Application and March 22.1906.- Serial No. 307.460.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. DAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic-Fluid Turpines, of which the following is a specifica- 1on. I
This invention relates to improvements in elastic fluid turbines, the im rovements relating to the turbine itself rat er than to the casing or nozzles and guide assages.
t a construction of tur the high temperature at which the steamthe usual elastic fluidis delivered, therim of the turbine is unduly expanded. beyond the central part, and consequently induces unnecessary strain at the periphery, and sometimes a tendency to warp. The strain of the expansion is also objectionable because of the increasing strain due to the oen trifugal force occasioned b the high speed of the rotation usual in sucli engines.
The object of this invention is to provide a construction of turbine for use in such elastic fluid turbine engines, that shall obviate this difficulty.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
he invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accomanying drawin forniinga part of this speciation, inwhici- Figure 1 shows an enlarged detail of a bucket section in place. one turbine disk, the sectional part bemg taken one line corresponding to line :0 w of Fig. 2. Fig 2 is a transverse sectional view through the rim of the turbine and the buckets thereon. Fig. 3
is a side elevation view of a. complete turbine wheel with the buckets in place.
In the drawing, similar numerals of'reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the numbered parts of the drawing, the bucket sections 1 contain buckets2 of the usual recurved type.' These sections 1 are secured to the opposite sides of the disk 5 by means of bolts 3.
The periphery of the disk 5 is formed in shape in cross-section, with a broad portion towards the periphery and ines, owing to circumferential shoulders atthe narrow The shanks 4 there by means of the boltsB. Au'o 7 is at the center for ashaft, and screw holes fibsirefprovided for bolting the disk to a suit ange on said shaft. The segments l.' Y I are similar to each other and are arranged there being an open opposite each other,
of the segments 1 to space between the 811%? permit expansion, in t illustrated. There are illustrated. The space between the segments may be left entirely open as illus' desire to remark that the particular form of securing the bucketsis oif particular it permits of the free ex advantage because per direction; but the pension in the pr eature of dividing t merits in this way is of means of attachment to the dis Having thus described. my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. ln' an elastic fluid turbine, the combiments 11 thereon, secur o the (periphery of the said disk which is formed ovetalled nation of the disk 5; opgositelydaced segto receive the same by suitable bolts therethrough, the said segmentsbeing separated from each other at their ends, and elastic in' sulating material arranged between said segiments, co-acting for the purpose SPGCl-r e 2. In an elastic fluid turbine engine, the combination with the turbine disk of bucket segments secured to the periphery'thereof, which segments are separated from each other in relation to permit ofindependent expansion ofthe segments, and elastic insulating material arranged between said segl ments, coacting as specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and 'seal in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. DAKE. I Witnesses:
' FRED L. CHAPPEILL,
CLARA A. Seam.
art. of each of the segments 1, w liich" fit into these shoulders, are securely clamped;
' p'ening This feature e buckets up into seg-- advantagp with other e preferred form here twelve segments oneach face of the disk in this structure here.
