Letters Patent No. 87,940, (lated March 16, 1869.
IIVIPROVEMENT INBRCE FOR BITS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, W.A. IVES, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Bit-Brace; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the same, and which said of the said screw, both the jaws are opened from or closed upon the bit placed between them.
In order to the clear understanding of my invention, I will fully describe the same as illustrated in the ac companying drawings.
A is the socket of a common bit-brace.
B and C, the two jaws, each provided with a tailpiece, D, which extend down into the socket, and secured therein by a pin, a, through the socket, notched into the tail of both the jaws, as seen in figs. 3 and 4. E is a right and left-hand-threaded screw, passing through both jaws, each of the said jaws being threaded to correspond to the thread of the screw, so that, by the turning of the screw in one directionhboth jaws open from each other, and by turning` in the opposite direction, both jaws approach each other.
In order to maintain a central position with the jaws, PI form a bearing, al, in the socket, into which the central portion of the screw rests, so that the two jaws move to or from a central position.
I do' not broadly claim the arrangement of the two jaws, so that they may be compressed together upon the shank of the bit, as such is not new.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The two jaws B and C, pivoted and arranged in a socket, A, and combined with a right and left-handthreaded screw, supported in the bearing d, so as to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
