Description
B. OLIVER AND M. L. OLIVER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters .Patent No. 87,871, dated Ma/rch 16,1869. I
IMPROVED STUMP-EXTRAC'I'OR.
v Tha Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the I lma.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, B. OLIVER and M. L. OLIVER, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Stone and Stump-Lifter; and we do. hereby declare that the 'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for raising heavy stones for loading, pulling stumps, and for other like purposes, and has for its object to provide an arrangement whereby great power may be applied by hand, in a convenient manner, and the weight may be readily lowered, after having been raised, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
Figure l represents a side elevation, partly broken away, and
Figure 2 represents a plan view of our improved apparatur.. v
' Similar letters of reference' indicate colresponding parts.
A represents a framing, for supporting the operating-mechanism, and designed to be made sufficiently light to be carried from place to place by hand.
B representsa shaft, arranged in suitable bearings ou the top, carrying a chain-wheel, C, and ratchetwheels, D, one on each end.
The said chain-Wheel is provided with recesses in its periphery, united t0 the links of the chain, for holding it, no matter how great the weight on the latter may be.
The said ratchet-wheels are' each provided with levers, F, taking into grooves in the wheels, forfulcra, and provided with lifting-pawls, G, acting on the said wheels, to rotate them.
The said levers F are connected, at their long arms, by links or other suitable means, to the short arms of levers I, pivoted at K to the framing, and terminating, at the ends of their long arms, in handles, suitable for vibrating them by hand.
One or both ofthe ratchet-wheels may be provided with holding-pawls L.
The fixed end of the chain may be wound as many times as may be desired, around a shaft, M, at the top of the framing, to produce friction, and carried down to or near'to the bottom of the framing, wherearope, N, is connected to it, and passed through an eye-bolt, O, to any suitable place for'making lit fast to the framing. v
This arrangement is intended to facilitate the lower- -ing of the weight after it has been raised for loading it, and itis accomplished by loosening the said rope, and deliveringit through the eye, and thechain over the shaft M, in a manner to regulate the delivery, by the friction of the chain and rope on the shaft and eye, as will be readily understood.
To add to the power of the machine, as 'above described, a pulley is suspended in the bight of the chain E, from which the-hooks for connection to the weight are cdnuected.-
When light weights are tobe raised, the pulley may be removed, and the position ofthe chain reversed on the chain-wheel, so as to suspend the hooked end Q, to take the weight.
After the weight has been delivered from the chain, the pawls may be raised out of connection with the ratchet-wheels, and the chain returned to the right position for attaching to the Weight.
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I. The shaft B, provided with the chain-wheel O, ratchet-wheels D, and arranged upon the framing A, combined with the pawl-levers F and levers I, all arranged as and for the purpose specitied.
2. The combination, with the chain-wheel and operating-apparatus, of the chain, friction-shaft'M, and eye-bolts, when arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification ofour invention signed by us, this- 8th day of December, 1868.
B. OLIVER. M. L. OLIVER.

'FRANK BLooKLEY,
ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
