ADVERTISING STREET-CAR SIGN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1908.
Application filed March 5. 1907- Serial No. 360.719.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPHONSE KING, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of San Antonio, in the county of BeXar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Street-Oar Signs, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to devices for advertising which are particularly adapted for use uponstreet cars.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby advertising signs may be conveniently located upon the roofs of cars and so constructed, that while securely maintained in position, the signs may be readily changed, new signs being substituted for old ones as desired, and without the necessity of using tools in effecting the change.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents in perspective, a street car of the type adapted for interurban use as well as for use in a city, to which car the improved advertising sign is applied; Fig. 2 represents in elevation a portion of the frame for supporting the interchangeable signs; Fig. 3 represents a vertical transverse section through this frame taken in the plane indicated by the' line XX, Fig. 2, and showing in addition thereto illuminating means mounted on the car roof; Fig. 4 is a detail showing one of the lugs, by which the interchangeable sign is supported; Figs. 5 and 6 represent in front and end elevation respectively one of the spring clips which receive the lugs on the sign; Fig. 7 represents in front and side elevation, one of the spring catches by which the sign frame is secured to the car and Fig. 8 is a front and side elevation of a socket plate secured to the side of the car to receive said catch. I
The advertising signs preferably consist of frames or plates 9, upon which the advertisement may be presented in any desired man- 11. These clips may be supported by any suitable means for the reception of the lugs pose, consist of a frame or frames 12, to
which, at suitable intervals, are attached the catches 13 on the spring portion of which is formed a stud 14. To the sides of the car at its upper edge are secured the socket plates 15, in which are openings 16 for the reception of the studs 14 when the catches 13 are inserted in the sockets. The catches 13 are preferably bent backward and upward from a point above the sockets, whereby to carry the signs back nearly into the plane of the sides of the car, whereby also to gain, at the offset formed by said bends, somewhat of a support upon thecar roof.
The signs 9 may be and are preferably formed of translucent material and the frames 12 supporting them are open through the middle in order that the signs may be illuminated, as by mounting on the car roof behind them incandescent or other lights as indicated at 17. These lights may be protected by means of a shield 18 preferably attached to the frame 12 and the said shields may likewise serve as reflectors for directing the light through the signs. The signs may also extend partly across the front of the car as indicated in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that the frames 12 may be readily attached to and removed from the car by manipulation of the spring portion of the catches 13. It will also be seen that the signs 9 may be readily applied to said frames by pressing the lugs 10 in the spring clips 11 and may be as readily removed, the angular formation of the clips and lugs serving to hold the signs firmly against rattling when in place.
The invention claimed is y v 1. The combination with a street car, ,of socket plates secured to the sides thereof and an advertising sign device provided with spring catches, wherebyit may be supported in said sockets.
2. The combination with an advertising plate Having polygonal lugs upon its corners, of angular spring clips mounted upon a suitable support to receive said lugs.
3. The combination with an advertising sign support, of spring catches secured I In testimony whereof I have signed my thereto and projecting downwardly therename to this specification in the presence of from, said catches having studs upon the 1 two subscribing witnesses.
