Be it known that I, GEORGE H. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in printing presses, and the object is to ovide a printing press particularly adapte for use in the printing and especially the numbering of tickets, tags, and the like so constructed and arranged as to be easily and quickly adjusted for a wide range of differing conditions and at the same time simple, ac cessible, and compact and capable of being operated at a high rate of speed.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts setforth-in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.

I prefer to have part of the holders 47 provided with a squared portion 49 and part without. Each of the numbering machines 46 is provided, respectively, with a nut 50 having screw-threaded engagement with the shank 48.
In the case of the shank 48 provided with a squared portion 49, the nut 50 may be rotated in the proper direction to permit said squared portion to be disengaged from the slot 41, thereby permitting the holder 47 to be rotated on the axis of its shank 48. When placed in its proper position, the holder 47 may be clamped to the plate 40 by rotating the nut 50 in the proper direction, it being understood that the squared portion 49 makes it unnecessary to carefully adjust the holder 47 as regards the rotary adjustment of said holder. In the case of the shank 48 being cylindrical as shown in Fig. 4, the nut 50 ,may be loosened and the holder 47 may then be rotated on the axis of its shank 48 until said holder bears any desired angular relation to the plate 40.

Each of the numbering machines 46 is provided, respectively, with a plunger 51 slidably mounted within the shank 48. A compression spring 52 bears at its upper end against a plug 53 and at its lower end against a pin 54, said pin being located in'slots 55, 55 formed in the plunger 51, said slots and said pin being adapted to limit the movement of the plunger 51. Two links 56, 56 are pivotally connected at their upper ends to a pin 57 which passes through the plunger 51, said links being pivotall connected at their lower ends to two oscilfatory pawl carriers 145, 145 by a pin 146, there being a multiple pawl 58 interposed between said pawl carriers and pivotally mounted on said pin. A plurality of rotary type wheels 59 are mounted in the type wheel holder 47 and are adapted to be rotated by a multiple pawl 58 in a well known manner to print consecutive numbers the features of the pawl 58 and type wheels 59 being patented and I do not claim any of said features. A plurality of rotary type wheels 59 are rotatably mounted in the type-wheel holder 47.
A plate 60 forming a part of the frame provided with a slot 61 corresponding to the s1ot 41 of the plate 40. A plurality of stopscrews 62 are located in the slot 61 and may be adjusted longitudinally thereof by loosening the nuts 63., The stop-screws 62 may also be adjusted toward and away from the plungers 51. As the form-carrier 35 is reciprocated by the mechanism hereinbefore described operatively connected therewith, the plungers 51 during each u ward movement of said form-carrier stri e the stopserews 62, thereby causing the holders 47 to be moved upwardly with relation to the plungers 51, consequently rotating the type wheels 59. On the next downward movement of the form carrier 35, the springs 52 return the plungers 51, the links 56, and the pawl 58 to their normal or starting position. A platen 64 secured to the frame 17 is provided with a suitable pad 65 held thereon by means of a clamp 66. Two guides 67, 67 are mounted on a rod 68, said rod being mounted on the frame 17.
The guides 67, 67 are adapted to guide a strip of paper 69 across the upper side of the pad 65, sald strip of paper having an intermittent feed movement imparted thereto by any suitable means, not shown. The spring 81 is adapted to yield and permit the form carrier 35 to continue its upward movement after the ductor-roll 75 has come into contact with the fountain-roll 71, thereby causing said ductor-roll to dwell upon the fountain-roll 71 a short period of time during which time said fountain-roll is rotated as hereinafter described.

A ratchet 86 is fast to the shaft 72, while a pawl carrier 87 is rotatably mounted on said shaft. A pawl 88 pivotally mounted on the pawl-carrier 87'is held in contact with the ratchet 86 by means of a spring 89 fast at one end to said pawl and at the other end to said pawl-carrier. A block 90 is pivotally mounted on the pawl-carrier 87. A link 91 pivotally connected at its lower end to the crank-pin 85 is slidably mounted in the block 90 and has two collars 92 and 93 adjustably mounted thereon, said collars being adapted to alternately strike the block 90 and thereby rock the pawl-carrier 87 on the shaft 72 thus imparting to the ratchet 86, the shaft 72, and the fountainroll 71 an intermittent rotary movement.
The collars 92 and 93 may be adjusted on the link 91 to vary the amount of feed of the fountain roll 71 for each rotation of the shaft 82. A sprocket-wheel 94 fast to the shaft 82 is operatively connected to a second sprocketwheel 95 by means of a chain 96. The

said sprocket-wheel and said gear being rotatably mounted on a stationary stud 98 fast to the frame 17. The gear 97 meshes into a pinion 99 fast to the shaft 74, said pinion being of substantially double the width or face of the gear 97. A collar 100 rovided with an annular groove 101 is also fast to the shaft 74. A crank-disk 102 is provided with a crank-pin 103 located in the annular groove 101. The crank-disk 102 is fast to a shaft 104 journaled in a bracket 105, said shaft having fast thereto at its upper end a ratchet 106. A slide 107 is slidably mounted on the frame 17, said slide having pivoted thereon a pawl 108, said pawl being held in operative engagement with the ratchet 106 by means of a spring 109. slide 107 is provided with a slot 110 in which is located the squared portion 111 of the stud 37.
As the -forIr.-carrier 35 moves up and down, the squared portion 111 of the stud 37 plays in the slot 110, thereby imparting to the slide 107 a horizontal reclprocatory movement, thereby causing the pawl 108 to impart to the ratchet 106-an intermittent rotary movement. The sprocket-wheel 114 is fast to the shaft 82. Two sprocket-wheels 119- and 120 are journaled on studs 121 and 122, respectively, said studs being adjustably mounted on brackets 123 and 124, respectively. Two sprocket- wheels 125 and 126 are rotatably mounted on studs 127 and 128, respectively, said studs being adjustably mounted on brackets 129 and 130, respectively. Two sprocket- wheels 131 and 132 are rotatably mounted on the frame 17. A chain 133 passes partway around the sprocket-wheel 117, partway around the s r0cket-wheel 125, partway around the sprocxet-wheel 131, and
artway around the sprocket-wheel 119.

In other words, the periphery of the ink-distributionroll 73 moves in a direction opposite to that of the chains 133 and 134. Two ink-carrier rolls 135 and 136 are rotatably mounted on the chains 133 and 134 and are placed equidistantly on said chains. Each of the inkcarrier rolls 135 and 136 is ada ted to alternately contact with the inkistribution roll 73 and the faces of the type-Wheels 59, it being understood that while each of said ink-carrier rolls is passing partway around said ink-distribution roll that said ink-distribution roll is rotated so ra idly as to deposit a large amount of its fi m of ink onto the ink-carrier roll. 135 or the ink-carrier roll 136 as the case may be.
