EMMET HORTON, o'F ELMIRA, NEW YORK, QASSIGNO-R TO HORTON BASKET MACHINE I .OOMPANY or wnsr VIRGINIA.
BASKET-MACHINE.
vBe it known that I, EMMET 'HORTON, a citizen of .the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung' and State of New York, have Invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basket-Makin Machines,
the following is a spec' cation. My invention relates particularly to ma- I chines for making baskets of wood veneer in which sheets of veneer are bent, and secured b means of bands which encircle the upper edges of the bent sheets.
The primary object of my present invention is to produce a machine for making baskets of this class by automatic mechanism so organized and arranged asto cut the blanks for the basket from sheets of veneer, feed them forward to blank bending devices, which bend them int'o'f orm and whichcooperate with band-applying mechanism that binds the upper edges of the blanks and completes the basket.
In carr ing out my invention in the way now best lznown to me, I- provide mechanism for feeding long strips or sheets of veneer to a cutter which severs the sheets into blanks of 5 suitable size and shape to form the basket. Theshaped blanks pass from'the cutter to transferring devices whichcarry them to mechanism that bends and'forms the blanks into final shape. I I
The transferring devices are so constructed v and operated asto arrange two blanks cross- Wise or at right angles to each other between a form and a former before the latter are brought into operation. The blank-bending mechanism comprises a series of sets of forms plied the former recedes from the form and and formers mounted-t0 move bodily about a common axis, while each form atthe same time has an independent rotary' movement about its own axis. When a pair of blanks is fed to a set of bending devices the form and former are separated, but immediately thereafter the former rises and presses the blanks around the form. After the bands have been .ap-
an expeller is operated which ejects the com blanks before the pleted basket. I
1 The band-feeding and'applying devices at the proper time applya band to the form before the blanks have been bent and also another band about the upper edges ofthe completed basket is expelled or a single band may be used which is first applied around the form before the ve- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 15' 1898- Srial N0. 691L030 neer blanks are bent and then wrapped around the veneer blanks after they are bent. Any suitable nailing devices may 1 be employed to secure the bands in place. The
mechanism is all driven from a common power shaft, and all the operations are continuous, it being necessary only for an attendant to feed sheets of veneer to the blank feeding table and to supply a-- bundle of bands from time to time to the band receptacle.
While I have stated the primary object of my invention to be tomake baskets b ,automatic mechanism, my claims are not imited to mechanism wholly automatic. Some parts of the mechanism may be used without the others, and in machines diflering from that in which I have shown them embodied.
Thus," the mechanism for feeding the blanks may be used independently of the particular mechanism shown for forming the baskets,
' -.PatentedJ'an.28, 1908.
and the mechanism forforming the baskets and for applying thebands may be used with other forms of feeding mechanism. The details of construction inthe feeding, forming, and band-applying mechanism may be considerably varied, the machine shown and de-- scribed being simply one way of embodying my improvements.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a basket-making'machine embodying my improvements,
portions of the mechanism being shown in vertical section, and some of theparts being broken away themore clearly to illustrate other parts; Fig. 2 represents a plan of the machine, some of the parts being shown In section; Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of the machine looking from the front end thereof backwards, some .of the mechanism being omitted as this figure is mainly designed to re resent the cutter andthe mechanism whic operates it; Fig. 4 1s a deta1l view in longitudinal vertical section designed to illustrate particularly the mechanism for feeding and cutting the blanks and for transferring them from the feed table to the bending mechanism; Fig. 5 is a detail View In perspective designed to illustrate partlcularly the construction of the delivery end of the feed table andthe devices for transferring the blanks from the feed table to the bending mechanism; Fig. 6 is a View in perspectlve and on an enlarged scale, showing particularly. the construction and illustratmgthe operation of the band-feeding mechanism;

The upper end of the bore of the shank, 10, is flared a little, adaptfiig it readily to receive a plun er .rod, 47, depending from a horizontal lever, 47, secured to a rod, 47, pivoted in standards, 47, rising from the column, 9, or rather from the cam and gear wheel, 37. Between its pivots and the plunger/Prod, 47, the lever, 47, is pivotally connectedwith the upper end of the rod, 46,
which extends vertically and centrally being guided near its upper .end in a guide block, 46, and at its lower end in a guide, 46*, on the bed plate. The lower end of this shaft is provided with a vertical series of teeth, 46, which mesh with a pinion, 45, on a horizontal shaft, 45, just plate and mounted at one endin a bearing, 45', on the bed plate, and at its opposite end in'bearings in the column, 9. The shaft extends through the column and at its outer end carries a bevel pinion, 44, meshing with a segment of' teeth, 44*, on the shaft, 23. The arrangement is such that when the shaft, 23, is oscillated, it operates the shaft, 45, and rod, 46, and consequently the lever, 47, which gives movement to the plunger, 47, that actuates the ejectors and certain other mechanism hereinafter described. Each shank, 10, has rigidly secured to it at its upper end a pinion, 39, and a Each pinion carries an unbroken series of teeth and each plate, 40, is of ,a general rectangular form but'its four sides are'slightly curved, as indicated, to fit the guide-ways,- w on cam" and gearwlieel, 37.
When the frame, C, is revolved the pinions at times engage with the teeth, w and'w' on the wheel, 37, and when so engaged are rotated. The plates, 40, also rotate at this time, being plermitted so to do by recesses, 40, cut in t over the {teeth, but when'the pinions are out of gear with the teeth, w and 'w, the plates fit the ide-ways, w, on the wheel,

tails of construction of the clutch mechanism are unimportant. Any suitable devices for this purpose may be, employed. The operation of the mechanism, has al.-
ready been indicated, but briefly stated it is as follows: The band res e voir, R, is provided' with a supply of bands sufficient in number to make-a certain number of baskets, and the feed table is fed with'sheets of veneer. The cam and gear wheel, 8, is revolved in the '20 direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1,
and the feeding mech'anismfeeds forward the sheets of. veneer under the cutter, 3, which forms the blanks, X and Y. i I
-The mechanism for actuating the cutter and feeding the-veneer is such that the feed of the veneer stops while the cutter is openating and after the cutter has o erated the feed is resumed. Onev blank, to form one-half of the basket is received on the transferrer, 24, while a blank to formftheother ortion thereof is received on theplates, 28. I lhe blank, 'X, is turned into positlon by the transferrer, 24; While the blank, Y, is not turned. but 7 is fed straight forward, both 35, blanks being moved'into osition vbetween the form and former, as in 'cated in Fig 1. When in this position the transferringdevices rest and the rod, 14, is lifted, causing .the'former, 1-1 ,"to rise and press the blanks, 40' X and. Y, around the form, 10, which has previously had aband, Z, wrapped around it, as will be hereinafter explained. NVhile each set of forms and formers is'receiving a set of blanks the frame, C, is stationary! After a set of blanks has been received and bent around a form, the frame, C, is revolved, and while thus revolving'the forms, 10, are revolved about "their own axes, or about the bdsbes, 10 for the purpose'of applyingjthe outside .barld, Z, to the basket, It should here'be stated-thateach form, 10, before it receives a pair of blanls'X and Y, has a band, Z, Wrapped about it,', which constitutes the inner-band of the basket, and then the blanks 5,) X and Y, are bent around this band, and after'bin sobent thesecond or outside band is appli d, or the same'band bent asecond time aroundthe form outside the bent blanks, X and Y. v It will be observed that the reservoir of the bands, Z, is located just opposite the first mm D in theseries of arms. In the present instance I have: shown six forms and formers.
9. These forms may be said to take six different positions; These positions I have numbered No. 1, No. 2, &c. When a form is in position No; 1 it receives a band, Z, and when it moves from position No. 1, the 'pinion, 39, engages with the. long series of teeth, w and the band is wra ped around the form, the'form'being given t firee-fourths of a rev olution when passing from position No. 1 to, position'No. 2. When the form arrives'at position No. 2 it receives the blanks, X and blanks bent around it by the corresponding former. This operation will also bend the blanks'aroundthe band which was applied to the form in position No. 1. 'Whenpassing from position No. 2to'= position No, 3, onefourth of a revolution is given to the form and the firstpart of the nailing is done at l position No.3. After that one-fourth of a revolution is given to the form when passing from position No. 3 to position No. 4, and
nailingis'done at ositionNo. 4. This op'- 1 eration is repeated until the forin reaches position No. 6 where the last nailing is done; it will be observed that in passing from position No. 1 to position No. 6 the form has been revolved twiceythe band was first wrapped around the form once before the blanks X and Y were bent around it, and by means of the teeth, w, between the positions 2 and 3, 3 and i, &c., another revolution is. given to the form which wraps the band around the outside .of the bla'nks,'X and Y, the band being nailed as fast as itf is applied 1 in this way.- .Assoon as position No. His '100 reached, the former'drops, and then the form proceeds to position No. 1, where the comple'ted basket is ejected, and then the form is ready to receivea new band for a new basket.
.The mechanism: is so'constructed and op-L erated that the several movements take place at the proper times and in the proper order to erform the several 0 erations successivey and, without, 'inter erence'. I have shown six forms and corresponding formers, but any desired number may be employed, the I gearing mechanism being properly changed to change the times of the move- I ment's'of the different parts, to bringth'e mechanism into operation in the proper order. 1 15 I do -not herein claim broad a. screw-for feeding the bands or other parts of the basket, as this subject-matter is claimed broadly in my a plication No. 640,537, filed June 12, 1897. 'n that application the screw-blade is arranged vertically and the bands are. given a quarter turn in being fed, while in this application the bands are not, turned over w ile being fed to theform.
