To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT P. DE REMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houma, parish of Terrebonne, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Stanchions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car stanchions, and the object thereof is to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth a car stanchion, which when occasion so requires can be readily shifted from a horizontal position to a vertical position, and locked in such latter position to perform its function.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a ear stanchion which shall be simple in its construction, readily shiftable from and to operative position, strong, durable, efficient in its use, readily connected to the car, conveniently locked in inoperative position, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is understood vthat changes, variations and. modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
ln describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a car stanchion in accordance with this invention,
showing the same attached to the side of the ear and locked in operative position and further showing in dotted lines the stanchion bar in an inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section view with' the stanchion bar in an upright position but not locked. Fig. 3 is a like view with the stanchion bar locked.l Fig. 4 is a detail of an arresting plate for the stanchion bar, and Fig. 5 is an edge view of said plate.
Referring to the drawings by reference l. characters, 1 denotes the stanclnon b ar wluchqr will prevent the b ar 1. from moving from averl is shown as constructed from a channel iron of the necessary length with the sides 2 of said bar gradually increasing in width from its upper end to a point atone side of the center, 'and then. gradually decreasing in width towards the lower end of the har. The barV 1 is pivotally connected at its lower end through the medium of the bolt 3, to the side 4 of the car and the said bar 1 is of such length as to project the desired distance above the top edge of the side 4 of the car. 5 is provided in the lower portion of the bar 1, through which the bolt 3 projects. The lat- 'ter extends through the side 4 of the car and is retained in position by a nut 5a' mounted upon the inner end of the bolt 3. The bolt 3 at its outer end is formed with a head 6 and upon the bolt 3 and between the head 6 and the bar 1 is mounted a locking member 7 having its lower end formed with an inwardly extending protuberance 8 adapted to engage the bar 1.. The upper end of the locking plate 7 is cut away as at 9 to allow of the operation of the cam portion 10 of the cam lever 11. The portion 10 of the lever 11 is pivotally connected as at 12 between the upper end of the sides 13 of the locking member 7. The nose of the cam portion 1() is adapted to engage the bar 1 when said lever is moved to locking position as shown in Fig. 3, thereby causing the bar 1 to bear against an arresting plate 14 through which the bolt 3 extends and which is interposed between the bar 1 and the side of the car. When the lever 11 is moved to the position shown. in Fig. 3, the free end 15 of the handle thereof is adapted to engage the inclined portion 16 of the locking inember7, causing thereby the protuberance 3 to bear against the bar 1, which action will force the lower portion of the bar 1 against the arresting plate 14, as shown in Fig. 3. When the lever 1.1 is shifted to an inoperative position, that is as shown in Fig. 2, the bar 1 will not snugly engage the plate 14.
The plate 14 is provided with a plurality of openings 17, 1.8 and 19. Through the opening 18 extends the bolt 3 and through the openings 17 and 19 is adapted to extend holdfast devices 20 for securing the plate to the sides 4 of the car. The plate 1.4 at its top is off-set as at 2Oa to form a locking shoulder 21 with which the bar 1 engages when the said bar 1. is in an upright position and locked through. the medium of a lever 1.1.. The shoulder 21 tical to a horizontal position unless the lever 11 is shifted to an inoperative position. The plate 14 is furthermore provided with a pair of outwardly extending wings 22, 23 which are arranged in different planes. The inner An opening edges of the wings 22 and 23 act as stops to member engaging it and the said bar for limit the movement in one direction of the bar 1, that is to say when the bar 1 is moved to an upright position, said edges of the wings 22 and 23 when the bar 1 is moved in such position are engaged by the sides of the bar 1 for limiting the movement of the bar 1 when shifted from a vertical to a horizontal position, as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The Wing 22 also constitutes a support for the bar 1 when it is shifted'ito a horizontal position.
When the bar'l is'shifted to a vertical position and locked through the medium of the lever 11, it is conned between the shoulder 21 and the inner`edges ofthe wings 22 and 23, is maintained in such position by the lever` 11 and cannot be moved out of such position unless the lever is shifted to an inoperative position so that the bar 1 can be moved towards the head 6 of the bolt a suflicient distance to l clear the shoulder 21.
What I claim is 1. Acar stanchion comprising abar pivoted at its lower end to the side of a car and capable of being shifted from a horizontal to a vertical position, an arresting plate interposed between the bar and the side of the car and mounted upon the pivotal connection between the bar and the car, said plate provided with means for limiting the movement of the' bar in either direction and further having a shoulder for maintaining the bar in a vertical position, a locking member bearing against the bar, and a locking lever carried by said member, bearing against it and the said bar for maintaining the latter in close contact with said plate.
2. A car stanchion comprising an arresting plate provided with a pair of wings and a vertically extending shoulder, a pivoted bar arranged against the outer face .of said plate and adapted to be maintained in a vertical position by said shoulders and wings and further having its movement limited in either direction by said wings, a lockin member, and a locking lever carried by sai maintaining the latter in close contact with said plate.
3. A car stanchion comprising an arresting plate provided with a pair of wings and a vertically extending shoulder, a pivoted bar arranged against the outer face of said plate and adapted to be maintained in a vertical position by said shoulder and said Wings and further having its movement ylimited in either direction by said Wings, and a lever and a locking member bearing against the lower portion of the bar for keeping it in close contact with said plate.
4. A car stanchion comprising an arresting plate, a shiftable bar, a pivot for the bar,
a locking plate mounted upon the pivot and engaging the lower portion of the bar for maintaining it inits shifted position, and a lever' carried by said locking member and adapted to engage the plate and the bar for maintaining the bar in close contact with the late.

A car stanchion comprising a fixed plate provided with a shoulder and a pair of wings, a pivot extended through said plate, a locking member mounted upon the pivot, a bar mounted upon said pivot and interposed between the locking member and the plate, and a cam lever carried by the locking member and adapted when shifted to locking position to maintain said bar in close contact with said plate.l
6. A car stanchion comprising an arresting plate having a shoulder and a plurality of wings, al shiftable bar, a pivot for the bar, a locking member on the pivot7 and a cam lever engagingl the bar and adapted in connection with said member and shoulder to maintain the bar in a shifted position.
