Be it known that 1, Mirror; F. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented as certain new 5 and ueetul Inmrovement in Shredding-Machines, or? which the following is afnll, clear, end exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the cart to which it appertion of the grinding surface.-
i This invention relates to shredding machines, and perticularly to machines for shredding or grinding u gummy fibrous niateriol such, for exam e, as guayele. The machines which have cretofore been in-use for grinding up material of this character have not proved entirely satisfactory due to the fact that soon after the machine had been in use a portion of the grindin surface became clogged with the matcria being operated on. Furthermore, said machines were so constructed that they could not be used during the time the grinding surface was be ing cleaned, and accordingly, a deal of time was wasted.
One object of my invention is to provide a machine particularly adapted for shredding guayelc and which is so constructed that no 40 particular portion of the grinding surface will become clo god sooner than other portions of said grinding surface' Another object of my invention is to provide a machine of the character described having arcrnovablc grinding surface so that when. one grinding surface becomes clogged another can be substituted therefor and thus 5 enable the rnachine to be. used continuously. This closed chamber is located adjacent thc rear side of the opening through which the material is introduced into the machine so that in case there should be any tendency for the dust which rises from the metcria-l to pass out of the receiving opening, the suction in said closed chamber will drew the dust into same and thus revent the dust from escaping through t c receiving opening. Referring to the drawings which represent the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates the casing of the machine which ispreforably formed in two sections, a lower section A and an upper section B provided with a member 2 whichcan be hooked onto a lifting device and thus bodily remove the upper section from the lower section. Connected .to the side walls of each section of the casing are semi-circular plates '3 which constitute a ring when both sections of the casing are in position and act as asupport for the grinding surface. The grinding surface, which is cylindrical and surrounds a winged heater 4, is preferably formed of sheet metal having slots 5 formed therein, and this grinding surface is also formed in two'sections C and D which are riveted to frames formed by transversely extending bars 6 niortised into pieces 7 of The lower section C of the grinding surface is retained in o erative position by means of clamps 8'whicfi engage the outer edges of the sem1-ring shaped pieces 7 and thus hold the grinding surface securely seated on the circular shaped plates 3 connected'to the side walls of the casing, and these clamps are provided with laterally extending pins 9 W ich project throu h elongated slots 10 formed in the side wal s of the' casing. Each of the pins 9 is provided with an interiorly screw-threaded head 1 1 through which a screw-threaded actuating shaft 12 extends, 'said shafts being journaled in lugs 13 on the casing, and rovided at their outer ends with sprocket wllcels 14 which receive sprocket chains 15. As herein shown, four screw-threaded shafts are provided for each clamp, and theends of the upper shafts are squared to receive a wrench or other suitable actuating device. A feed opening 16 is formed in the npper section of the casing, and the upper section of the grinding surface is held in position by a clamp 17 which is constructed and operated similarly to the clamps which hold the lower section of the g inding surface in position except, however, t at only the finishe been thrown out through the slots in the grinding surface, this suction preferably bethe casing, as shown in Fig. 2.

A grinding surface comprising a casing having a feed opening, a rotary heater and a grinding surface arranged inside of said casing, one end of said grinding surface t'erminating at the rear side of the feed opening, a closed chamber located at the rear slde'of the feed opening and having its bottom-formed by a portion of the grinding surface, and. a conduit leading from said chambefto a point adjacent the eye of the machine; substantially as described.

In a machine of the class described, a casing, a grinding surface, stationary abutments carried by the side walls of the casing with which said grinding surface contacts, and adjustable clamps for holding said grindmg surface in intimate engagement with said abutments; substantially as described.
