongs are re eased from each other, by taking ofi' the ring 7; and the lower one 6 is pressed down, the upper plate 10 will be forced a slight distance up, and completely separated from the lower late, thus obviatiiig diiiciilties in dividing t rese plates which sometimes happens, due to the vacuum between them.

The amount of movements of the stripper plate 15,-which is-supportedand its movement limited by the set screws 16-to effect this starting or stri ping action, need be very small, and it nee be only actuated from one end or part; and this i's'done, referably, automatically, on the opening o the upper plate or lid 10, by a device connected with it, which, when the upper plate or lid is raised, acts on the stripper plate, andA moves it away from such upper plate 10. The device shown in the drawing for effecting this, is convenient and simple, and consists of` a species of trigger or lever 23, hinged at 24.-' to the plate 10, having the front end lying over the stripper plate 15, and the other over a projection or cam-shaped device 4 on the end of the boss 3, which, when the plate 10 is moved up olf the )late 1` and revolves about the lungo 9, will obstruct this trigger 23 and cause its'front end to be depressed; and this end being connected with pins 25 provided on the late 15, will press it down, and away from t e plate 10. 0f course this action'vwill be arranged to take place at the re uired moment.

In this action, it will be seen that in turning'it-the apparatusso that the matrices 1 come upper most, the prong 6 can lie above the prong 14, by reason of the link 22 being to one side of the vertical plane of same, as shown in Fig. 4'.'
What 1s claimed is z* 1. In machinery for making cu sugar wafers, biscuits, and the lates between which the material is cooked linged together at oner end, trunnions on which said balance weig t lever having a hinge separate from that of the plates, but coincident -with wafers,
