  • lClectrodcposi-ted metal does not generally afford sufficient protection against chemical influences, because, unless extremely thick, it contains innumerable fine pores, through which the metal to be protected can be at tacked. In many cases chemical action is assisted by deeompesinglocal electric currents, which circulate between the base metal and the electrodeposit when moist. In order to afford an effective protection of the base metal, the pores in the electrodeposit must therefore be closed.
  • This is elfected according to the present invention by first coatin -by any suitable process such as electroplating or dippin'gthe metal to beelectroplated, with a metal or alloy having a lower melting point than the final eleetrodeposit, whereupon it is provided I with the electrodeposit, and, after drying and cleaning the surface, is then subjected to a t-en'iperature higher than the melting point of the intermediate coating.
  • This coating accordingly melts, and becomes intimately united with both the base metal and electrodeposit, simultaneously filling out the pores base metal and electrodeposit.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY SCHMIDT, a subject of the Kingof Prussia, residing at Cologne-on-the-Rhine, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Processes for Producing Poreless and Well-Adhering Electrodeposits, of which the following is a specification.
lClectrodcposi-ted metal does not generally afford sufficient protection against chemical influences, because, unless extremely thick, it contains innumerable fine pores, through which the metal to be protected can be at tacked. In many cases chemical action is assisted by deeompesinglocal electric currents, which circulate between the base metal and the electrodeposit when moist. What 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is2- The process for producing poreless and well adhering electredeposits, which consists in first providing the metal to be electroplated with a coating of a metal or alloy which melts at a lower temperature than the final electrodeposit, in then electrolytically depositing the final coating, and in melting the intermediate coating, substantially as, and for the purpose, set forth. 7
