Description

No. 877,625. I 4 PATENTED JAN. 28, 1908.
I L. P. ADT.
NOSE GUARD FOR EYEGLASSES.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 6, 1905.

LEO F. ADT, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
NOSE-GUARD FOR EYE GLASSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to improvements in nose-guards for eyeglasses, and the object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in nose guards particularly of that kind employing a main supporting pad and a supplemental pad for steadying the eyeglasses to prevent tilting while they are supported by the main supporting pads, whereby the guards may be cheaply manufactured and readily applied to the mountings and adjusted or otherwise adapted to the wearers' nose, and which in use will occupy such a position on the nose as to afford ample security and firmness without unduly pinching the wearers nose.
To these and other ends my invention con sists in certain improvements and combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a mounting with the lenses attached showing nose guards embodying my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the mounting and guard, portions being omitted; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View on the line 33 of Fig. 1 looking toward the right, showing the positions the main and supplemental portions usually occupy relatively to the nose.
My present improvements are shown in the present embodiment as applied to an ordinary mounting comprising the bridge spring 1 attached at its ends to the lensattaching devices 2 and 3, the latter in turn being secured to the lenses, 4 and 5 respec tively. These attaching devices may be of any desired form and are provided at their inner ends with a substantially vertically extending seat 6 for the reception of the ends of the bridge 1 and also the attaching portions of the guards. In their present form these guards are composed of a single piece of preferably flat material, an intermediate portion 7 of which is formed to enter the seat 6 of the attaching device and is per-. forated to receive the fastening screw 8, and to this intermediate attaching portion the arm 9 extends in a direction downwardly and rearwardly to form the main supporting portion of the nose guard which is adapted to bear flatwise against the side of the wearers nose. Extending in an opposite direction from the intermediate attaching portion of the guard and forming a continuation of the arm 9 is a shank '10 which is formed by an edgewise bend of the material of the guard, the said shank extending upwardly from the intermediate attaching portion and bending rearwardly and downwardly, and to the free end of this shank is attached the auxiliary or supplemental nose-bearing portion which is formed by doubling the shank upwardly and preferably providing the free end of the doubled portion with an enlarged nose-bearing portion 11, and this supplemental noseengaging portion 11 usually occupies a position in rear of and substantially on the same level as the intermediate attaching portion of the guard.
The guard described is made up of substantially a continuous strip of material an intermediate portion of which forms the attaching portion for the guard and the lower and upper extensions thereof comprise the 1 main and supplemental nose engaging portions thereof, and it may obviously be formed of a straight strip of material by simply bending it edgewise and flatwise for the respective nose-engaging portions, or it may be punched at a single operation from sheet material, and in case the particular form of supplemental pad 11 is employed the free end of the shank 10 is doubled flatwise, and in each case there are no sharp angles or corners which are liable to cause breakage. Of course a supplemental nose-engaging pad of any desired form may be employed some forms of which would further simplify and cheapen the cost of making the guard, but I prefer to employ a form substantially as that shown, for the rearwardly and downwardly extending shank 10 is of sufficient length to enable the supplemental pad to be adjusted bodily inwardly and outwardly i. e. planes parallel with that of the optical axes of the lenses without disturbing the relation of the nose engaging surface of the auxiliary pad to the side of the wearers nose, and in employing the looped or double portion for conauxiliary pads and the shanks, the distance of the supplemental pads in rear of the lenses may be readily adjusted by bending'the pad 11 edgewise and thereby twisting the bend in the doubled portion and a yielding pressure is produced upon the wearers nose.
When the eyeglasses occupy a proper position on the nose of the wearer, the arm 9 of the guard which extends obliquely relatively to the plane of the lenses will occupy a position approximately at right angles to the front of the nose to sustain the weight of the eyeglasses and to prevent the lateral swinging of the eyeglasses, and the auxiliary or supplemental pads will engage upon opposite sides of the nose at points above the portions 9 and offset from the line of the lower portions 9 of the guard and thereby steady the eyeglasses and prevent their tilting about the lower arms 9, and by arranging the main and supplemental portions of the guards in the manner described, ample security and rigidity is obtained without unduly pinching the wearers nose.
I claim as my invention: 1. In eyeglasses, the combination with the lenses, the bridge connecting them and the attaching devices for the bridge and guards, of nose guards each embodying an intermediate attaching portion, a nose-engaging por tion extending downwardly from the lower end of the attaching portion and arranged obliquely rearwardly in relation to the plane of the lenses, and a shank doubled upon itself and extending rearwardly from the upper end of the attaching portion and provided with a supplemental nose-engaging portion.
2. In eyeglasses, the combination with the lenses, the bridge connecting them and the attaching devices for the bridge and guards,
.of nose guards each embodying a verticallyextending attaching portion, a downwardlyextending arm arranged in rear and obliquely to the plane of the lenses and adapted to engage the wearers nose, and a shank extending from the upper end of the verticallyarranged attaching portion having an up wardly opening loop and a supplemental nose-engaging portion on the shank beyond the loop and offset from the said arm.
3. In eyeglasses, the combination with the lenses, the bridge connecting them, and the attaching devices for the bridge and guards,
