CAR-STAKE Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THADDEUS ELLIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of ashington, have invented a new and Improved Car-Stake, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to car stakes such as used on logging cars to prevent the logs from rolling off the sides of the car.
The object of the invention is to produce a car stake which will constitute a good substitute for the wooden stakes now employed, and which can be readily brought into oper ative position or depressed from this position when the logs are to be loaded in the car.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in Which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section through a car loaded with logs and provided with car stakes constructed according to this invention; in this view the car wheels and axle are indicated, but the supports for the car body are omitted; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross section through the car stake, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the body of the car, to the sides 2 of which the car stakes 3 are attached. These car stakes are mounted in pockets 4 of'the usual construction, and these pockets are simply castings, presenting rectangular or square openings having a vertical axis and tapering slightly toward the lower portion of the pocket. They are held in position by bolts 5 which pass through the side of the car as shown. is provided, which is'divided into two sections; at the meeting faces of these sections a threaded bore 7 is formed which extends in a vertical direction from the upper to the lower face of the box. In this threaded bore a threaded spindle or screw 8 or stake proper, is mounted. To the lower end of the spindle 8 a stem 9 is pivotally attached at 10, and this stem carries at its lower extremity a hand wheel 11. The bolts 5 are extended at their inner extremities so as to support a hook 12 which hangs down at the inner side In each of the pockets 4 a box 6 of the car. This hook 12 is held in place by a suitable collar 13 and a split pin 14. When the logs 15 are to be placed on the car, the spindles or screws 8 are rotated to withdraw them downwardly below the level of the car floor. The logs may be then readily rolled across the edge of the car body and against the stakes at the other side of the car, which will be screwed up so that they project a considerable height above the car floor. When the logs are loaded upon the car, the stakes on both sides of the car will be in the position shown at the right in Fig. 1. In order to bring the stems 9 out of the way when the car is running upon the railway, these stems will be folded in, as indicated at the right in Fig. 1, and will be hung upon the hooks 12. It should be understood that there will be as many as desired of these stakes alongeach side of the car, and that they will be placed opposite to each other in the usual manner.
The boxes 6 are made in two halves, as shown, so as to facilitate the making of any repairs to the thread, as evidently the box may be taken out and the sections separated, so as to expose the bore for the application of a chisel or a similar tool.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A pocket adapted to be attached to the side of a car, a depressible car-stake sliding longitudinally in said pocket and having an operating stem attached thereto adapted to fold under the car.
2. A depressible car stake comprising a screw adapted to become depressed through the car floor, and a stem jointed to said stake adapted to rotate the same, said stem being adapted to fold into an inoperative position.
3. A depressible car stake comprising a screw, a box having a threaded bore receiving said screw, a stem pivotally attached to said screw and adapted to fold under the car and carrying a hand wheel for rotating the same, and means for supporting said stem under the car.
