Description

JOEL VMILLER, OF SWEDESBOROUGH, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 87,863, dated March 16, 1869.
IMIPRQVED RIYETLTOOL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, JOEL MILLER, of Swedesborough, in the county of Gloucester, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rivet-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingv drawings forming part of this specification. This` invention relates to improvements in apparatus for heading rivets by hand, and consists of a riveting-die, provided with a handle-shank and discharger, aswill be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved apparatus, partly in section, and
Figure 2 represents a plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts..
' A represents a solid die, made of one piece of metal, with the usual central bore for theshank of the rivet, and provided with a shank, B, by which it is -supported in a. handle, O,- and also in a socket in anvil or other suitable bench.
rlhe blanks to be headed are put into the socket of the die, resting on the bottom of the same, or, for
greater convenience in discharging them, after being headed, on the end of a discharger, resting in the bottom of the die, and having a stem, E, of less diameter than the bore of the said die, projecting through a small hole coincident with the axis of the bore of the die, in the shank B.
The shank of the dieis then placed in the socket in the anvil, or other holder-,and the head formed by a hand-hammer.
Washers may be employed to vary the height of the discharger in the die, as it may be required for rivets of various lengths. l
To discharge theI headed rivet, the die may be raised out of its support, and a light blow given to the end of the stem E.
Having thus described 'my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved tool, herein described, consisting of the die A, handle O, and discharger D, all constructed andv arranged as and for the purpose specified.
