Specification of Letters Patent.
N ra/mole.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Application filed August 17. 1907. Serial No. 388.976.
' of the switch,,even though the switc operating mechanism should break or otherwise get out of order.
A further object is, to provide a switch locking mechanism which shall be arranged and operated separately from the switch, and the switch operating mechanism.
A further object is toprovide a switch lock as mentioned, which shall beoi' low cost to manufacture and which may be readily a plied to any switch now in use, without ma mg any alterations in said switch or its oper ati-ng mechanism.
Further objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in the novel switch lock illustrated in the accom anying drawingsand fully described and c aimed hereinafter.
My invention will he more readily understood by reference, to the accompanying drawings. forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1, is a plan view of a switch equipped with a switch lock embodying my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2, is a cross sectional view on the line m-m, of Fig. i, looking in the direction of the arrows, the switch being shown closed, and, Fig. 3, is a similar view illustrating the switch in open position.
.Referrin to the drawings, 1] indicate the through rails, and 2.2, the siding rails; 3 indicates the through. switch, rail and 4,
the siding switch rail; the switch rails 3 and 4, are connected by the usual rods, 5, and are operated by any usual switch operating mechanism as 6. It is between the points of the rails, 3 and 4, that I locate my switch locking device, which is operated independently of the switch and the switch operating mecham'sm and may be constructed so as to lock either or both of the switch points in place.
In the drawings, 1 have illustrated a device which is adapted to lock the rail 3, in position when the switch is closed and the main track open, and which may be thrown to lock the rail, 4, when the switch is open and the main track closed; however, the latter may be dispensed with as it is most essential to lock the switch in closed position in order that the llanges on the wheels of a fast through train shall not open or split the switch.
Again referring to the drawings 7, indicates a metal block or plate spiked to the tie between the points of the switch; to the late, 7, are secured the rods, or Mills, 8, raving slccvcs or bearings 9, at their ends for thc'pair of rods 10; The rods 10, move freely in the sleeves 9, towards and from the switch points and the ends of the rods'are forked as at 11, to engage the flange of the switch rail; the device is operated by a handle or lcvcr lB, which is pivoted as at 13, to the block 7'; the lover I), is connected to the rods 10, by a rod 14, pivotally connected passing through, or otherwise suitably connected to the lover; it is evident that instead locking device from the switch tower in the same manner as the switch is operated.
The operation of the device is as follows: The switch is first closed in the ordinary manner after which'thc lever, 12, is thrown into the position shown in Fig. 2; this causes the rods 10, to slide longitudinally in the bearings 9, until their ends impinge against the point of the switch rail, 3. i/Vhcn it is desired to open the switch the lever 12, is first thrown in the op ositc direction, withdrawing the rods 10, rom contact with the switch, after which the switch may be opened in the usual manner.
I claimv as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.. In a device of the class described, main rails, siding and switch rails, in combination with means for operating said switch rails and a switch locking device arranged between the points of said switch rails, said locking device comprising a rod,
Having thus described my invention, what to sockets 15,-securcd to the rods 10,- and of the hand lcvcr 12, I may operate the mounted for longitudinal movement, transbearings for longitudinal movement transversely of the track, a lever mounted on said block and suitable connections between said 15 red and said lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my I name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. I
JOHN THOMAS TULLOCK.

verrely of the track, to impinge against said switch rail and means for operating said rod, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, main rails, siding and switch rails, in combination with means for operating said switch rails and a switch lockingdevice arranged between the points of said switch rails, said locking device comprising a metal plate secured to the tie between the points of said rails, suitable bearings carried by said plate, a pair of rods mounted in said
