Be it known that .1, JOHN KOLLANDER, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Chil cago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Stretchers, of which 3 the' following is a s ecification.

My invention re ates to curtain. stretchers and particularly to that class thereof charac terized by a rectangular framev formed of longitudinal and transverse bars adjust-ably secured together, and each rovided with a plurality of pins for attaching the curtains thereto. Usually, with curtain stretchers of this class, it is more or less difiicult, in adjusting the members, to get them securely fixed at right angles to each other, although this is important in as much as the proper hanging of the curtains is, to a'great degree, depend.- ent thereon.

The object of my invention is to provide a curtain stretcher of the class mentioned, in which the transverse and longitudinal members will be maintained at right angles to each other when the device is set up for use.

A further object is to provide a curtain stretcher which may be readily and quickly adjusted to accommodate any size of curtain.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a rectangular frame formed of a pair of longitudinal members and a pair of transverse members, each provided with a plurality of pins for attaching the curtains thereto, a two part clamp arranged at each corner of said .irame for uniting the longitudinal and transverse members, one part of each said clamp being slidably mounted upon a transverse member and the other upon the longitudinal member and means for maintaining said parts and their respective members at right angles to each. other. My

invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,

Referring to the drawings, 11 indicate the longitudinal members and 22 the transverse members. These are preferably formed of wood and are each provided with a plurality of pins, 3 for attaching the curtains l by the intersection of the longitudinal and transverse members are each provided with a clamp, A. The clamp A is formed of two ,parts B and C, the former being slidably mounted upon the transverse members, 2 and the latter upon the longitudinal member, 1. The member, B comprises a plate, 5, adapted to rest upon the top of the member, 2, a flange, 6, depending into a slot, or groove, 7, formed in the top of said member and a pair of depending arms, 8 terminating at their lower ends in the hooked portion, 9. l The member, B, is thus free to slide on the transverse member, 2, but all lateral or tor sional movement between the members B- and 2 is prevented by the longitudinal rib 2, which fits snugly between the flange, 6 and the depending portions, 8.

The member, C comprises a plate, 10, substantially of the same width as the longitudinal member, 1, and the side flanges 11, which fits snugly against the sides of the member, 1. T he member, 1 is freely slidable through the member, Q, but is prevented from lateral movement therein by the flanges, 11. Upon the sides of the flanges, 11 are pins or gudgeons, 12. These extend outwardly from said flanges and are adapted to be engaged by the hooks, 9, of the member, B. 13 indicates a clampingscrew threaded into the bottom of a recess, 14 formed in the bottom plate, 10, of the member, (I. The screw, 13 is provided Witha swiveled end, 15, which impinges against the bottom of the member, 1, clamping the members, B and (3 upon the members, 2 and 1, and binding the latter together. Inasmuch as the flanges, 11, and the flange, 6 are at right angles to ment with the gudgeons, 12., it is obvious that the transverse and longitudinal members of the frame will be maintained at right angles to each other when the stretcher is set up for use.

To adjust the stretcher the screw, 13 is loosened after which the members, 1 and 2 may he slid one upon the other until the frame is of the required size, after which the screw, 13 is tightened. To dismember the frame, the screw, 13 is retracted until the swiveled end, 15, rests within the recess, 14, after which the plate, 10, may be raised sufficiently to disengage thegudgeons, 12 from the books, 9.

In a curtain stretcher a longitudinal member and a transverse member each pro vided with a plurality of pins in combination with a separable two part clamp connecting said members, one part of said clamp being slidably' mounted upon the transverse member and v the other upon the longitudinal member and means for clamping them upon their respective members, the parts of said clamp being readily detachable without removing them from their respective members, substantially as described.

2. In a curtain stretcher a transversemember and a longitudinal member, each provided with a plurality of pins, a two-part clamp connecting said members, one part thereof being slidably mounted upon said provided with a plurality 'of pins, a two part clamp connecting said members, one part arms terminating in hooks at their lower ends transverse member and .having depending arms, and v the other 'part being slidably mounted on the longitudinal member 'and'coactilig means upon said arms and the last said part for detachably connecting the parts of the clamp, substantially asdescri'bed.

' 3. In a curtain stretcher a transverse member and a longitudinal member, each thereof being slidably mounted upon said transverse member and having depending and the other part being slidably mounted 'upon the longitudinal member and having gudgeons adapted to engage said hooks, sub stantially as escribed.

4. In a curtain stretcher a longitudinal member and a transverse member each provided with a plurality of pins, in combination with a two part clamp connecting said members, one part thereof being slidably mounted upon said transverse member and com rising a plate portion adapted to rest upon t e top of said member and having a depending flange, said member being grooved to. receive sa d flange and a pair of arms dependmg from said plate and terminating in hooks at their lower ends, the other part of said clamp being slidably mounted upon said longitudinal member and comprising a bottom plate portion having side flanges adapted to fit snugly against the sides of said member and gudgeons on said flanges adapted to be engaged .by said hooks and a clamping screw arranged JOHN KOLLANDER.
