SANDING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN C. Lonixo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgewood, in the town of Cranston, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanding Devices of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a sanding'device for street cars and has for its object to provide a device which is simple and inexpensive in construction and effective in its operation.
It is found in practice in the operation of the ordinary rail sanding box carried by street cars that the jar of the car packs the sand so closely in the box that it will not run out when desired, even though the sand has been previously kiln dried.
To facilitate and assure the drawing of even closely packed sand from the box, I have provided a rotatable stirring device which may be readily passed. through the closely'packed mass breaking it up and at the same time scraping it towards the valve opening whence it is delivered in the quantities desired to the rails in front of the wheels.
An essential feature of my construction is that the means by which this stirrer is operated is carefully inclosed in a tight casing, whereby the sand is effectually prevented from getting into the mechanism to clog it v up, and interfere with its working. Another feature of this tight casing is that the wearing parts may be kept lubricated so as to insure a quick and easy action of the same.
A stirring device with blades set on an angle is particularly well adapted for this purpose, the same being easy to rotate even in packed sand, as it has a natural tendency to move with a screw-like action the moment pressure is brought to bear upon it.
The invention is fully set forth in this specification and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1-is a side elevation showing a portion of a car in section, with my improved sanding device located on the front platform of the car, the same being adapted to be operated by the foot of the motorman. Fig. 2is an enlarged view of the rotating mechanism showing the same completely inclosed in a protecting casing. Fig. 3is a plan view of the rotatable stirring device. Fig. 4-is a sectional side elevation of the same.

In this receptacle is located my improved stirring device u'hich consists of a casing 23 secured in position through the bracket 4 to the front portion of the car or side of the receptacle. l he'closing cap 5 is threaded into the upper end of the casing and is provided vith an oil hole 6 through nhich the operating mechanism may be lubricated as often as desired. This hole may be closed by means of the screw plug 7. At the lower end of this casing is a contracted shaft inciosiug neck which extends downward nearly to the bottom of the box. litting loosely in the enlargeu portion of this casing is the cylin drical portion 9 in which is formed the heli cal cam groove 10 uhich may extend about one-half way around the same. Threaded through. the side of this casing is the pin 11 the inner end of which engages said cam groove, the same being secured :lirmly in position by the check nut 12. The coil spring 13 extends from the cap to the top of this cylinder to press the same donwward and hold it normally in its don n position.
At 1-1 is the valve or closing plug for the aperture .15 through the bottom of the box. 7 To this valve is connected the stirring device 16 nhich is preferably formed with a plurality of thin blades set on an angle similar in construction to a fan, as illustrated in Fig. 3, but I do not confine myself to this precise construction as stirring arms of any form may be used if desired. This valve and stirrer is connected to the cam cylinder through the upright shaft 17. This mechanism is adapted to be operated by the foot of the motorman through the removable pin 18, pivoted lever 19, and connection .20. An enlarged pipe portion 21 is attached at 22 below the sand box on the underside of the car platform. This pipe is slotted at 23 in one side to admit one end of said pivoted lever 19 and permit its working therein. By this arrangement the sand has no tendency to drop through the slot as the same is on its Way from the valve opening through the pipe 24 to the rails 25.
In the operation of my improved device,
sand or dirt of any quality may be dumped therein and even though the same may pack to a considerable hardness the thin bladed fan-like stirrer will readily cut its way through the mass, breaking the same up and scrape it towards and through the central aperture.
The most essential feature of my improved device is the introduction of the casing to surround the whole to effectually prevent the clogging of the cam. It is obvious that in attempting to operate a device of this character in the sand box with a casing that in a short time, soon as the sand becomes packed it would be impossible to move it; then again, even though the same would move the cam and pin would. soon be cut away by the action of the same as of course no lubricant could be applied to the working parts. By the use of my casing any lubricant may be admitted through the top of the same which will naturally work its way down through all of the working parts and finally be carried out with the sand through the bottom of the box.
The device is very simple and practical of construction and effective in its operation, as by its use any desired amount of sand may be quickly deposited on the rails.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a sanding device, a sand receptacle provided with an outlet through its bottom. portion, a valve for controlling said outlet, a stirrer, an endwise movable shaft connected to said valve and stirrer, and means protected from the sand by which said shaft may be moved to rotate the stirrer to break up the sand, and also open said valve to deliver the sand therethrough.
2. A device of the character described comprising a sand receptacle provided with a bottom outlet, a valve for controlling said outlet, a stirrer, and means including a cam actuated shaft inclosed in a casing within said receptacle whereby said stirrer may be rotated to break up the sand and deliver the same through said outlet.
3. 4. Ina device of the character described comprising a sand receptacle provided with a bottom outlet, a foot actuated valve for controlling said outlet, a stirring device constructed of thin radial blades, each blade being set at an angle to a horizontal plane, an upright shaft to which said stirrer is attached, and cam actuated means for rotating said shaft.
8. In a device of the character described comprising a sand receptacle provided with a bottom outlet, a foot actuated valve for controlling said outlet, a stirring device constructed of thin radial blades, each blade be ing set at an angle to a horizontal plane, an upright shaft to which said stirrer is attached, cam actuated means for rotating said shaft and a casing within said receptacle in which said cam means is inclosed whereby the mechanism is protected from the action of the sand.
9. In a sanding device, a sand receptacle provided with an outlet through its bottom portion, a valve for controlling said outlet, a stirrer, an endwise movable shaft to operate said stirrer to break up the sand, and means protected from the sand whereby the endwise movement of said shaft will cause the same to rotate and also open said valve to deliver the sand therethrough.
